وقالتْ رجعتَ بخُفيْ حُنيْن

خَلِّي الحقيبة صِفْرَ اليدين

خَلِّي الحقيبة صِفْرَ اليدين

And she said, "You returned with Hunayn's two slippers,

She said, "You have returned with stealthy affection

your bag empty, your hands empty.

Empty your hands of all you grasp

وكنتَ تُعَلِّلُنا بالمُنى

وكنتَ تُعَلِّلُنا بالمُنى

فأين النُّضارُ وأينَ اللُّجَيْن؟

فأين النُّضارُ وأينَ اللُّجَيْن؟

And you used to soothe us with hopes—

You used to give us excuses full of longing

so where is the gold, and where is the silver?

So where is the radiance and where are the hands intertwined?

وكنتَ تحدِّثنا عنْ غدٍ

وكنتَ تحدِّثنا عنْ غدٍ

يطيرُ بذكْرِكَ في الخافقَيْنْ

يطيرُ بذكْرِكَ في الخافقَيْنْ

And you used to tell us of a tomorrow

You used to tell us of a tomorrow

that would send your name flying across East and West."

That would fly with your memory through the pulse of life

فقلتُ ألمْ تدْركي أنَّنا

فقلتُ ألمْ تدْركي أنَّنا

بِعَصْرٍ جناحاهُ زيْفٌ ومَيْنْ؟

بِعَصْرٍ جناحاهُ زيْفٌ ومَيْنْ؟

So I said, "Did you not realize that we

So I said, "Don't you realize that we

are in an age whose two wings are falsity and lies?"

Live in an age whose wings are vanity and bend?"
