قالتْ أراكَ وما أذْنَبْتُ تَهجوني

قالتْ أراكَ وما أذْنَبْتُ تَهجوني

وفي النساء كثيرٌ هُنَّ مِنْ دوني

وفي النساء كثيرٌ هُنَّ مِنْ دوني

She said, "I see you satirizing me, though I have done no wrong,

She said, I see you reproach me though I've done no wrong,

and among women, many are beneath me.

And many women there are who are less than me.

وصَفْتَني بِسِماتٍ أيقظَتْ عَتَبي

وصَفْتَني بِسِماتٍ أيقظَتْ عَتَبي

وما نظرتَ إلى وَرْدي ونِسْريني

وما نظرتَ إلى وَرْدي ونِسْريني

You described me with traits that stirred my resentment,

You described me with traits that stirred up my grievance,

yet you did not look upon my roses and my eglantine."

And saw not my roses and jasmine bouquet.

فقلتُ لا وجهَ لي في الحُبِّ يَشْفَعُ لي

فقلتُ لا وجهَ لي في الحُبِّ يَشْفَعُ لي

ولا دنانيرَ في جيْبي تُزَكِّيني

ولا دنانيرَ في جيْبي تُزَكِّيني

So I said, "I have no face to intercede for me in love,

So I said, I've no charm in love to intercede for me,

nor dinars in my pocket to commend me.

No dinars in my pocket to sanctify me.

وللنساءِ معاييرٌ يَقسْنَ بها

وللنساءِ معاييرٌ يَقسْنَ بها

حُبُّ الرِّجالِ بلا عَقْلٍ ولا دينِ

حُبُّ الرِّجالِ بلا عَقْلٍ ولا دينِ

And women have standards by which they measure

For women have standards by which they measure

men's love, without reason or faith."

Men's love, devoid of reason and religion.
