Take another look, and grant me a glimpse,

So I do not die without seeing Ramallah.

My heart, as Christ said to Mary,

And as the palm tree's trunk yearned for Mary.

I am this land's farmer; my life is my wheat.

From one rising, lusting for tenderness, besotted,

In the world's street I shattered into a cloud,

    Dusky, extorting anguish—perhaps it is

Toward heaven, and God extends His rope.

Take me to the Andalusia of absence—for perhaps

The horse has wearied, and that is the last neigh.

And buying the oil of the affluent is humiliation.

And mine are the tears; sorrow knows its own.

Cardamom has tenderness's compass; and a wanderer

The heart is the sheath of memories; who

Came upon a sword within the ribs and drew it?

Be yourself; the mothers' voice, torn

By tears, is nobler than the state's anthem.

And the brave man's widow's shirt, stained

With longing, terrifies an occupier's flag.

Who are you to Jacob? How did you disbelieve him

And believe a wolf within you that betrays his son?

How did you tear the shirt of your love from my blood

In Joseph's well—and the shirt is the journey?

Did you sell it in the wind, in a moment of betrayal?

And did you settle for a coin in exchange for beauty?

From Solomon the Wise I have a chivalry

In strength that does not wrong an ant.

So if you hate, you lose all your love.

And the rifle is a dissolute whore.

Go to your fear within you, alone,

Naked of any arrogance and any abasement.

Ash passes into ash, and always

A moon shines, and we are a few crescents.

So hear your enemy within you, and hear Adam,

To see whether you want to embrace him or kill him.
