The path of loving you is the bond of my faith and my creed.
Your love is the pillar of my faith and doctrine
You are my heart's wishes, my petition, and my desire.
You are the wish of my heart, my request and pursuit
وَكَدَّرْتُمُand you clouded بِالْبُعْدِwith distance صَافيَthe clear مَشْرَبيmy draught

You have clouded my clear draught with your distance.
You disturbed the calmness of my waterhole with distance
I hoped for a dream-phantom to visit me,
I craved an apparition or a mirage to console me
عَزِيزٍproud يَرىsees ذُلِّيmy abasement لَدَيْهِbefore him فَيَنْشَطُّso he draws away

Of a proud one who sees my abasement before him and draws away.
A dear one who sees my humility before him, and is cheered
A fickle one banished sleep from me with his delays,
Sickly, he denied seeing me with his blindness and unfairness, and the length of his boredom
وَجَوْرِand the injustice of تَجَنِّيهِhis accusations وَطُولِand the length of مَلاَلِهِhis weariness

And with the injustice of his accusations and his prolonged weariness.
Long-lasting, he did not allow the apparition of his imagination
Ever delaying, he would not grant even the phantom of his image.
I hoped to ascend with the goodness of his company
طَمُعْتُI hoped بِأنْthat أَعْلُوَI might rise بِطِيبِthrough the sweetness of وِصَالِهِunion with him

I hoped to rise through the sweetness of union with him.
So why does separation make my mind deteriorate?
Why, then, does my mind sink through estrangement?
One who won my heart and sight abused me
سَبَانيcaptured me حَبِيبٌa beloved حَازَpossessed قَلْبيmy heart وَنَاظِرِيand my gaze

A beloved captured me, possessing my heart and gaze.
He told tales of flashes of eyes of the unfaithful
He mirrored the gleams in the eyes of gazelle fawns.
When he appeared before me, he confused my thoughts
وَلَمَّاand when تَبَدَّىappeared ليto me تَبَلْبَلَbecame confused خَاطِرِيmy mind

When he appeared to me, my mind fell into confusion.
I was struck by an arrow from languid eyes
I was pierced by an arrow from languid eyes.
It has embers in my mind, and ashes on my head
لَهَاthey have فِيin الْحَشَاthe breast وَقْدٌfire وَفِيand in مَفْرِقيthe crown of my head وَحْطُa blow

They kindle fire in my breast and deal a blow to the crown of my head.
Passion dwelling in my brain was enough for me
A passion lodged in my lifeblood has been enough for me.
It crept into my heart and confused my mind
سَرىcoursed بِفُؤَادِيthrough my heart وَالْحَشَاand the breast فِيalong مَحَجَّتيmy path

It coursed through my heart and breast along my path.
So my will failed me and does not support me
So my reproacher could not stand against my argument.
How vast this sea of longing in which I swim

The sea of longings overflowed, and I remained in my deep waters,
I hover in it floating like a duck
Circling there, swimming as ducks swim.
A friend of your love, how can he heal his sickness?
حَلِيفُa devotee of هَوَاكُمْlove for you كَيْفَhow يُشْفىis soothed غَلِيلُهُhis burning thirst

How can the devotee of your love have his burning thirst soothed?
A patient from your abandonment, how can he cure his illness?
One sickened by your coldness—how can that ailing one recover?
When I saw patience block its path
وَلَمَّاand when رَأَيْتُI saw الصَّبْرَpatience سُدَّwas barred سَبِيلُهُits path

When I saw that patience's path was barred,
My tears overflowed, then its passage flooded
My eye's tears surged, then their channel overflowed,
Like Noah's flood whose coast cannot be contained
كَطُوفَانِlike the flood of نُوحٍNoah لاَnot يُرَامُcan be reached لَهُfor it شَطُّa shore

Like Noah's flood, whose shore cannot be reached.
I gave him my soul and followed with my body
I gave him my soul and sent my body after it.
The strength of my patience in separation has weakened
وَعَظْمُand the bone of اصْطِبَارِيmy endurance بِالْقَطِيعَةَthrough estrangement قَدْindeed وَهَنْweakened

And estrangement has weakened the bone of my endurance.
And my wounded heart - separation has damaged it
And sorrow has ravaged my tormented heart.
My doctor eulogized me for loving someone
طَبِيبيmy physician رَثىfelt pity مِنْat نُحُوليmy wasting away بِحُبِّthrough love of مَنْone who

My physician pitied my wasting away for love of one
Who tyrannizes me with long estrangement, unequalled among mankind
Who assails me alone among all people with prolonged abandonment.
His love remains in my heart
مَحَبَّتُهُlove for him فِيin الْقَلْبِthe heart عِنْدِيwithin me مُقِيمَةٌabiding

Love for him dwells within my heart.
We renew the ecstasy though it is old
We renew the passion within me, though that love is longstanding.
The sweetness of my heart is found in none but him
وَسَلْوَةُand consolation for قَلْبيmy heart عَنْfrom سِواهُanyone but him عَدِيَمةٌnonexistent

My heart finds no consolation from anyone but him.
The vanguard of my rapture was never defeated
No defeat has daunted the vanguard of my passion.
For love has comrades, unmatched by any group
وَلِلْحُبِّand love has رَهْطٌa company لاَnot يُمَاثِلُهُequals it رَهْطُa company

Love has a company no other company can equal.
He persisted in estrangement, breaking custom
He prolonged abandonment, contrary to his habit.
The nights of union are no longer scheduled
وَأَمْسَتْand became لَيَاليthe nights of الْوَصْلِunion غَيْرَnot مُعَادَةٍrepeated

And the nights of union are no longer repeated.
Since he left me, my sorrow increases
Since they left me, my anguish has increased.
Long nights pass that were once joyful
طُلُولٌruins خَلَتْstood empty وَاسْتَوْحَشَتْand grew desolate بَعْدَafter سَادَةٍmasters

Ruins stood empty and desolate after their masters departed.
They are in my heart whether close or distant
They remain in my heart, whether they draw near or stay far away.
Indeed, separation gloats over us, destroyer of glory
لَقَدْindeed أَشْمَتَmade gloat الْبَيْنُseparation الْمُجِدُّrelentless بِنَاover us الْعِدَاthe enemies

Relentless separation has indeed made our enemies gloat over us.
My concord is shattered by parting into pieces
And parting has left my unity scattered.
If I do not find a victor over separation
وَإنْand if لَمْnot أجِدْI find ليfor me مِنْfrom يَدِthe hand of الْبَيْنِseparation مُنْجِدَاa rescuer

طِوالُthe long اللَّيَاليnights بِتُّI spent the night فِيهَاin them مُسَهَّدَاsleepless
And if I find no rescuer from separation's hand,
The long nights I spend prostrate in them
Through the long nights I lay sleepless,
Against them, though our pact was unfulfilled when we were close
عَلَيْهِمْfor them وَلَمْand did not يَثْبُتْhold firm إذاthen بَيْنَنَاbetween us شَرْطُa pledge

Longing for them; no pledge between us, then, held firm.
The quarter I loved went away; home feels lonesome
The dwelling of the one I love has vanished, and the homeland is desolate,
Of family, loved ones, neighbor, and dwellings
مِنَbereft of الأَهْلِfamily وَالأحْبَابَand loved ones وَالْجَارِand neighbors وَالسَّكَنْand companions

Bereft of family, loved ones, neighbors, and companions.
I call out, though my heart despairs from the sadness
I call out, my heart exhausted by sorrow:
My nature refused to relent from loving whom
طِبَاعِيmy nature أَبَتْrefused أنْto تَنْثَنيturn away عَنْfrom وِدَادِlove for مَنْthose who

My nature refused to turn away from loving those
They made me drink from the cup of estrangement, unmixed
Who made me drink from abandonment's cup what al-raṭṭ (unclear) spat out.
They shot me with the arrow of estrangement, so I yearned
رَمَوْنيthey shot me بِسَهْمِwith the arrow of الْهَجْرِabandonment فَازْدَدْتُso I increased in رَغْبَةًlonging

They shot me with abandonment's arrow, and I longed all the more
More for them, yet they did not heed ties or company
For them, though they honored neither pledge nor companionship.

I have wearied of the path of passion for you
I have turned away from passion's path out of love

A prophet who guided us to righteousness and its paths,

Beloved of the All-Merciful, the seal of His messengers.
He created the universe for none but him
And He created the worlds only for his sake.

I rejoiced in what I was inspired to recall of his excellence.
And misery departed us; wrath is relieved
Misery has left us, and wrath has been lifted.
