My heart is sick, with no one to visit it.

You soothe it with what brings it no benefit.

Sleep has been banished from my eyes and is hard to find.

Long and wide stretches my separation from those I love.

And indeed I fear that it will bring about my death.

I gave them my love, but they betrayed it and did not keep faith.

They neither pitied my abasement nor showed compassion.

They urged on their mounts and did not stop.

I would ransom with my life those who left me and left behind

A blaze within my heart that tears cannot quench.

I suffer for a tender maiden who has captured my heart and mind.

She captivated me with a dawn beneath the night of her tresses.

For her my patience perished, and my eyes overflowed.

A maiden whom God fashioned as a delight for my mind,

Surpassing translucent jewels, perfect in every quality.

Because of her I rise languishing and reach evening love-enslaved.

She has left me thin of body, stricken with love.

She shot arrows of estrangement into my heart.

The languor of bewitching glances, as though,

When she gazes, she mirrors with them the eyes of a fawn.

One sick with love of her has no hope of survival.

And no healing charm is sought for one stung by abandonment.

The little dweller of the sand dune has stolen my reason.

I was bewitched by her in passion and wandered distraught with longing.

My eyelids have spoken of what I conceal.

A tender maiden went strutting among her companions.

The pride of her self-admiration makes her sway within her mantle.

So do not reproach me: I am enthralled by love of her.

My heart longed to win nearness to her,

And obtain union and concord, without a broken promise.

A lover whose beloved has struck him with rejection—

Let the valley but be mentioned, and his sobbing grows louder.

Grieving, he calls to you: is there anyone to answer him?

I have lost a time whose calamities drove me far away.

Through separation it keeps gaining strength against my weakness.

Throughout the night my eyes remain sleepless,

Watching for a phantom from Najil and a promised meeting.

Through all my long sorrow I have found no one to comfort me.

My time has perished, life has passed, and there has appeared

The herald of my graying, announcing departure.

I complained to her of my condition and my extreme anguish,

And of a fire of passion kindled between my ribs.

But she saw no justice in my words, nor did she understand.

I fled with my soul, then said to it: 'Return

To obedience to the Lord, for obedience to Him suffices.

Leave off speaking of beautiful women, so that you may earn praise.

Perhaps through that you may find favor and happiness.

And if, my soul, after straying you wish to be guided,

Then rise resolutely to praise Muhammad,

So that from the All-Merciful you may win a fair maiden and kindness.'

Bliss to whoever reaches his sanctuary and visits him,

And lodges in his assembly and beholds his dwelling,

Having made beautiful remembrance his watchword.

His distinction is that God invited him to visit,

And made him hear without sound or letter.

Small pebbles in his two palms, beyond all doubt,

Glorify God, and pure water flowed through them.

Noble and chaste—how often he worshipped in Hira!

Virtuous, with no equal among humankind to rival him.

He surpasses the full moon's radiance on the midmonth night.

My soul has firmly grasped the loop of his rope,

And clung to the noble lords of his family and his companions.

And we love the breeze that blows from the valley.

The wafting scent of powdered musk comes from the fragrance of his soil.

What wondrous soil, and what a fragrance!

His beauty has dazzled the shining full moon.

And his majesty perfumed the worlds with fragrance.

His qualities and deeds are well known.

His judgments are just, and his speech is true.

His promise is fulfilled, and he is beyond description.

His intercession is wealth whose treasure has enriched us.

All of us, together, are under his protection.

A plain account, needing no veiled allusion.

The harshness of the polytheists softened before his might.

And terror befell them through humiliation and the onslaught.

Their crowns and turbans were indeed brought low.

Not one of them emerged unscathed.

And how many youths and keen swords pressed on among them!

We decreed for them—and decrees are binding—

That their bodies be cleaved by bright swords and the charge.

I say to those who have gone far from me and those who drew near:

We have all been saved, every one of us, through intercession

From the Chosen One; praise and laudation belong to God.

Through him, a company has secured faith and worldly life.

So there is no fear of fire, nor terror of being swallowed by the earth.

He is near to the Lord, with no remoteness at all.

God's bringing him near was not in vain.

He has a band that guards his sanctuary from destruction.

Their horsemen are like lions, pouncing upon their enemies,

When the two hosts meet on the field of battle.

His armies annihilated his enemies without transgressing,

And went forth on charging A'waji steeds.

And many a family never ransomed itself from his captivity.

Who among the prophets is like him, now that

His virtues are recited to the people in the scriptures?

You see us standing, all of us, in his courtyard,

Trusting in the sincerity of his friendship.

So he bestowed on us from his abundant bounty.

We and all creation are beneath his banner,

His followers, while he stands foremost in the rank.
