Beauty has wine's power over souls.

How often has a sober person's reason vanished amid beauty!

If you reproached lovers for what they beheld,

you would reproach bodies without souls.

    Especially those whose standing rose

above describing a voluptuous woman and one wearing a sash,

and who were immersed in love for him whose lights

    led unruly bodies toward him—

the best of humankind, the path of guidance, praised in

the Criterion, the Gospel, and the Tablets.

Whoever sipped praise of him attained bliss

and with it healed the heart of its sorrows,

like the distinguished al-Bahlul, the scholar of his age,

pure in ardent love, a model for poets of praise.

His collection, The Refined Pearl, has risen high

among praise-poems, adorned with clarity's jewels.

Its verse has followed the eloquent path,

and its allusion was freed from explicit expression.

Its love poetry spares the discerning the need for an evening companion,

and its praise-poetry is surely a path to righteousness.

I kept hoping for its circulation among humankind,

to be recited every evening and morning,

until the lord of generosity undertook its printing,

and the nobleman renowned for bestowing gifts:

Umar al-Khashshab, the man of standing whose

judgments have met with every success.

May he remain enamored of spreading fine works,

rising through his resolve toward every success.

And when the splendor of its printing reached beauty's height,

and the apple harvest in its garden drew near,

I dated the beauty of The Refined Pearl thus:

"In print, it has wine's power over souls."
