O Imam of the Age, O chosen one of God,

and O you to whom the servants' affairs are entrusted.

You are the Messenger's scion and son of Ali,

God's proof and the guide who leads aright.

You are [God's] side, O proof of God,

over humankind, both settled and nomadic.

You are purity, sprung from the pure, as indeed

the Reminder has declared: there is no corruption in you.

You are the master of humankind and son of its masters,

a lord, son of glorious lords.

O son of the purest of humankind, your distance from us

is a blaze in hearts already aflame.

    لا تُرى في رُبىً وَلا في وهادِ

    This waiting has grown long, O best of guides;

you are seen neither on hills nor in valleys.

So lift affliction from us, O son of Fatimah,

and clear away our suffering without delay.

O God's succor, you are the one hoped for

to heal the hearts of every thirsty soul.

Exact vengeance for old blood-debts and for blood

that was spilled among the people of defiance.

I do not forget Husayn, O son of the Prophet,

alone among every oppressor and aggressor.

They killed him unjustly, for no cause,

    among noble protectors and defenders.

They carried his head, in insolence, like a full moon

shining atop a swaying, slender spear.

And the Prophet's daughters were taken captive as gifts

for the harlots, devourers of livers.

    Bareheaded after protection and honor,

the eyes of the corrupt behold them,

crying out, calling upon the Messenger of

God, the best of humankind, the noblest guide:

“My grandfather, here is Husayn among his supporters,

their bodies stained with their blood.

They killed them, though they had tasted no water,

not even a little to soothe a thirsty soul's burning thirst.

My grandfather, here is al-Sajjad, proof of the Lord of the

    Throne, unjustly led in fetters.”

And what happened happened beyond reckoning,

O my Imam, at the hands of every oppressor and aggressor.

Arise—may souls ransom you—O son of the pure,

and take vengeance on the people of impiety.

After God, you are the succor of all creation,

and the one hoped for to dispel the harshest afflictions.

You are God's gate, O son of Ali,

and the Generous, the Generous, and son of the Generous.

Set my affairs right, for I am your servant,

and guide me, my master, on the path of right guidance.

What would it cost you to show generosity to a humble servant

who seeks you throughout his life and on the Day of Calling?

And in closing: may blessings be upon you

from your Lord, as long as the wooden pulpit is mounted

by a preacher, or a traveler journeys to the House,

and peace until the ages themselves wear away.
