a sacred land and a hopeful people.
ياO صاحبbearer العيدof the feast السعيدjoyous لأمةfor a nation
يا صاحب العيد السعيد لأمة
أضحتit has become تُناديcalling out حرةfree وتناجيand speaking intimately
أضحت تُنادي حرة وتناجي
O bearer of a joyous feast for a nation
that has begun to call out and speak freely.
ذكرتit recalled لمولدكat your birth المكرمhonored نعمةa blessing
ذكرت لمولدك المكرم نعمة
فيin الملكkingship ذكرىthe memory ليلةof the Night المعراجof Ascension
في الملك ذكرى ليلة المعراج
At your noble birth, it recalled a blessing
in kingship, and the memory of the Night of Ascension.
آلتpassed سفينتهاits ship إليكto you فسقتهاand you steered it
آلت سفينتها إليك فسقتها
عفَّpure المقاصدin purpose آمنsafe الأمواجamid the waves
عفَّ المقاصد آمن الأمواج
Its ship passed into your hands, and you steered it,
pure in purpose, safe amid the waves.
لكto you عندهاfrom it ماwhat للمنجِّيis owed to the rescuer المفتديwho sacrifices himself
لك عندها ما للمنجِّي المفتدي
منof واجبduty عندfrom الوفيthe loyal one الناجيwho was saved
من واجب عند الوفي الناجي
To it, you are owed what is owed to a self-sacrificing rescuer:
a duty of gratitude from one loyal and saved.
حملتbore جوانحهاits hearts لواءكyour banner قبلماbefore
حملت جوانحها لواءك قبلما
حملتbore لواءكyour banner فخمةstately الأبراجthe towers
حملت لواءك فخمة الأبراج
Its hearts bore your banner before
the stately towers bore your banner.
الجيشthe army والأسطولand the fleet مماamong what تبتنيyou build
الجيش والأسطول مما تبتني
لفكاكto free أعناقnecks وكشفand dispel دياجيdarkness
لفكاك أعناق وكشف دياجي
The army and fleet are among what you build
to free necks from bondage and dispel darkness.
ضَمنَwithin المدىthe horizon المأمولhoped for ماwhat أجملتyou gathered منof
ضَمنَ المدى المأمول ما أجملت من
سببmeans وماand what أحسنتyou devised well منof منهاجa course
سبب وما أحسنت من منهاج
Within the hoped-for horizon lie the means you have gathered
and the sound course you have devised.
ماnot كانwere قومكyour people منamong طلابseekers رفاقهمof their companions
ما كان قومك من طلاب رفاقهم
بغزاةamong invaders أرضof land أوor جباةcollectors خراجof tribute
بغزاة أرض أو جباة خراج
Your people did not seek companions
among invaders of lands or collectors of tribute.
لجتpersisted عواذلهمtheir critics فزادهمand increased them هوىًin ardor
لجت عواذلهم فزادهم هوىً
ماwhat أكثرواthey multiplied فيin ضجةclamor ولجاجand contention
ما أكثروا في ضجة ولجاج
Their critics persisted, and only increased their ardor
with all their clamor and contention.
هلwill تستقرsettle غداًtomorrow هُنالِكَthere عصبةٌa band
هل تستقر غداً هُنالِكَ عصبةٌ
حرَّىburning الحشاinwardly منفوخةswollen الأوداجin the neck veins
حرَّى الحشا منفوخة الأوداج
Will a band settle there tomorrow,
their hearts burning, their neck veins swollen,
وتقرand grant للواديto the valley بكاملin full حقهits right
وتقر للوادي بكامل حقه
فيin السلمpeace بعدafter وقائعconflicts المهتاجof turmoil
في السلم بعد وقائع المهتاج
and grant the valley its full right
to peace after turbulent conflicts?
النيلthe Nile إنif لمnot يجرflows فيهin it محرراًfree
النيل إن لم يجر فيه محرراً
بدَّلتyou would turn فيضthe abundance زلالهof its clear water بأجاجinto brackish water
بدَّلت فيض زلاله بأجاج
If the Nile does not flow there freely,
its clear abundance will turn brackish.
إنindeed الخلافةthe caliphate بعضُpart of ماwhat عرضتoffered علىto
إن الخلافة بعضُ ما عرضت على
مصرَEgypt الشعوبُthe peoples بلهفةِwith the longing المحتاجof one in need
مصرَ الشعوبُ بلهفةِ المحتاج
The caliphate is part of what the peoples offered
to Egypt with the longing of those in need.
لكfor you دعوةa call فوقfrom atop المنابرthe pulpits منهمُfrom them
لك دعوة فوق المنابر منهمُ
سبقتpreceded إليكto you شعائرthe rites الحجّاجof the pilgrims
سبقت إليك شعائر الحجّاج
Their call for you rises from the pulpits;
it reached you before the pilgrims’ rites.
ستجيءwill come أفواجاًin throngs إليكto you وفودُهمtheir delegations
ستجيء أفواجاً إليك وفودُهم
واللّهand God حولaround مواكبthe processions الأفواجof the throngs
واللّه حول مواكب الأفواج
Their delegations will come to you in throngs,
with God around the processions of throngs.
ويبايعونكand they pledge allegiance to you بيعةan allegiance الصديقof al-Siddiq فيin
ويبايعونك بيعة الصديق في
واديكyour valley تحتbeneath هلالهits crescent الوهّاجradiant
واديك تحت هلاله الوهّاج
They will pledge allegiance to you as to al-Siddiq,
in your valley beneath its radiant crescent.
يثقونthey entrust بالحرمينthe Two Holy Sanctuaries فيكto you بمالكٍas one who holds
يثقون بالحرمين فيك بمالكٍ
لأعزِّthe noblest مفتاحٍkey لخيرto the finest رتاجgate
لأعزِّ مفتاحٍ لخير رتاج
They entrust the Two Holy Sanctuaries to you, as one who holds
the noblest key to the finest gate.
كانتit was عناءa burden للملوكfor kings وعلةًand an affliction
كانت عناء للملوك وعلةً
وغداًand tomorrow تمارسهاyou will administer it بغيرwithout علاجremedy
وغداً تمارسها بغير علاج
It was a burden and an affliction for kings,
yet tomorrow you will administer it without remedy.
وتردهاand you will turn it روضاًinto a garden لكلfor every موحدٍbeliever in one God
وتردها روضاً لكل موحدٍ
فيon الأرضearth بينamid مضايقnarrow passes وحراجand thickets
في الأرض بين مضايق وحراج
You will turn it into a garden for every believer in one God
on earth, amid narrow passes and thickets.
وتنالand you will attain ماwhat أعياdefied جدودَكyour forefathers نيلُهُits attainment
وتنال ما أعيا جدودَك نيلُهُ
وتعدُّand you will prepare للإسلامfor Islam خيرَthe finest سياجbulwark
وتعدُّ للإسلام خيرَ سياج
You will gain what your forefathers struggled to attain
and prepare for Islam its finest bulwark.
