أضحىbecame وقدwhile already غُلَّتwere shackled يداهhis two hands جليداsteadfast
أضحى وقد غُلَّت يداه جليدا
They said, “You lost heart.” I said, “What longing lover
Has ever been steadfast with his hands shackled?”
الحربwar فيin البلقانthe Balkans أهونُless severe مفزعاًin terror
الحرب في البلقان أهونُ مفزعاً
منthan موقفيmy plight يومthe day of الوداعfarewell بعيداfar away
من موقفي يوم الوداع بعيدا
War in the Balkans is less terrifying
Than my plight, far away, on the day of farewell.
وأناand I الوفيّthe faithful one كماas خلقتI was created لذاكرٍsurely remembering
وأنا الوفيّ كما خلقت لذاكرٍ
عهديmy pledge إذاwhen نسيforgot الرفاقthe companions عهوداpledges
عهدي إذا نسي الرفاق عهودا
And I, faithful as I was created, surely remember
My pledge when companions forget their pledges.
ياO مغرقيyou who drown me بالدمعin tears لوif يجريwere to flow دميmy blood
يا مغرقي بالدمع لو يجري دمي
تحتbeneath اللواءthe banner هناكthere رحتI would depart سعيداhappy
تحت اللواء هناك رحت سعيدا
O you who drown me in tears, if my blood were to flow
There beneath the banner, I would depart happy.
قتلthe death of الأبيِّthe proud man تطوعتvolunteered لكfor you نفسهhis soul
قتل الأبيِّ تطوعت لك نفسه
أولىbetter لهfor him منthan أنto يعودreturn كميداgrief-stricken
أولى له من أن يعود كميدا
Death for the proud man whose soul volunteered for you
Is better for him than returning grief-stricken.
إنيsurely I أحقmore deserving بأنof أعيشliving موفقاًguided to success
إني أحق بأن أعيش موفقاً
للطيباتin good deeds وأنand to أموتdie شهيداa martyr
للطيبات وأن أموت شهيدا
Surely I deserve to live, guided
To good deeds, and to die a martyr.
