  1. سلطان فاسٍ جدَّ اعداؤه

    وهو رخيُّ البال مزّاحُ

    The Sultan of Fez—his enemies strove in earnest,

    while he was carefree and fond of jesting.

  2. رثى له الأغيار في مشرق

    وهمه الحسناء والراحُ

    Outsiders in the East pitied him,

    while his thoughts were on the beautiful woman and wine.

  3. لا تعذلوه إن تلاهى ولم

    ينح على الملك كما ناحوا

    Do not reproach him if he amused himself and did not

    mourn the kingdom as they mourned;

  4. فإن في إفريقيا أمةً

    مأتمهم رقص وأفراحُ

    for in Africa there is a people

    whose mourning gatherings are dancing and festivities.
