The people envy me because I am

the neighbor of a rich man who helps those seeking refuge.

O people, the one to envy is only the one who

has gone far from him, for he is the formidable prince.

I am the envious one, not you.

Does anyone among you see the matter as clearly as I do?

He sees wealth spent neither on noble ends

nor on helping a poor soul worn down by grief.

And the poet of the region calls out, yet

he hears only a warning of ruin.

Like a bird complaining of fierce thirst

in a cage beside the course of a brook.

O nearest of neighbors, were it not for you, I would never

have seen a neighbor so wretched in conscience.
