The land’s flowers today, its heroes tomorrow—
O flowers of the land today, its heroes tomorrow,
God’s peace be upon you, companions!
God's peace be upon you, O companions.
سروركمyour joy بالعامin the year بشرىglad tidings بأنهthat it
ليصحبكمwill indeed accompany you لاno خوفfear فيهin it ولاnor جدبdrought
Your joy in the year is glad tidings that it
Your joy in the year is glad tidings that it
will attend you, free of fear and drought.
Will indeed accompany you, with neither fear nor drought in it.
رضيتمyou are content عنwith الأيامthe days والصلحُand the peace accord بينهاbetween them
وبينكمand between you أنthat لاnot يعودrecur لهاto them ذنبa wrong
You are reconciled with the days, and the pact between them
You are content with the days; the terms of peace between them
and you is that no wrong of theirs shall recur.
And you are that they shall do no wrong again.
لئنif indeed سرنيgladdened me أنthat يسقيَwaters النيلthe Nile غرسكمyour plantings
وتجمعكمand unites you آمالكمyour hopes فيهin it والحبand love
If I rejoiced that the Nile should water your planting,
Though it gladdened me that the Nile waters your plantings,
and that your hopes and love should unite you there,
And your hopes in it and love unite you,
فقدyet indeed ساءنيsaddened me أنيthat I تخلفتI remained behind عنكمُapart from you
كمنlike one who تاهlost his way فيin بيداءa desert غادرهاleft it الركبthe caravan
it grieved me that I remained behind, away from you,
It saddened me that I have fallen behind you,
like one lost in a wilderness from which the caravan has departed.
Like one lost in a desert the caravan has left.

عسانيperhaps I may أوفِّيrepay fully دينهمthe debt owed to them خفقfluttered القلبthe heart
Now, whenever I contemplate some good for my people,
And now, if I plan some good for my people,
hoping to repay my debt to them, my heart throbs.
Hoping to repay my debt to them, my heart flutters.
وتدفعنيand urges me on النجوىinner whispering ويجذبنيand draws me الأسىsorrow
فماyet not ساقنيdrove me onward دفعٌa push ولاnor ردنيturned me back جذبa pull
My inmost voice drives me, while sorrow draws me back;
And inner whisperings urge me on, while sorrow pulls me back,
yet no push has driven me on, nor any pull turned me back.
Yet no push has driven me onward, nor any pull turned me back.
عتبتمyou reproached ولوand if تدرونyou knew حالthe condition وفيِّكمyour faithful one
لكانwould have been علىupon الأقدارthe fates ذلكمُthat (addressing you all) العتبthe reproach
You reproached me—but if you knew your faithful friend’s plight,
You reproached me; but if you knew your faithful friend's condition,
that reproach of yours would fall upon the Fates.
That reproach would fall upon fate.

وإنand even if عجزتproved powerless عنيto help me المواساةconsolation والطبand medicine
I do not seek a cure by despairing of my hopes,
And I seek no healing by giving up my hopes,
though consolation and medicine are powerless to help me.
Even if consolation and medicine fail me.

It grieves free men that they are never stirred
It pains free men that they are stirred
by letters and books except through complaints.
By letters and books with nothing but complaints.
متىwhen يرعويcomes to his senses الباغيthe oppressor عليناagainst us وينتهيand desists
ويصبحand becomes حزبthe party المخلصينthe sincere هوit الحزبthe party
When will the aggressor against us come to his senses and desist,
When will our oppressor relent and desist,
and the party of the devoted become the true Party?
And the party of the sincere become the preeminent party?
قصارىthe utmost aim جهاديmy struggle أنthat أرىI see مصرEgypt حرةfree
ولاand no زلزلتwas shaken أرضٌland ولاnor وقعتbroke out حربwar
The utmost aim of my struggle is to see Egypt free,
The utmost aim of my struggle is to see Egypt free,
with no land convulsed and no war breaking out.
With no land shaken and no war breaking out.
