المؤمنون إليك مستبقونا

لذمارهم وديارهم فادونا

The believers are racing toward you,

Sacrificing themselves for their honor and their homes.

فاحشد كتائبك التي أعددتها

للحق أبلجَ والرجاءِ متينا

Muster the battalions you have prepared

For radiant truth and steadfast hope.

وخذ الوفاء من الصوارم والقنا

إن لم تجد من دهرك الموفينا

Take fidelity from sharp swords and spears

If you find none in your age who keep their word.

واترك لقوتك الرهيبة حكمها

تجد العداة إليك يحتكمونا

Let your fearsome strength pronounce its judgment:

You will find your enemies submitting their disputes to you.

فإذا امتلكت البأس فيهم غالباً

فقد امتلكت العدل والقانونا

When you possess might that prevails over them,

You possess justice and the law.

عظ يا أمير المؤمنين ممالكاً

ذهبت شمالاً بالأذى ويمينا

Admonish, O Commander of the Faithful, kingdoms

That have spread harm to left and right.

خافت جميلك أن ينال من الورى

ما لا تنال شراسة الباغينا

They feared your kindness would win from humanity

What the aggressors' ferocity could not win.

باتت تمد لك المصايد عنوة

حيناً وتختلس المكايد حيا

They began laying snares for you openly

At times, and stealthily contriving plots [final word unclear].

يا آل عيسى ما لعيسى لم يقم

مستنكراً ما أنتمُ جانونا

O followers of Jesus, why has Jesus not risen

To denounce the crimes you commit?

أوصاكم بالمعتدين فما لكم

بالآمن المأمون فتّاكينا

He charged you concerning aggressors—why, then, are you

Murderers of the peaceful and secure?

ماذا جناه المسلمون عليكمُ

وهمُ على الأمصار غلّابونا

What wrong did the Muslims do you

When they held sway over the lands?

هل كان منهم يوم شركمُ سوى

عفو القدير وقدرة العافينا

On the day of your wickedness, did they offer anything but

The pardon of the powerful and the power of those who pardon?

ضاعت مراحمهم سدى ولوَ اَنَّها

حلت بمحتفظ لَكُنَّ ديونا

Their mercies were wasted in vain; had they

Fallen upon one who remembered, they would have remained debts.

ومن البلية أن تقوم وحوشكم

فوضى المخالب تدعى التمدينا

Among the calamities is that your beasts rise,

Their claws in anarchy, claiming civilization.

يا مغرب الإسلام فيك تعلةٌ

تسلي أخاك المشرق المغبونا

O western lands of Islam, in you is a consolation

That comforts your wronged brother, the East.

وبقية الأسلاب فيك مذكِّرٌ

ومحرض لحماتك الباقينا

The remnants of the spoils in you are a reminder

And an incitement to your remaining defenders.

لحقت بتونس والجزائر بغتةً

مراكشٌ فليبكها الباكونا

Suddenly, Tunisia and Algeria were joined

By Marrakesh—let those who weep mourn her.

وأبت على العادي طرابلسٌ وما

تخذت سوى مهج الأباة حصونا

Tripoli defied the aggressor, and

Made no fortresses but the hearts of the unbowed.

عربية زهراء يحمي خدرها

عرب كما تحمي الليوث عرينا

A radiant Arab beauty, whose secluded chamber is guarded

By Arabs, as lions guard a den.

صيد يدبر أمرهم ويسوسهم

صيد من الأتراك قوامونا

Proud men, whose affairs are directed and who are governed

By proud Turks, steadfast in their charge.

يا أخت مصر وفي حشاها جمرة

لبيك حتى يكتفي الداعونا

O sister of Egypt—in Egypt's breast burns an ember—

She answers, 'At your service,' until the callers are satisfied.

بعثت إليك بزادها وتود لو

بعثت إليك الجند مبتدرينا

She sent you her provisions, and wishes she could

Send you soldiers rushing to your aid.

والنيل لو ملكت أعنته جرى

خلف القلوب مودة وحنينا

The Nile, if she held its reins, would flow

After the hearts, in love and longing.

ما للحيود وما لمصر وما بها

إلا شجونٌ تستثير شجونا

What room for turning aside—and what has Egypt, and all within her,

But sorrows that awaken sorrows?

ما كان للمتطوع المختار أن

يشكو قيوداً أو يخاف ظنونا

The willing volunteer should not

Complain of restraints or fear suspicions.

هل بعد ما جاد الوفي بروحه

يتلمس التصديق والتأمينا

After the faithful man has freely given his soul,

Must he seek approval and assurances?

حسب الخلافة من إمارة مصر ما

أصمى العداة وأفحم الواشينا

Enough for the Caliphate, from Egypt's emirate, is what

Struck the enemies dead and silenced the slanderers,

وأعزَّ حجةَ تاجِ مصرَ وعرشها

بالمعطيات البرَّ والمعطينا

And strengthened the case of Egypt's crown and throne

Through the women giving charity and the men who give.

يا حبذا عمرُ الجليل موفقاً

للصابرين الثابتين معينا

How welcome is illustrious Umar, granted success,

A helper to the patient and steadfast.

وحنان أم المؤمنين تفيضه

بسماحها ونوالها مقرونا

And the tenderness the Mother of the Believers pours forth,

Joined with her generosity and her gifts.

يا ليتني سايرت بعثتها عسى

أأسو جريحاً أو أغيث طعينا

Would that I had accompanied her mission, hoping

To tend a wounded man or rescue one stabbed.

وأطوف بالشهداء في ميدانهم

فأهز شم جباله تأبينا

And go among the martyrs upon their field,

Shaking its lofty mountains with elegies.

وأرى النفوس الحائمات على الوغى

من بعد ما لحقت بعلِّيِّينا

And see the souls hovering over battle

After they had reached 'Illiyyin,

وعزائم الأبطال حول حماهمُ

مشدودة وهزائم الطاغينا

And the heroes' resolves around their protected ground,

Drawn tight, and the tyrants' defeats.

يا آل رومة تطلبون أمانياً

ختالة أم تطلبون منونا

O people of Rome, do you seek hopes

That deceive—or do you seek death?

جئتم تجرون الحديد ورحتمُ

بحديدكم في اليمِّ مغلولينا

You came dragging iron, and departed

Shackled in your iron in the sea.

ورقصتم فيه سكارى فارقصوا

في الليلة السوداء مذبوحينا

You danced upon it drunk—then dance

Slaughtered in the black night.

لئنِ استفزكمُ صليلُ سيوفكم

فلقد تبدل زفرة وأنينا

If the ringing of your swords stirred you,

It has indeed become a sigh and a groan.

وإن ازدهتكم مُعْلَماتُ ثيابكم

فلقد لبستم بعدهن الطينا

And if your emblazoned garments made you proud,

You have since clothed yourselves in mud.

تهتم على نصحائكم وأبيتمُ

فالآن تنصحكم لظى الرامينا

You were arrogant toward your advisers and refused;

Now the marksmen's blaze counsels you.

هاتوا الذئاب إلى الليوث فخمسة

منهم أبادوا منكمُ خمسينا

Bring the wolves to the lions: five

Of them annihilated fifty of you.

واستجمِعوا حيتانَكم ونسوركم

فالصائدون هناك مرتقبونا

Muster your whales and your eagles:

The hunters there lie in wait.

واستكثروا الزاد الشهيَّ فإنكم

وسلاحَكم والزادَ مأخوذونا

Heap up delicious provisions, for you,

Your weapons, and your stores will all be taken.

لم يبق منهم معسر أو أعزل

بعد الذي غنموه منتصرينا

Not one of them remains poor or unarmed

After what they seized in victory.

فكلوا من الزقّوم إن جاوزتمُ

حد الأسارى واشربوا الغسلينا

Eat of Zaqqum if you pass

Beyond the bounds of captives, and drink ghislin.

واستكملوا المدد الكبير بفتيةٍ

سيقوا إلى الهيجاء هيّابينا

Complete your vast reinforcements with youths

Driven toward battle in terror.

سيموت خوفاً يوم يشهد هولها

من لم يمت قبل القتال جنونا

Of fear will die, on seeing its horror,

Whoever did not die of madness before battle.

أحسبتمُ بطحاء برقة حانةً

لكمُ وغزوَ القيروان مجونا

Did you think Barqa's plain a tavern

For you, and the invasion of Kairouan mere revelry?

أم تظفرون وإن من أعدائكم

فيها سهولاً تلتوي وحزونا

Or will you triumph, though among your enemies

There are twisting plains and rugged heights?

أم تملأون مع الدماء بطونكم

ذهباً وما ترك الحميم بطونا

Or fill your bellies, along with blood,

With gold, when scalding water has left no bellies?

أعياكمُ بأس الحماة فرحتمُ

تشفون غلتكم من الثاوينا

The defenders' might exhausted you, so you went

To slake your rage upon the inhabitants.

مثَّلتمُ بشيوخهم ونسائهم

وذبحتمُ الأطفال جبارينا

You mutilated their elders and their women,

And slaughtered children as tyrants.

وخشيتمُ شممَ الأسير وكبرَه

فقتلتمُ المأسور والمسجونا

You feared the captive's proud spirit and dignity,

So you killed the captive and the prisoner.

حطمت عظامَهم سيوفُكُمُ فهل

جرحت مواثيقاً لهم ويقينا

Your swords shattered their bones—but did they

Wound their covenants and their certainty?

غضبت عليكم أرضكم وسماؤكم

والدين لو تدري العقارب دينا

Your earth and your sky are angry with you,

And religion too—if scorpions knew religion.

وتنكرت لكمُ وجوه صحابكم

وتبدَّل الحلفاء لوَّامينا

Your companions' faces have turned against you,

And your allies have become reproachers.

هل ترفعون رؤسكم بعد الذي

أخزاكمُ أم تفتحون عيونا

Can you raise your heads after what

Disgraced you, or open your eyes?

حاربتمُ ففشلتمُ وستلتوي

أحقادكم فيكم فتحتربونا

You fought and failed, and will coil

Your hatreds within yourselves, until you fight one another.

ويبيت فوضى ذلك الملك الذي

رمتم زيادته بمنقوصينا

And that dominion will fall into chaos which

You sought to enlarge through those you diminished.

أعلنتمُ ضمَّ البلاد وأعلنت

أسد البلاد النصر والتمكينا

You proclaimed the annexation of the land, while

The land's lions proclaimed victory and firm dominion.

يا قائد الأسطول تلك بحارهم

أأمنت أعماقاً لها ومتونا

O commander of the fleet, those seas are theirs:

Have you felt safe from their depths and surfaces?

أثقلته بالدارعين فعد به

ملآن من أشلائهم مشحونا

You weighed it down with armored men; return with it

Full, laden with their dismembered remains.

وإذا وصلت إلى مراسيه التي

وهنت فإنك أبلغ الناعينا

When you reach its anchorages, which

Have weakened, you will be the most eloquent bearer of death-tidings.

احمل إلى القوم اليقين فإنهم

ملّوا هناك خديعة الراوينا

Carry certainty to the people, for they

Have tired there of the narrators' deception.

واذكر غنائمك التي تُرضي بها

شعباً أشلَّ وعيهلاً مفتونا

Tell of your spoils, with which you satisfy

A crippled people and a deluded reckless fool.

يا آل عثمان المصيرُ إليكمُ

وأرى هلالَكمُ السعيد ضمينا

O house of Osman, the outcome rests with you,

And I see your fortunate crescent as its guarantor.

ولكل قوم عندكم ثارٌ فما

هم بالغوه ولا همُ ناسونا

Every people has a vengeance to exact from you—yet

They will neither attain it nor forget it.

إن تقذفوهم في الجحيم أقمتمُ

حدَّ العقوبة غير ظلّامينا

If you cast them into hell, you would have imposed

The due punishment, without committing injustice.

لم يلق قوم في حماية ملكهم

بالعدل والإحسان ما تجدونا

No people, while protecting their dominion

With justice and kindness, has faced what you face.

ما لي أرى في سائر البلقان من

بعد التألب والضجيج سكونا

Why do I see throughout the Balkans,

After the rallying and clamor, silence?

لا رحبت بالواثبين عليكمُ

أرض ولا حمل العباب سفينا

May those who leap upon you find no welcome

On earth, nor may the surging sea carry a ship.

ولقد مضى عيد عليكم مشفق

فاستقبلوا عيداً لكم ميمونا

An anxious feast has already passed over you;

Welcome now a feast auspicious for you.

يا ابن الخليفة دونك الوادي الذي

تلقى أخاً لك ربَّهُ وخدينا

O son of the Caliph, before you lies the valley which

Received a brother of yours as its lord and companion.

هبة الخلافة للإمارة أصبحت

إرثاً كما شاء العزيز ثمينا

The Caliphate's gift to the emirate has become

A precious inheritance, as al-Aziz wished.

ناجاك مؤتمن الضمير فلم يدع

سراً لممتلئِ الضمير مصونا

A man trusted at heart confided in you, leaving no

Secret guarded within a heart filled to the brim.

في كل ناحية لواء خافقٌ

ومسلِّمٌ لك ينثر النسرينا

In every quarter a banner flutters,

And someone greeting you scatters wild roses.

ويودُّ في أتراب مصرَ رعيةٌ

متشوقون إليك لو يفدونا

In Egypt's sister lands are subjects who wish,

Longing for you, that they might come as a delegation.

قرِّبْ إليهم من ركابك حظهم

إني أراهم منه يقتربونا

Bring their share of access to your retinue nearer to them;

I see them drawing nearer to it.

إن الذي جعل الخلافة فيكمُ

جعل المودة والمحبة فينا

He who placed the Caliphate among you

Placed affection and love within us.

إن ائتلاف قلوبنا وقلوبكم

ليمدُّ أيديكم إلى أيدينا

The union of our hearts and yours

Surely stretches your hands toward ours.

يا آل مصرَ وفي الحوادث عبرة

فتصفَّحوها اليوم معتبرينا

O people of Egypt, there is a lesson in events:

Survey them today, taking heed.

ولقد أثابكمُ الخليفة بالذي

بولائكم حاولتموه سنينا

The Caliph has rewarded you with what

You sought through your loyalty for years.

هذا ضياء الدين شرَّفَ أرضَكم

فاستقبلوه اليوم محتفلينا

Here is Diya al-Din, honoring your land:

Welcome him today in celebration.

وتعجلوا الآمال عاليةً فقد

بعث الرشيد إليكم المأمونا

Hasten toward lofty hopes, for

Al-Rashid has sent you al-Ma'mun.

أولى ضيوفَكُمُ الجميلَ فأنتمُ

في عزة وضيوفكم راضونا

He bestowed kindness upon your guests, and you

Are held in honor, and your guests are content.

ما كان سبقهمُ إليه تجمّلاً

لكنه إقرارُ معترفينا

Their haste toward it was not mere show,

But the acknowledgment of those who concede.

فدعوا القضية للخليفة علَّكم

بعد الوداد إليهمُ ناجونا

Leave the matter to the Caliph; perhaps you

Will find safety after friendship toward them.

ما كان من حرجٍ على مصرٍ إذا

جربتمُ بعد الجفاء اللينا

There would be no hardship for Egypt if

You tried gentleness after estrangement.

لو تعرفون لكل يوم حقَّه

لحمدتمُ التدريب والتمرينا

If you knew the due of each day,

You would praise practice and training.

إني أرى العهد الجديد مباركاً

وأرى سلامتكم له عربونا

I see the new era as blessed,

And I see your well-being as a pledge for it.
