Speak again, O orator of the free cause that

brought solace to free minds and hearts.

I answer you after a while of silence, and just as

you called upon me to do, I shall make reply.

I stood, unsure whether I was counting events

turning before my eyes, or counting sins.

I bore on behalf of my people a share of sorrow,

yet sought no share of the reward for striving.

I peered deep into the unseen decrees, that perhaps

I might see deliverance near for the two nations.

The fertility of its soil cannot avail a nation

unless the character of its men is fertile too.

    فلم أر إلا سالباً وسليبا

    My people—soldiers and leaders—are divided today;

I have seen only plunderer and plundered.

Is it party principles I see, or interests

following among them in every kind and form?

The wars of the world have ended, yet still

I see wars among the sons of the land.

Their foe enlisted my people against my people,

then struck in the north and grew overbearing in the south.

Who will carry the matter through for them decisively,

if they heed neither critic nor one who calls them to account—

who will bring them back, after estrangement and separation,

as comrades, as a sick man finds a physician?

Then Egypt’s destiny will be assured,

as I, poet and orator, have wished it for her.
