O people of Egypt, what she suffers is anguish enough.

Will the unity that shattered return to you?

The times have grown grave, yet your disunity has not ceased.

Indeed, what I feared from you has come to pass.

إن الذي كاد من ماضي مراسكمُ

إن الذي كاد من ماضي مراسكمُ

يرتد عنكم تمادى فيكمُ طمعا

يرتد عنكم تمادى فيكمُ طمعا

Indeed, he who, faced with your former resistance, nearly

retreated from you has persisted in his greed toward you.

أيحرس البيت ساه في جوانبه

مضلل وعليل يشتكي الوجعا

مضلل وعليل يشتكي الوجعا

Can a heedless man within its bounds guard the house,

misguided and ailing, complaining of pain?

طلبتم الغاية القصوى وآفتها

طلبتم الغاية القصوى وآفتها

أن تذهبوا فرقاً أو ترجعوا شيعا

أن تذهبوا فرقاً أو ترجعوا شيعا

You sought the ultimate goal, yet its bane

is to go forth divided or return in factions.

أما يوفِّق في الوادي سياستَكم

أما يوفِّق في الوادي سياستَكم

هاد كما وفق الآحاد والجمعا

هاد كما وفق الآحاد والجمعا

Will your politics in the valley not be brought into harmony

by a guide, as he reconciled individuals and the multitude?

وكلما قام منكم نابهٌ فطن

وكلما قام منكم نابهٌ فطن

إلى الوزارة صحتم حوله فزعا

إلى الوزارة صحتم حوله فزعا

And whenever an eminent, discerning man among you rose

to the ministry, you shouted around him in alarm.

وكلما رامها منكم أخو ثقة

وكلما رامها منكم أخو ثقة

أثرتمُ ريباً واهتجتمُ بدعا

أثرتمُ ريباً واهتجتمُ بدعا

And whenever a trustworthy man among you sought it,

you stirred up doubts and raged with strange innovations.

للخصم أم لكم المستوزرون به

للخصم أم لكم المستوزرون به

أقرَّ مَن ضرها يوماً ومن نفعا

أقرَّ مَن ضرها يوماً ومن نفعا

Are the ministers appointed through him for the foe or for you?

He retained those who once harmed her and those who helped.

وما استوى القصد منكم والغلوُّ لها

وما استوى القصد منكم والغلوُّ لها

وليس من راح يغريها كم شفعا

وليس من راح يغريها كم شفعا

Your moderation and your excess toward her are not alike,

nor is one who goes on inciting her like one who intercedes.

خذوا عليه عهود اللّه وانتظروا

لعله خير من أوفى بها ورعى

لعله خير من أوفى بها ورعى

Take pledges before God from him, and wait;

perhaps he will prove the best at fulfilling and honoring them.

أليس في أمسه ذكرى وموعظة

مما رأى غيره منكم وما سمعا

مما رأى غيره منكم وما سمعا

Is there not in his past a reminder and a lesson,

from what someone else saw of you and what he heard?

يرضى وزارتكم فرضاً عليه لكم

يرضى وزارتكم فرضاً عليه لكم

وليس يرضى بها مرعى ومنتجعا

وليس يرضى بها مرعى ومنتجعا

He accepts your ministry as a duty he owes you,

and does not accept it as a pasture and a grazing ground.

أولى بمن تبعت شوراه أمته

أولى بمن تبعت شوراه أمته

أن لا يكون لباغ حولها تبعا

أن لا يكون لباغ حولها تبعا

It befits one whose nation has followed his counsel

not to become a follower of an aggressor circling her.

لكم عليه رقيب من سريرته

إن لم يجد مشرفاً منكم ومطَّلعا

إن لم يجد مشرفاً منكم ومطَّلعا

You have a watcher over him in his own conscience,

if he finds no overseer or observer among you.

تربّص الخصم وامتدت حبائله

تربّص الخصم وامتدت حبائله

إلى يقينكمُ بعد الذي انتزعا

إلى يقينكمُ بعد الذي انتزعا

The foe lay in wait, and his snares stretched

toward your certainty, after what he had wrested away.

أنترك الأمر للباغي يصرِّفه

في كل ناحية سنّاً ومشترعا

في كل ناحية سنّاً ومشترعا

Shall we leave the matter to the aggressor to direct,

in every quarter, enacting rules and legislating?

قد استوى لينه فيها وشدته

كما استوى من تحداه ومن ضرعا

كما استوى من تحداه ومن ضرعا

His leniency and his severity there have proved the same,

just as those who defied him and those who submitted have fared the same.

طال النزاع حماة الملك بينكمُ

أماله حاسم من بعد ما اتسعا

أماله حاسم من بعد ما اتسعا

The dispute among you has dragged on, defenders of the realm;

has it no one to settle it, after it has grown so wide?

كادت تضيع ضحاياه عليه سدى

ويذهب الثمن الغالي الذي دفعا

ويذهب الثمن الغالي الذي دفعا

The sacrifices made for it were nearly in vain,

and the high price that was paid nearly went to waste.

دعوا جميعاً لذاك الخصم حقكم

دعوا جميعاً لذاك الخصم حقكم

أو جاهدوا فيه يا أحزاب مصر معا

أو جاهدوا فيه يا أحزاب مصر معا

All of you, surrender your right to that foe,

or fight for it together, O parties of Egypt.

What recourse has an unarmed, cheated man against a belligerent foe

girded with fire and armored in steel?

إيمانكم واليقين اليوم عدتكم

إيمانكم واليقين اليوم عدتكم

وهل رأيتم لطاغٍ مؤمناً خضعا

وهل رأيتم لطاغٍ مؤمناً خضعا

Your faith and certainty are your weapons today;

and have you ever seen a believer submit to a tyrant?

أيطلب النيلُ يسقي زرعَه رجل

منكم ولا يملك الحقل الذي زرعا

منكم ولا يملك الحقل الذي زرعا

Does a man ask the Nile to water his crop,

one of you, though he does not own the field he sowed?

خذوا الأمان من الدنيا لأنفسكم

خذوا الأمان من الدنيا لأنفسكم

من قبل أن تسألوها الري والشبعا

من قبل أن تسألوها الري والشبعا

Obtain security from the world for yourselves

before you ask it to quench your thirst and satisfy your hunger.

تعاونوا وخذوا للأمر عدته

تعاونوا وخذوا للأمر عدته

كم يسَّر الحزم أمراً بعد ما امتنعا

كم يسَّر الحزم أمراً بعد ما امتنعا

Work together, and gather the means the task requires;

how often has resolve made easy a task once beyond reach!

لا يقنع الشرف المنقوص ذا شمم

وإن يكن بعسير العيش مقتنعا

وإن يكن بعسير العيش مقتنعا

Diminished honor will not satisfy a man of pride,

even if he is content with a life of hardship.

أين المعيد إلى الوادي غريبكمُ

أين المعيد إلى الوادي غريبكمُ

من النوى والمريح الواله الولعا

من النوى والمريح الواله الولعا

Where is he who brings your exile back to the valley

from separation, and comforts the distraught, yearning one?

وأين من صنع النعمى لأمته

وأين من صنع النعمى لأمته

والعرش غير مباه بالذي صنعا

والعرش غير مباه بالذي صنعا

And where is he who brought blessings to his nation

and the throne, without boasting of what he did?

إني سمعت خطيباً وعده لكمُ

إني سمعت خطيباً وعده لكمُ

دين لعل الرضا فيما دعا وسعى

دين لعل الرضا فيما دعا وسعى

Indeed, I heard an orator whose promise to you

is a debt; perhaps satisfaction lies in what he urged and pursued.

إن لم تنل فئة إجماعكم فلكم

إن لم تنل فئة إجماعكم فلكم

بين الضمائر من ساوى ومن جمعا

بين الضمائر من ساوى ومن جمعا

If no faction wins your unanimous assent, then you have

within your consciences one who has made you equal and one who has united you.

ستحرجون إذا سادت نصيحته

ستحرجون إذا سادت نصيحته

فيكم غريمكم من بعد ما خدعا

فيكم غريمكم من بعد ما خدعا

You will confound—if his counsel prevails

among you—your adversary, after he has deceived you.
