يا صاحب العرش المكينِ

والتاج في البلد الأمينِ

O master of the steadfast throne,

and the crown in the secure land,

هذا مكانك في القلو

ب وذا سبيلك في العيونِ

your place is in hearts,

and your path is through the eyes.

سر في سبيل اللّه مت

بوع العقيدة واليقين

Go in God's path, followed

by conviction and certainty.

في موكب لولا جلا

لك باح بالسر المصون

In a procession that, but for your majesty,

would reveal the guarded secret,

تجري به محروسة

جري الخدين إلى الخدين

she moves in safety,

gliding from cheek to cheek.

مشهودة خيلاؤها

ومراحها بين السفين

Her proud bearing is plain to see,

and her exuberance among the ships.

تلقى تحيات الودا

د من المعاقل والحصون

She receives greetings of affection

from the strongholds and fortresses.

فإذا نزلت استقبلت

ك وفود آساد العرين

And when you disembark, you are welcomed

by delegations of lions from their dens.

وأقمت دون مراصد ال

حدثان كالجبل الرصين

You stand against the watchposts of

fate, firm as a mountain.

تترى إليك مكارم ال

سلطان من دنيا ودين

Honors of sovereignty come to you in succession,

in worldly life and in faith.

في معطفيك يرى الشما

ئل والمخايل في الجبين

In your two cloaks, noble traits are seen,

and signs of distinction upon your brow.

ولأنت خير من استشا

رته الخلائف في الشؤون

You are the best of those whom

the caliphs consulted on affairs.

لحسام جدك في كري

د مآثر الفتح المبين

Your grandfather's sword has, in Crete,

the exploits of manifest conquest.

فلكم أسال دماً هنا

ك وسلَّ من داء دفين

How much blood it spilled there,

and how it drew out a hidden sickness.

في ذكره عظة الملو

ك وخيفة الطاغي الخؤون

Its memory holds a lesson for kings

and dread for the treacherous tyrant.

إن الذي أزمعته

للملك آت بعد حين

What you have resolved

for the kingdom will come in time.

لا بد للمتعجِّل ال

آمال من ثقة الضمين

One impatient for his hopes must

trust the one who guarantees them.

رأيُ المثقف بالتجا

رب فوق هاتيك الظنون

Judgment refined by experience

stands above those suppositions.

إني أحن إلى فرو

ق وليس يشفع لي حنيني

I long for Faruq,

but my longing does not intercede for me.

إني على قرب المدى

متخلف جمُّ الشجون

Though the distance is short,

I remain behind, burdened with sorrows.

ليت الذي قدر الغرا

م يجود بالسبب المتين

Would that the one who ordained longing

grant me a firm bond.

ليت التي احتوت الرحا

ل إلى فروقٍ تحتويني

Would that she who carried the baggage

to Faruq would carry me.

إني أحق بظلها ال

ممدود والماء المعين

I have the stronger claim to her

broad shade and flowing water.

أشكو إليك بني الزما

ن ولا أرى من يشتكيني

I complain to you of the people of this age,

though I see no one who complains of me.

إن أطربتهم نغمتي

يوماً فما سمعوا أنيني

If my song delights them

one day, they still have not heard my groan.

هل ينتهي سجن البري

ء فقد وهَى جلد السجين

Will the innocent one's imprisonment end?

The prisoner's endurance has worn thin.

ويفي رهين الدين أم

لا ينقضي دين الرهين

Will the one bound by debt pay it, or

will his debt never end?

أمنَ الصوابِ بقاءُ هَ

ذا النجم في هذا السكون

Is it right for this

star to remain so still?

لو ينفع الشعر الثمي

ن سموت بالشعر الثمين

If precious poetry could help,

I would rise through precious poetry.

مولاي إني في مدي

حك مفرد شتى فنوني

My lord, in praising you

I devote all my varied arts.

هذا نصيب من ندا

ك وذا كتابي في يميني

This is a share of your generosity,

and here is my book in my right hand.

لا زال نيلك في الحمى

يجري كحبك في وتيني

May your bounty keep flowing through the land,

as your love flows through my heart's vein.
