Is it in a dream or a drunken daze that I imagine

what you propose to one who hopes?

لو عدت طفلاً ساذجاً ما صدَّقت

نفسي بأني في غدٍ أتموَّلُ

Even if I became a naive child again, I would not believe

that I myself would grow wealthy tomorrow.

ما زال بي التجريب حتى أنني

أصبحت أخشى ما به أتعلّلُ

أصبحت أخشى ما به أتعلّلُ

Experience has kept testing me until

I have come to fear the very thing with which I console myself.

لي من أذى أمسى ويومي زاجرٌ

عن أن أظن سلام ما أستقبل

عن أن أظن سلام ما أستقبل

The hurt of my yesterday and today warns me

against expecting safety in what awaits me.

قد عضني الدهر المطوّح غدوة

فعلمت ما كنت العشيّةَ أجهل

فعلمت ما كنت العشيّةَ أجهل

Time, which flings us about, bit me one morning,

so I learned what I had not known the evening before.

وأمضَّني الداء المبرِّح ليلةً

وأمضَّني الداء المبرِّح ليلةً

منحتني الخلقَ الذي أستكمل

منحتني الخلقَ الذي أستكمل

And excruciating illness tormented me one night,

a night that gave me the character I am perfecting.

لولا العواطف عشت دهري هادئاً

لولا العواطف عشت دهري هادئاً

تتزلزل الدنيا ولا أتزلزل

تتزلزل الدنيا ولا أتزلزل

Were it not for my feelings, I would live my life calmly;

the world would quake, yet I would not quake.

ولما أذبت جوانحي بقصيدة

في الصيف أهديها لمن لا يعقل

في الصيف أهديها لمن لا يعقل

Nor would I melt my heart into a poem

in summer, offering it to one who cannot understand.

وبعيشة دون الكفاف رضيت لو

لا أنني بشؤن غيري مُثقَل

لا أنني بشؤن غيري مُثقَل

And I would be content with a life below subsistence, were it

not that I am burdened with other people's concerns.

أيطاع في قومي رشيد معسر

أيطاع في قومي رشيد معسر

ولو اَنَّهُ فيهم نبي مرسل

ولو اَنَّهُ فيهم نبي مرسل

Is a wise, impoverished man obeyed among my people,

even if he is a prophet sent into their midst?

لو تنصف الأيامُ كنت محكّماً

لو تنصف الأيامُ كنت محكّماً

أقضي قضاء المستبدِّ وأفصل

أقضي قضاء المستبدِّ وأفصل

If the days dealt fairly, I would be made an arbiter,

judging as a despot judges and settling disputes.

يا ضيعة الشيم الحسان الغرِّ إن

يا ضيعة الشيم الحسان الغرِّ إن

لم يجمعنِّي والخليفةَ محفل

لم يجمعنِّي والخليفةَ محفل

What a waste of lovely, radiant virtues, if

no gathering brings me together with the caliph!

يرجو الفقير غنىً وينذر بذله

متجملاً فإذا اغتنى لا يبذل

متجملاً فإذا اغتنى لا يبذل

The poor man hopes for wealth and vows to give it away,

in a show of nobility; but once rich, he gives nothing.

لا يشعرن بفضيلة الإنفاق وال

لا يشعرن بفضيلة الإنفاق وال

إحسان إلا ذو العناء المرمل

إحسان إلا ذو العناء المرمل

None truly feels the virtue of giving and

benevolence except the destitute man who knows hardship.

إن الذي وهب البلاد دموعه

إن الذي وهب البلاد دموعه

ودماءه بنضاره لا يبخل

ودماءه بنضاره لا يبخل

Indeed, he who has given the country his tears

and his blood will not begrudge his gold.

إن ينسني الرفق الإخاء ففاقتي

إن ينسني الرفق الإخاء ففاقتي

أولى وإن أدمى يديَّ المعول

أولى وإن أدمى يديَّ المعول

If comfort makes me forget brotherhood, then my poverty

is preferable, even if the pickaxe bloodies my hands.

أبرأت في صدري جوى يتغلغل

أبرأت في صدري جوى يتغلغل

And even if I possessed Qarun's wealth, I would not

heal the anguish that spreads deep within my breast.

تعني فعلت لمصر ما لا يفعل

If I had the wealth of Rockefeller, whom

you mean, I would do for Egypt what he does not do.

وبنيتُ للسلطان خمسَ بوارجٍ

And I would build five battleships for the sultan,

aboard which the army would strut amid my bounty.

ونشرتُ ألوية البخار بملكه

يدنو به ناءٍ ويغلو مُهمَل

And I would unfurl the banners of steam throughout his realm;

through it the distant would draw near, and the neglected grow valuable.

ذاك الثرى الصادي ويعشب ممحل

ذاك الثرى الصادي ويعشب ممحل

And I would extend the Tigris and Euphrates so they might water

that thirsty soil, and barren ground would sprout grass.

وشريت في السودان أرضاً خصبة

وشريت في السودان أرضاً خصبة

أحيي بها المسترزقين وأشغل

أحيي بها المسترزقين وأشغل

And I would buy fertile land in Sudan,

with which I would sustain and employ those seeking a livelihood.

وأسابق الشركات في غاياتها

وأسابق الشركات في غاياتها

حتى يكون لي المقام الأول

حتى يكون لي المقام الأول

And I would race the companies toward their goals

until first place was mine.

ووهبت ألفاً كل فرد من ذوي

ووهبت ألفاً كل فرد من ذوي

قرباي تضمن لي رضاه وتكفل

قرباي تضمن لي رضاه وتكفل

And I would give a thousand to each member of

my kin, ensuring and guaranteeing his goodwill toward me.

وبنيت مستشفىً ومدرسة وبس

تاناً بقريتيَ التي هي أفضل

تاناً بقريتيَ التي هي أفضل

And I would build a hospital, a school, and

a garden in my village, which is the finest.

وضربت في الأرض العريضة جائباً

أقطارها مستعبراً أتأمل

أقطارها مستعبراً أتأمل

And I would journey through the wide earth, roaming

its regions, moved to tears as I ponder.

ورفعت لي قصراً على البوسفور كي

أصطاف فيه شاعراً أتغزل

أصطاف فيه شاعراً أتغزل

And I would raise a palace for myself on the Bosphorus, to

summer there as a poet, writing love verse.

وجعلت للشعراء رزقاً طيّباً

وجعلت للشعراء رزقاً طيّباً

يحمي أرقَّ الناس أن يتذللوا

يحمي أرقَّ الناس أن يتذللوا

And I would provide poets with a good livelihood

that protects the most sensitive of people from abasing themselves.

وجمعتهم لصحيفةٍ يوميةٍ

وجمعتهم لصحيفةٍ يوميةٍ

تروي الصحيح إلى العباد وتنقل

تروي الصحيح إلى العباد وتنقل

And I would gather them for a daily newspaper

that reports the truth to the people and conveys it.

وإذا أتى ذو كربة مستقرضاً

وإذا أتى ذو كربة مستقرضاً

أقرضته والحمد ربحي الأجزل

أقرضته والحمد ربحي الأجزل

And whenever someone in distress came seeking a loan,

I would lend to him, and praise would be my richest profit.

برٌّ كفى أجراً عليه أن أرى

برٌّ كفى أجراً عليه أن أرى

متنعماً مرحاً به يتمثل

متنعماً مرحاً به يتمثل

A kindness—reward enough for it is to see

someone enjoying comfort and joy, in whom it is embodied.

إن البلاد وأهلها بيدي إذا

إن البلاد وأهلها بيدي إذا

كانت يدي لبني بلادي تشمل

كانت يدي لبني بلادي تشمل

Indeed, the country and its people are in my hand, if

my hand embraces the sons of my country.
