إن الجواد الذي يعطي ويذكر ما
أعطىhe gave ليجعلso that he may make ذاthe one with الحاجاتthe needs يقصدُهُseek him
أعطى ليجعل ذا الحاجات يقصدُهُ
Indeed, the generous man who gives, then tells of what
Indeed, the generous man who gives and mentions what
he has given, so that the needy will seek him out,
he gave, to make the one in need seek him,
لكالمتيمindeed like the lovesick one يشكوlaments حبَّlove for فاتِنِهِhis charmer
لكالمتيم يشكو حبَّ فاتِنِهِ
إلىto العذولthe reproacher ليدنيهso that he may bring him near فيبعدُهُbut he drives him away
إلى العذول ليدنيه فيبعدُهُ
is like a lovesick man lamenting his love for his enchantress
is like the lovesick man lamenting his love for his charmer
to the censor, hoping to be drawn nearer—only to be driven away.
to the reproacher, hoping he will draw him near—but he drives him away.
