I was there on Wednesday evening,

and the family was gathered together;

we recalled a dead man claimed by

the ravages of the terrifying epidemic.

So at times we showed, out of

despair, the deepest anguish;

and at times we hoped for deliverance

through the most effective medicine.

وللجميع عمدة

على التقى والورع

على التقى والورع

And everyone relied

on piety and devoutness.

يرون خير عدة

يرون خير عدة

تطهير كل موضع

تطهير كل موضع

They deemed the best safeguard

to be disinfecting every place.

ثم تفرقنا ونم

ثم تفرقنا ونم

ت هادئاً في مضجعي

ت هادئاً في مضجعي

Then we parted, and I slept

peacefully in my bed.

فأزعجتني صيحةٌ

فأزعجتني صيحةٌ

كادت تصمُّ مسمعي

كادت تصمُّ مسمعي

Then a cry startled me,

nearly deafening my ear:

إن عزيزاً قد هوى

إن عزيزاً قد هوى

من حالق مرتفع

من حالق مرتفع

“Aziz has indeed fallen

from a towering height!”

فقمت كالملسوع لا

فقمت كالملسوع لا

صبري ولا عقلي معي

صبري ولا عقلي معي

So I sprang up as if stung; neither

my patience nor my reason was with me.

أرى النساء باكيا

أرى النساء باكيا

ت في أشد الهلع

ت في أشد الهلع

I see the women weeping,

in the deepest panic;

يَمُجْنَ في البيت كمو

يَمُجْنَ في البيت كمو

ج ذي عباب مترع

ج ذي عباب مترع

they surge about the house like a wave

with a brimming swell.

فضاق في وجه الفتى

فضاق في وجه الفتى

كل فضاء موسع

كل فضاء موسع

So, for the boy, it all grew cramped—

every wide-open space.

يبكي من الضجة وال

يبكي من الضجة وال

رَضِّ الشديد الموجع

رَضِّ الشديد الموجع

He weeps from the uproar and

the severe, painful bruising.

ثم دعوته فلم

ثم دعوته فلم

يشكُ أسىً ويضرع

يشكُ أسىً ويضرع

Then I called him, and he did not

complain of pain or plead;

وهبَّ يسعى ضاحكاً

وهبَّ يسعى ضاحكاً

كأنه لم يَقَع

كأنه لم يَقَع

and he sprang up, running and laughing,

as though he had not fallen.

فأعجب الناس به

فأعجب الناس به

وبأسه المستجمع

وبأسه المستجمع

So the people marveled at him

and at his fully mustered strength.

لم يترك الخطب سوى

لم يترك الخطب سوى

تذكاره المروِّع

تذكاره المروِّع

The calamity left nothing but

its terrifying memory,

وعبرة بمثلها

وعبرة بمثلها

في العام لم نقتنع

في العام لم نقتنع

and a lesson, the like of which

had not convinced us that year.

فيا عزيزُ اعتدْ لقا

فيا عزيزُ اعتدْ لقا

ءَ الهول واسعَ وارتع

ءَ الهول واسعَ وارتع

So, Aziz, grow used to facing

terror; go forth and enjoy yourself.

ومن تجاريب الشدا

ومن تجاريب الشدا

ئد استفد وانتفع

ئد استفد وانتفع

And from the trials of adversity

learn and benefit.

إن الذي نجى الفتى

إن الذي نجى الفتى

من شرِّ ذاك المصرع

من شرِّ ذاك المصرع

Indeed, the one who saved the boy

from the peril of that fall

أحيا وأبقى في الحيا

أحيا وأبقى في الحيا

ة أملي ومطمعي

ة أملي ومطمعي

has revived and sustained in life

my hope and my aspiration.
