إني لأسمعُ نذرَ الحرب داويةً

I truly hear the portents of war resounding

On land and sea, across the horizons and among the clouds.

وكلُّ مملكةٍ خصمٌ لمملكةٍ

وكلُّ مملكةٍ خصمٌ لمملكةٍ

بما تُعدُّ من الفولاذ واللهبِ

بما تُعدُّ من الفولاذ واللهبِ

And every kingdom is an adversary to another kingdom

With the steel and flame it prepares.

وأين عدتكم يا آل مصرَ لها

وأين عدتكم يا آل مصرَ لها

وأنتمُ هدفُ الغاراتِ والنوبِ

وأنتمُ هدفُ الغاراتِ والنوبِ

And where are your armaments for it, O people of Egypt,

While you are the target of raids and calamities?

لعلكم قد غنيتم عن كتائبها

لعلكم قد غنيتم عن كتائبها

بالكتب والخطب الجوفاء والصخب

بالكتب والخطب الجوفاء والصخب

Perhaps you have dispensed with its battalions

Through books, hollow speeches, and clamor.

ستصطلون لظاها مثل أمس وما

ستصطلون لظاها مثل أمس وما

أنتم لقوم بأعداء ولا صحب

أنتم لقوم بأعداء ولا صحب

You will burn in its blaze as you did yesterday, though

You are neither enemies nor friends to any people.

فهل تنامون حتى تُبعثوا فتروا

ذماركمُ في بقايا السبي والسلب

ذماركمُ في بقايا السبي والسلب

Will you sleep, then, until you are roused and see

All you must defend amid the remnants of captivity and plunder?

أطلتمُ بينكم خلفاً وتفرقةً

أطلتمُ بينكم خلفاً وتفرقةً

على المناصبِ والألقابِ والرتبِ

على المناصبِ والألقابِ والرتبِ

You have prolonged discord and division among yourselves

Over offices, titles, and ranks.

وراح كل فتى يُلقي بمبدئه

وراح كل فتى يُلقي بمبدئه

كتاجر السوق بين العرض والطلب

كتاجر السوق بين العرض والطلب

And every young man began offering up his principle,

Like a market trader amid supply and demand.

وأصبح اليوم إحساناً ومكرمة

وأصبح اليوم إحساناً ومكرمة

ما كان أمس مكان الغيظ والغضب

ما كان أمس مكان الغيظ والغضب

And today it has become a kindness and a noble deed—

What yesterday was a source of rage and anger.

فما أفرِّقُ بين الجدِّ واللعب

فما أفرِّقُ بين الجدِّ واللعب

There is contradiction and confusion in your inclinations;

So I cannot tell earnestness from play.

ليت المعدَّ صواباً بعده خطأ

أخلى الطريق فلم يخطىء ولم يصب

أخلى الطريق فلم يخطىء ولم يصب

Would that he who plans a right course followed by error

Had cleared the way, neither erring nor hitting the mark.

تشكونَ من أزمات المالِ كربتكم

تشكونَ من أزمات المالِ كربتكم

والملك من أزمة الأخلاقِ في كربِ

والملك من أزمة الأخلاقِ في كربِ

You lament the distress financial crises bring you,

While the realm is in distress from a crisis of morals.

ومن يَزِد دَيْنُه عمَّا بحوزته

ومن يَزِد دَيْنُه عمَّا بحوزته

فدفعه ورقاً كالدفع بالذهب

فدفعه ورقاً كالدفع بالذهب

And whoever's debt exceeds what he possesses,

His payment in paper is like payment in gold.

فكوا السلاسل والأغلال والتمسوا

فكوا السلاسل والأغلال والتمسوا

بعد النجاة مثال الترك والعرب

بعد النجاة مثال الترك والعرب

Break the chains and shackles, and seek,

After deliverance, the example of the Turks and Arabs.

إن الغريم بما أخفاه صَارَحكُم

إن الغريم بما أخفاه صَارَحكُم

وسار من أربٍ فيكم إلى أرب

وسار من أربٍ فيكم إلى أرب

Indeed, the adversary has told you plainly what he concealed,

And moved from one aim concerning you to another.

ولم يجئ بجديد في سياسته

ولم يجئ بجديد في سياسته

غير الوسيلة والمعيار والسبب

غير الوسيلة والمعيار والسبب

Nor has he brought anything new to his policy

Except the means, the standard, and the reason.

وما تعوَّد أن يخشى لغايته

وما تعوَّد أن يخشى لغايته

ما كان من تهم فيها ومن ريب

ما كان من تهم فيها ومن ريب

And in pursuing his aim, he is not given to fearing

Whatever accusations and doubts there may be about it.

حذرْتكم وأبيتم أن أحذِّركم

حذرْتكم وأبيتم أن أحذِّركم

فكان ما خِفْتُ من عُقبى ومنقلب

فكان ما خِفْتُ من عُقبى ومنقلب

I warned you, and you refused to let me warn you;

So the aftermath and outcome I feared came to pass.

إني لأفزعُ من قتل النزيل بكم

إني لأفزعُ من قتل النزيل بكم

لعله يتحاماكم ويفتك بي

لعله يتحاماكم ويفتك بي

I truly fear being killed by the guest lodged among you;

Perhaps he will keep clear of you and strike me dead.

عسى يُذكِّر بالحر الشهيد دمي

عسى يُذكِّر بالحر الشهيد دمي

من فاته الذكرُ من شعري ومن أدبي

من فاته الذكرُ من شعري ومن أدبي

May my blood bring the free martyr to mind
