Gone is the last of the generation that paved the paths
to glory for the generation that will follow it.
أبوكyour father أبوthe father of الأحرارfree men فيin الأرضthe earth كلهاall of it
فخطبهمُso their calamity فيهover him كخطبكlike your calamity فيهover him
Your father was the father of free men throughout the earth;
so their loss in him is like your own.
وإنand indeed الذيhe who أعطىgave بنيهhis sons خلالهhis virtues
لباقsurely enduring علىin الدنياthis world بقاءfor the lifetime of بنيهhis sons
And he who has passed his virtues on to his sons
surely lives on in this world as long as his sons live.
وإنand though لمnot نجدwe find عنهfrom him منamong الأمرaffairs شاغلاًa distraction
ففيكso in you الغنىsufficiency عنهwithout him لمفتقديهfor those who miss him
And though we find no concern to distract us from him,
in you those who miss him find all they need in his stead.
وقدand indeed كانit was أولىmore fitting أنthat يعيشhe live إلىuntil المدىthe span of time
ترىyou see فيهwithin it ماwhat أمّلتهyou hoped for it وتريهand you show him
And it would have been more fitting for him to live until the time
when you could see what you had hoped for and show it to him.
