O man of vast influence, a greeting—

if a poet who greets you could stir your sympathy.

أهلاً بصارمك الطويل ومرحباً

إن لم تضعه في مكان نداكا

Welcome to your long, keen sword, and welcome,

provided you do not put it in place of your generosity.

في مصر شعب لا يضام ومالكٌ

متفرد لا يقبل الإشراكا

In Egypt are a people who will not be wronged, and a sovereign

without peer, who accepts no partner.

تلقاك صافية السماء وديعة

ما للبريء الحر أن يخشاك

She greets you, gentle and clear-skied;

why should the free and innocent fear you?

ما أنت حابس نيلها يوماً ولا

أهرامها مهدومة بقواكا

أهرامها مهدومة بقواكا

You will never hold back her Nile, nor

will her pyramids be razed by your might.

اللّه أكبر من جيوشك سطوة

اللّه أكبر من جيوشك سطوة

والدهر أبعد من مدى مرماكا

والدهر أبعد من مدى مرماكا

God is mightier than your armies,

and time stretches beyond the reach of your aim.

ولأنت أعلى همة وشمائلاً

ولأنت أعلى همة وشمائلاً

من أن تَمُدَّ لآمنين شباكا

من أن تَمُدَّ لآمنين شباكا

And surely you are loftier in resolve and character

than to spread nets for those living in safety.

وأبر من أن تلتوي حقداً على

وأبر من أن تلتوي حقداً على

أسرى هنا يتلمسون فكاكا

أسرى هنا يتلمسون فكاكا

And too righteous to turn with hatred upon

captives here groping for release.

هل يذنب الجرحى إذا هم حاولوا

دون الضواري صيحة وحراكا

دون الضواري صيحة وحراكا

Do the wounded do wrong if they attempt

a cry and a stir in the face of beasts of prey?

هل كان للألمان فيهم مأرب

يوماً إذا ما جاملوا الأتراكا

يوماً إذا ما جاملوا الأتراكا

Did the Germans have any interest in them

ever, when they showed courtesy to the Turks?

ما كان بغياً حبهم ولو اَنَّه

أعيا وأشقى اللائم الأفاكا

أعيا وأشقى اللائم الأفاكا

Love for them was no wrongdoing, even if it

wearied and tormented the lying faultfinder.

لسنا قطيعاً غاب راعيه كما

كنا ولست الضيغم الفتاكا

كنا ولست الضيغم الفتاكا

We are not a flock whose shepherd is absent, as

we once were; nor are you the deadly lion.

يأبى عليك وقد بلوت نفوسنا

ماضي احتراسك أن نكون عداكا

Having tested our souls, you are forbidden

by your past caution to let us be your foes.

ضمنت تجاربك التي أحسنتها

في مصر أن تعصي الذي أغراكا

Your experiences, which you handled well, have ensured

in Egypt that you will disobey the one who enticed you.

إن كنت طلق الوجه أو متجهماً

فاللّه يعلم منتهى نجواكا

فاللّه يعلم منتهى نجواكا

Whether you are cheerful-faced or scowling,

God knows the full extent of your secret counsel.

ولعل شأنك في مشيبك غير ما

ولعل شأنك في مشيبك غير ما

أسلفته في عنفوان صباكا

أسلفته في عنفوان صباكا

And perhaps your conduct in your gray-haired years differs from what

you did before in the prime of your youth.

فليهدأ المتطيّرون هنا وإن

فليهدأ المتطيّرون هنا وإن

قصفت رعود المرجفين هناكا

قصفت رعود المرجفين هناكا

So let those fearing ill omens here be calm, even if

the alarmists’ thunderclaps crash over there.

ضجّوا وعادوا ينصتون وربما

ضجّوا وعادوا ينصتون وربما

سبقت يمينك بالعظائم فاكا

سبقت يمينك بالعظائم فاكا

They clamored, then returned to listening; and perhaps

your right hand has outrun your mouth with mighty deeds.

لك ما تشاء من البلاد سوى الذي

لك ما تشاء من البلاد سوى الذي

لا يدَّعي فيها الذي ولاكا

لا يدَّعي فيها الذي ولاكا

You may have all you wish of the lands, except what

the one who appointed you does not claim there.

وإذا عنيت بكل مقضيٍّ فمن

وإذا عنيت بكل مقضيٍّ فمن

أولى بإنجاز الوعود سواكا

أولى بإنجاز الوعود سواكا

And if you attend to all that has been decreed, who

is better suited than you to fulfill the promises?

ميثاق دولتك الكبيرة خير ما

ميثاق دولتك الكبيرة خير ما

ترعاه لو عدل الذي استرعاك

ترعاه لو عدل الذي استرعاك

Your great state's covenant is the best thing

for you to uphold, if the one who entrusted you with its care acted justly.

يا فاتح الخرطوم بالجند الذي

أمسى فدى أسلابها وفداكا

أمسى فدى أسلابها وفداكا

O conqueror of Khartoum, with the army that

became a sacrifice for her spoils and for you,

أذكر صنائعه التي دبَّرتها

أذكر صنائعه التي دبَّرتها

حتى بلغت بها رفيع علاكا

حتى بلغت بها رفيع علاكا

remember its feats, which you directed,

until through them you reached your lofty eminence.

ومحامل الأبطال بعد قتالهم

ومحامل الأبطال بعد قتالهم

إنا لأقربهم إلى رحماكا

إنا لأقربهم إلى رحماكا

And the burdens of heroes after their fighting—

we are surely the nearest of them to your mercy.

إن الطهور بنانه أولى بما

إن الطهور بنانه أولى بما

نوَّلت ذاك الأغلب السفّاكا

نوَّلت ذاك الأغلب السفّاكا

Surely he whose fingers are pure is worthier of what

you bestowed on that mighty slaughterer.

فأقم بمصر مقام ضيف محسن

فأقم بمصر مقام ضيف محسن

وعليهمُ أن يكرموا مثواكا

وعليهمُ أن يكرموا مثواكا

So stay in Egypt as a beneficent guest,

and they must honor your stay.

واذكر لوادي النيل نعمته عسى

واذكر لوادي النيل نعمته عسى

تعطي بنيه بعض ما أعطاكا

تعطي بنيه بعض ما أعطاكا

And remember the Nile Valley's bounty; perhaps

you will give its sons some of what it gave you.

فإذا تجاوزت الكنانة فافتتح

فإذا تجاوزت الكنانة فافتتح

ما شاء عزمك واصعد الأفلاكا

ما شاء عزمك واصعد الأفلاكا

Then, when you pass beyond Egypt—the Quiver—conquer

whatever your resolve wills, and ascend the celestial spheres.

في غير مصر ذرائع ومواقع

في غير مصر ذرائع ومواقع

للمستزيد مطامعاً وعراكا

للمستزيد مطامعاً وعراكا

Outside Egypt are pretexts and battlefields

for one seeking more ambition and combat.

ولئن غضبت على الأباة فصبرهم

ولئن غضبت على الأباة فصبرهم

أولى وأجمل من رجاء رضاكا

أولى وأجمل من رجاء رضاكا

And even if you are angry with the unbowed, their endurance

is worthier and nobler than hoping for your favor.

فاعرف لهم عذر الحريص إذا همُ

فاعرف لهم عذر الحريص إذا همُ

لم يسلموا لك ما تنال يداكا

لم يسلموا لك ما تنال يداكا

So acknowledge their excuse as that of the careful man, if they

have not surrendered to you what your hands can reach.
