O minister of Egypt, repeat it—the truest of speeches—

and expound your declaration, free in striving and pursuit.

وأسمع القوم عن مرماك ما ألفوا

أن يسمعوا عن مرامي القادة النجب

أن يسمعوا عن مرامي القادة النجب

And let the people hear of your aim what they are accustomed

to hearing of the aims of noble leaders.

عرفت كل خفيٍّ من سياستهم

عرفت كل خفيٍّ من سياستهم

وقد ملكت إليهم قوة السبب

وقد ملكت إليهم قوة السبب

You have learned every hidden aspect of their policy,

and have gained a strong bond with them.

أعيا جبابرةَ الدنيا مراسُهُمُ

أعيا جبابرةَ الدنيا مراسُهُمُ

فجئتهم من طريق العلم والأدب

فجئتهم من طريق العلم والأدب

Contending with them exhausted the world's tyrants,

so you came to them by the path of learning and culture.

ترضيهم بعد ما أرضوك واحترموا

ترضيهم بعد ما أرضوك واحترموا

جميع حقك فيما كان من غضب

جميع حقك فيما كان من غضب

You satisfy them after they satisfied you and respected

all your rights amid the anger that arose.

تريد بالعهد منهم والوفاء لهم

تريد بالعهد منهم والوفاء لهم

عهد البلاد على الأقدار والحقب

عهد البلاد على الأقدار والحقب

Through their covenant and your fidelity to them, you seek

a covenant for the country through fates and ages.

ولم تدع لهمُ ما ساء من شُبَهٍ

ولم تدع لهمُ ما ساء من شُبَهٍ

ولم تدع لهمُ ما ضرَّ من ريب

ولم تدع لهمُ ما ضرَّ من ريب

And you left them no troubling suspicions,

and left them no harmful doubts.

وما تجاوز في الوادي نصيبُهُمُ

وما تجاوز في الوادي نصيبُهُمُ

من الوداد نصيب الترك والعرب

من الوداد نصيب الترك والعرب

And their share in the valley did not exceed—

in affection—the share of the Turks and Arabs.

والناس عندك أشباه إذا ائتلفتْ

والناس عندك أشباه إذا ائتلفتْ

أهواؤهم في حماك الطيب الرحب

أهواؤهم في حماك الطيب الرحب

And people are alike in your eyes whenever there is harmony

among their desires within your pleasant, spacious sanctuary.

وإن يكن فيه تمهيد لمكتسب

وإن يكن فيه تمهيد لمكتسب

فإنه غير تمهيد لمغتصب

فإنه غير تمهيد لمغتصب

And if within it the way is paved for one seeking gain,

that is no paving of the way for a usurper.

فيه المطار لجوَّابٍ ومتَّجرٍ

فيه المطار لجوَّابٍ ومتَّجرٍ

لا للمدجج يرمي الأرض باللهب

لا للمدجج يرمي الأرض باللهب

Within it is an airfield for a traveler and a merchant,

not for the heavily armed, hurling flame upon the earth.

مرافق الناس بين الناس جامعةٌ

مرافق الناس بين الناس جامعةٌ

قبل العلائق من قربى ومن نسب

قبل العلائق من قربى ومن نسب

People's interests bind people together,

before ties of kinship and lineage.

يا صاحب الطيبات المستحق بها

يا صاحب الطيبات المستحق بها

كل الرياسات والألقاب والرتب

كل الرياسات والألقاب والرتب

O possessor of virtues, who through them deserves

all positions of leadership, titles, and ranks,

وواهب الراحة الكبرى لأمته

وواهب الراحة الكبرى لأمته

وإن تحمَّل كل الهم والتعب

وإن تحمَّل كل الهم والتعب

and giver of the greatest ease to his nation,

even though he bears all the worry and toil,

وجامع الشعب في حزب أقام به

وجامع الشعب في حزب أقام به

على السلام دليل الدائب الدرب

على السلام دليل الدائب الدرب

and uniter of the people in a party, through which he established

a tireless, seasoned man's proof of peace,

وموفد الحر يدعو كل مملكة

وموفد الحر يدعو كل مملكة

بما تخيَّر من عقبى ومنقلب

بما تخيَّر من عقبى ومنقلب

and sender of the free man, who calls upon every kingdom

with the outcome and destination he has chosen,

مكرماً أينما كانت سفارته

مكرماً أينما كانت سفارته

وأي تكرمة ترضيك لم تجب

وأي تكرمة ترضيك لم تجب

honored wherever his diplomatic mission may be;

and what honor pleasing you has not been granted?

ليطمئن إليه كلُّ معتركٍ

ليطمئن إليه كلُّ معتركٍ

ويستقر عليه كلُّ مضطرب

ويستقر عليه كلُّ مضطرب

so every arena of conflict may find reassurance in him,

and every troubled place may find stability through him.

وليس غير الذي ترضى بمنتظرٍ

وليس غير الذي ترضى بمنتظرٍ

وليس غير الذي ترجو بمرتقب

وليس غير الذي ترجو بمرتقب

And nothing other than what you approve is awaited,

and nothing other than what you hope for is anticipated.

أرى أعادي ما أحسنته انصرفوا

أرى أعادي ما أحسنته انصرفوا

إلى الولائم والألحان والطرب

إلى الولائم والألحان والطرب

I see the foes of your good work have turned

to banquets, melodies, and merriment.

إن الألى أخطأوا في الجد موقفهم

إن الألى أخطأوا في الجد موقفهم

أحق بالعيش في لهو وفي لعب

أحق بالعيش في لهو وفي لعب

Indeed, those who took the wrong stand in serious affairs

are better suited to a life of diversion and play.

لعلهم بعد ما كذبتهم يئسوا

لعلهم بعد ما كذبتهم يئسوا

من أن يجيئوك يوماً بالدم الكذب

من أن يجيئوك يوماً بالدم الكذب

Perhaps, after you proved them false, they have despaired

of one day coming to you with false blood.

شكَوا قوانينَك المثلى وما ذكروا

شكَوا قوانينَك المثلى وما ذكروا

شكواك من شغب يدوي ومن صخب

شكواك من شغب يدوي ومن صخب

They complained of your exemplary laws, yet never mentioned

your complaint of resounding disorder and of clamor.

كم أكرهوك وتأبى أن تعاملهم

كم أكرهوك وتأبى أن تعاملهم

إلا معاملة الإخوان والصحب

إلا معاملة الإخوان والصحب

How often they coerced you, yet you refuse to treat them

otherwise than as brothers and companions.

إذا قدرت على الأخلاق تصلحها

إذا قدرت على الأخلاق تصلحها

فقد قدرت على الأهوال والنوب

فقد قدرت على الأهوال والنوب

If you have power over character, reforming it,

then you have power over terrors and calamities.
