شراً يرى الناس أم خيراً يلاقونا

وغافلون همُ أم مستفيقونا

Do people see evil, or do they encounter good?

And are they heedless, or awake?

أمضى على الصلح قوم يعبثون به

وقد نأى عنه قوم غير ممضينا

Some signed the peace, yet toy with it,

while others withdrew without signing.

تنفس الصعداء اليوم بعضهمُ

ولم يزل بعضهم أسوان محزونا

Some of them breathed a sigh of relief today,

while others remain sorrowful and grieving.

هل يعرف الدهر حرباً كالتي شملت

تلك الثمانيَ يتلوها ثمانونا

Has time known a war like the one that engulfed

those eight, with eighty following them?

صناعة هي يعتز الملوك بها

على العباد الأذلاء المطيعينا

Is it a craft by which kings vaunt themselves

over their humbled, obedient subjects?

أم كانت المرض الموروث في دول

أعيت طبائعها السودُ المداوينا

Or was it the inherited disease of states

whose dark natures defeated the healers?

ما كان أكبر آثام الأنام وما

أزكى وأغلى الضحايا والقرابينا

How great were humankind's sins, and how

pure and precious the victims and sacrificial offerings!

أين الأسرة والتيجان أسألها

عن الملوك الطغاة المستبدينا

Where are the thrones and crowns? I ask them

about the tyrannical, despotic kings,

الرافعين على الأشلاء دورهم

المالئين دماً تلك الميادينا

who raised their houses upon dismembered bodies,

who filled those battlefields with blood.

جنت على ملكهم أسلاب غيرهم

فهل تذكر هذا المستغلونا

The spoils of others brought ruin upon their rule;

do the exploiters remember this?

أمستغيثين من حرب نفرُّ إلى

سلم يزيد هموم المستغيثينا

Seeking deliverance from war, do we flee to

a peace that increases the supplicants' troubles?

ففي اليمين عهود الصلح خادعة

وفي اليسار قيود المسترقينا

For in the right hand are deceitful peace covenants,

and in the left are the enslavers' fetters.

أين الشروط وأين العاملون بها

أم تلك كانت أباطيل المضلينا

Where are the terms, and where are those who act upon them?

Or were those the deceivers' falsehoods?

أهذه ثمرات النصر يخرجها

للعاملين الألبّاء البصيرونا

Are these the fruits of victory, brought forth

for discerning workers by the clear-sighted?

لا غالب اليوم إلا من يعين غداً

ببأسه ونداه المستجيرينا

There is no victor today except one who tomorrow helps

those seeking refuge, with his might and generosity.

دانت لعسكر ولسون جبابرة

وأين ما صنعت آراء ولسونا

Tyrants submitted to Wilson's army;

but where are the fruits of Wilson's ideas?

أغرى البرية باستقلالهم ونأى

عنهم وهُم بالذي أغرى يهيمونا

He enticed humankind with their independence, then withdrew

from them, while they remained enraptured by his enticement.

أيبتغي رجل الدنيا الجديدة ما

لم يرج من قدم الدنيا النبيّونا

Does the man of the New World seek what

the prophets never hoped for since the world's earliest days?

وتبدل الأرض غير الأرض متخذاً

ملائكاً برة هذي الشياطينا

And would the earth become another earth, turning

these devils into righteous angels?

هواجسٌ ملأ المستبشرون بها

نفوسهم وتعداها الخليونا

Fancies with which the hopeful filled

their souls, while the carefree passed them by.

والحق في كل عصر فاقد سنداً

إن لم يجد طلباً بالبأس مقرونا

In every age, right lacks support

unless it finds a demand backed by force.

فذو السلاح هو المرهوب جانبه

إذا انثنى الأعزل المغلوب مغبونا

For the armed man is the one whose power is feared,

while the unarmed and vanquished turns back, cheated.

تغير الناس أخلاقاً ومتجهاً

تغير الأرض تكويناً وتلوينا

People change in character and direction,

as the earth changes in structure and color.

صوت القنا والسيوف اليوم يخلفها

صوت العواطف توفيقاً وتأمينا

The voice of spears and swords is now succeeded

by the voice of feeling, bringing concord and security.

وللشعوب وقد زالت ضغائنها

فتح المبادئِ لا فتح المغيرينا

For the peoples, now that their grudges have vanished,

there is victory through principles, not through raiders.

عقبى الهزائم بل عقبى المغارم ما

يغدو به ويروح البلشفيونا

The outcome of defeats—indeed, of heavy losses—is what

the Bolsheviks carry about morning and evening.

تجشّموا في البلاد الظلم وانطلقوا

بعد المظالم أحراراً مغالينا

They endured oppression in the land, then emerged

after those wrongs, free but going to extremes.

وما رضوا أن يكونوا بعد قيصرهم

إلا قياصر فيها أو فراعينا

They would not accept, after their tsar,

being anything but tsars there, or pharaohs.

للقوم أعذارهم في كل منقلب

إن أخطأ القوم أو كانوا مصيبينا

The people have their excuses at every turn,

whether they have erred or been right.

ولست أعلم والإنسان متهمٌ

أمصلحون هم أم مستفيدونا

I do not know—human beings are suspect—

whether they are reformers or self-seekers.

نعم الفريق الذي فوضاه هادمة

بغيَ الفريق الذي سن القوانينا

How excellent the faction whose anarchy destroys

the tyranny of the faction that laid down the laws!

جنّت بحرية الدنيا العقول فما

أذكى الجنون وما أوفى المجانينا

Minds have gone mad for the world's freedom; how

brilliant the madness, and how faithful the madmen!

للإشتراكية العقبى إذا شملت

شتى الشعوب وجاراها المجارونا

Socialism will have the final triumph if it embraces

the diverse peoples, and its followers keep pace with it.

فلا الكثيرون ملكٌ للأقلِّينا

ولا الأقلون ملك للكثيرينا

Then the many will not be the property of the few,

nor the few the property of the many.

ولا نرى واحداً ملأى خزائنه

بالمغنيات وآلافاً يجوعونا

Nor shall we see one man with coffers full

of riches, while thousands go hungry.

ولا نرى درة في رأس محتكم

تهفو إليها قلوب المستظلينا

Nor shall we see a pearl upon a ruler's head

toward which the hearts of those beneath his protection yearn.

يا نائلين من الحرب العوان سوى

ما كان منتظراً منها ومظنونا

O you who gained from the raging war something other than

what had been expected and presumed of it,

نجوتمُ من رزاياها وما لكمُ

لا تذكرون رفاقاً غير ناجينا

you escaped its calamities; why is it that you

do not remember comrades who did not escape?

مدوا الحديد لكم في كل مرحلة

وذلّلوا لكمُ أطوادها لينا

They laid rails for you along every stage,

and subdued its towering mountains, making them yield to you.

ورابطوا لأعاديكم على هدف

وألحقوا النيل بالأردنَّ تأمينا

They kept watch against your enemies in an exposed position,

and linked the Nile to the Jordan for security.

وقلتم الترك قد جاءوا لغزوكمُ

وقهركم فرددناهم مولّينا

You said, 'The Turks have come to invade you

and subdue you'; so we drove them back in retreat.

وكم عتبنا على قوم لأجلكمُ

وهم إلينا الأحباء المحبونا

How often we reproached a people for your sake,

though they were beloved by us and loved us!

وقلتمُ لم ينل قوم بغير دم

حرية فبذلناه مضحينا

You said, 'No people have gained, without blood,

freedom'; so we shed it, making sacrifices.

ونال من دمنا في مصر جندُكمُ

ما نال منه عداكم في فلسطينا

Your soldiers took of our blood in Egypt

what your enemies took of it in Palestine.

فهل غسلتم خطايا الأبرياء به

أم لا تزال خطيئات البريئينا

Did you thereby wash away the innocent's sins,

or are the sins of the blameless never erased?

أتستهينون بالإنسان ماثلكم

وتؤثرون عليه الماء والطينا

Do you scorn the human being who is your equal,

and prefer water and clay to him?

هبوا حمى مصر والسودان مزرعة

أيرهق الأجراءَ المستغلونا

Suppose the land of Egypt and Sudan is a farm:

should the exploiters overburden the hired hands?

ورثتم خصمكم ميتاً وصاحبكم

حياً وما زلتمُ في الأرض تسعونا

You inherited your enemy dead, and your friend

alive, yet you still range across the earth.

وقد ملكتم من العمران ناضره

ورحبه وبذي الشكوى تضيقونا

You have possessed civilization's flourishing part

and its breadth, yet chafe at anyone who complains.

هل تنكرون عليهم في زمانكمُ

ما أدركوه تجاريباً وتمدينا

Do you deny them, in your own time,

what they have attained in experience and civilization?

جربتمُ مصر في تقييدها زمناً

فجربوا مصر في إطلاقها حينا

You have tried Egypt in chains for a time;

now try Egypt at liberty for a while.

أمنتمُ مصر فيما نال أمنكمُ

فأي شيء على مصرٍ تخافونا

You trusted Egypt in matters touching your security;

so what is it you fear for Egypt?

وقلتمُ مصر للهند السبيل فإن

ضاع السبيل أضعنا الهند ساهينا

You said, 'Egypt is the road to India; if

the road is lost, we lose India through neglect.'

أما إلى الهند إلا مصر من سبلٍ

ملأى شواهين أو ملأى سراحينا

Are there no roads to India but Egypt,

full of falcons or full of wolves?

يهدد الهند أهلوه وجيرته

ولا يزال سبيل الهند مأمونا

India is threatened by its own people and neighbors,

while the road to India remains secure.

خافوا سوانا وأعطونا أمانِينا

فما تضرُّ بكم يوماً أمانينا

Fear others, not us, and grant us our wishes;

our wishes will never harm you.

نلقاكمُ بقلوب المخلصين كما

تلقوننا بقلوب المطمئنينا

We meet you with sincere hearts, just as

you meet us with reassured hearts.

مصالح الناس أقوى من عواطفهم

يداً فهم أينما سارت يسيرونا

People's interests are stronger than their feelings

in sway: wherever interests go, people follow.

فلا تدوم حزازات المعادينا

ولا تدوم مودات الموالينا

The resentments of enemies do not endure,

nor do the affections of allies endure.

وطالما عاد خصمُ القوم صاحبَهم

وطالما أحسن العقبى المسيئونا

How often a people's enemy has become their friend,

and how often wrongdoers have done good in the end!

عسى الذي منح الألمان سلمَكمُ

ينسيكم أثر الماضي وينسينا

May He who granted the Germans your peace

make you forget the traces of the past, and make us forget.

عسى مبدل بأسَ الروم مرحمةً

للترك يرضيكم عنا ويرضينا

May He who turns the Greeks' might into mercy

for the Turks reconcile you to us, and satisfy us.

وإن شبراً لِذي حقٍّ لأفضلُ من

مقاطعات البغاة المستبيحينا

A span of land held by its rightful owner is surely better than

provinces held by aggressors who violate all bounds.

وإن فرداً لذي ملكٍ يبر به

خير له من جماعات يثورونا

And one man loyal to a sovereign

is better for him than crowds who revolt.

عن أي شيء لمصرٍ تسألون وقد

هزت مسائل مصر الهند والصينا

What do you ask about Egypt, when

Egypt's affairs have shaken India and China?

بالسيف والنار يدعو الناس جندكم

وتطلبون من الصرعى مجيبينا

Your troops summon people with sword and fire,

and you seek respondents from among the slain.

ضعوا السلاسل عنا واطلبوا جدلاً

تروا أدلة مصرٍ والبراهينا

Take the chains off us and seek debate;

you will see Egypt's arguments and proofs.

وربما قبلت دعواكمُ دولٌ

وأهل مصرٍ أباة غير راضينا

Some states may accept your claim,

but Egypt's people are unyielding and do not consent.

ليت الذي حرم الألمان غايتهم

أخاف قوماً سواهم لا يبالونا

Would that He who deprived the Germans of their goal

frightened other people who do not care!

وليت من زاد قوماً قوة وغنى

يرعى ويحرس أقواماً مساكينا

And would that He who increased a people's strength and wealth

tended and guarded destitute peoples!

أتسفكون لمظلوم دماءكمُ

وبالكلام على عانٍ تضنّونا

Do you shed your blood for someone wronged,

yet begrudge even words on behalf of a captive?

وهل وفيتم بميثاق لمصرَ كما

رعيتمُ العهد للبلجيك موفينا

Have you fulfilled a covenant for Egypt, as

you faithfully kept your pledge to the Belgians?

كم أعجبتكم من الأحرار عزتهم

كانوا موالين أو كانوا معادينا

How often the pride of free people has impressed you,

whether they were allies or enemies!

فهل ذكرتم وأكبرتم لنا غرضاً

كما ذكرتم وأكبرتم وشنطونا

Have you remembered and honored an aim of ours,

as you remembered and honored Washington?

كم أنجب البطل الأحداث عالية

وأنجب الحدث الأبطال عالينا

How often a hero has given rise to great events,

and an event has brought forth exalted heroes!

كنا أمانة دهرٍ عندكم وأتى

وقت الأداء فهل أنتم مؤدونا

We were a trust of time in your keeping, and now

the time for fulfillment has come: will you fulfill it?

وقد أقر لمصرٍ كل منتصف

بحق مصر فهل أنتم مقرونا

Every fair-minded person has acknowledged

Egypt's right; will you acknowledge it?

وقد أصرت على استقلالها فعلى

أيّ المآرب أصبحتم مصرينا

Egypt has insisted upon her independence; upon

what aims have you come to insist?

أواهبون لمصرٍ كل ما طلبت

أم آخذون بمقدار ومعطونا

Will you grant Egypt everything she has requested,

or will you take a share and give?

وإن رفعتم عن الوادي حمايتكم

فما اسم لاحقها فيما تسمونا

If you lift your protection from the Valley,

what name will you give its successor?

وإن تروا بدلاً منها محالفة

فمن لنا بضمانات المساوينا

And if you propose an alliance in its place,

who will assure us the guarantees of equals?

إنا لنعجز عن حق الحليف وعن

حق الشريك وأنتم تستزيدونا

We cannot bear the obligations of an ally, nor

those of a partner, while you keep demanding more.

وما مجاورة الأقوى وشركته

إلا كما جاور العصفور شاهينا

To neighbor and partner the stronger

is like a sparrow living beside a falcon.

ادعوا بني مصر أنداداً لكم ودعوا

ولاة مصر ملوكاً أو سلاطينا

Call Egypt's sons your equals, and leave

Egypt's rulers as kings or sultans.

وغادروها لأكفاءٍ تجاربُهم

تغنيهمُ عن تكاليف المشيرينا

Leave her to capable men whose experience

spares them the burdens of advisers.

يفدون مصر وإن شاكت منابتها

وإن جرى نيلها مُهلاً وغسلينا

They would ransom Egypt, even if her soil grew thorns,

even if her Nile ran with molten metal and filthy discharge,

وإن تدفق في البيداء منصرفاً

وإن أقام وراء السد مخزونا

even if it poured away into the desert,

or remained stored behind the dam.

أحرار مصر تباريهم حرائرها

ففاديات كما نرجو وفادينا

Egypt's free men are rivaled by her free women:

women who sacrifice themselves, as we hope, and men who do likewise;

مصليات يجارين المصلينا

مزكيات يجارين المزكينا

women at prayer matching the men at prayer,

women giving alms matching the men who give alms.

وهل رأت مصر قبل اليوم دعوتها

تثير للنجدات الخرَّدَ العينا

Has Egypt ever before today seen her call

rouse shy, wide-eyed maidens to acts of rescue?

خضن السعير إلى الشأو الخطير وما

حملن إلا التحايا والرياحينا

They plunged into the blaze toward the perilous goal, and

carried nothing but greetings and fragrant blossoms.

وكلما راعت الأهرام مرعدة

أرحن ما ارتاعها شدواً وتلحينا

Whenever a thunderclap terrified the Pyramids,

they quieted what frightened them with song and melody.

هذي مظاهر إيمان النفوس وذا

حق الجهاد وهذي روحه فينا

These are signs of the souls' faith, and this

is true striving, and this is its spirit within us.

أمستعدون للتوفيق بينكم

وبيننا اليوم إنا مستعدونا

Are you ready for reconciliation between you

and us today? We are ready.

تعطوننا مثل ما تعطون أنفسكم

فتستريحون منا أو تريحونا

Grant us the same as you grant yourselves;

then gain relief from us, or give us relief.

موكولة لسجايانا علائقنا

وما مرافقنا إلا بأيدينا

Our relations are entrusted to our own character,

and our affairs lie only in our own hands.

نودكم أمة في الأرض طيبة

ولا نود المعزّين المذلينا

We love you as a kindly nation on earth,

but we do not love those who exalt and abase.

أولى لكم ولكل الناس أنكمُ

كما نكون على الحسنى تكونونا

It is better for you and for all people that you

stand, as we do, upon goodwill.

يا جامعين وراء البحر أمرهمُ

ورائحين بنجوى مصر غادينا

O you who gather your cause beyond the sea,

and go forth morning and evening with Egypt's confidential plea,

باقون أنتم على العهد الوثيق كما

أنَّا على العهد والميثاق باقونا

you remain faithful to the firm pledge, just as

we remain faithful to the pledge and covenant.

سافرتمُ وقلوب المخلصين لكم

وبالرجاء إلى الوادي تعودونا

You traveled with the hearts of the faithful on your side,

and you return to the Valley in hope.

الحق في كل واد واجد سنداً

أضحى بلندن أو أمسى ببرلينا

Right finds support in every valley,

whether it spends the day in London or the evening in Berlin.

وحبذا سعيكم في كل مملكة

وحبذا أهل مصر المستقلونا

How fine your striving in every kingdom,

and how fine Egypt's independent people!

من لم ير اليوم في العمران موضعه

لم يلق في غده دنيا ولا دينا

Whoever fails today to see his place in civilization

will find in his tomorrow neither worldly life nor faith.

ونحن أولى بأن ترعى مواطننا

نوفي المكاييل فيها والموازينا

We are more entitled to have our homelands cared for;

we give full measure and weight in them.
