Enough anger, O Orzayl, and cruelty
Enough, O Orzil, of anger and cruelty
toward a lover whose heart has melted with passion.
toward a lover whose ribs have melted with longing.
فماfor no راسفٌa shackled captive فيin قيدهhis fetter شُدَّwas bound عنقُهُhis neck
لسيفِfor the sword of ظلومٍa cruel oppressor كلماwhenever استعطفwas implored for mercy اشتداgrew harsher
No captive, fettered in his chains, his neck drawn forth
For no captive shuffling in his fetters, his neck bound
beneath a tyrant’s sword that only grew fiercer whenever mercy was begged,
for the sword of a tyrant who grows harsher whenever implored,
بأتعسmore wretched منيthan me حينwhen ألقاكI meet you شاكياًlamenting
فلاso not أجدنI surely find إلاexcept التكبَّرَhaughtiness والصداand rejection
is more wretched than I when I come before you complaining,
is more wretched than I when I meet you, lamenting,
only to find arrogance and rebuff.
only to find haughtiness and rejection.
وماand nothing ساءنيpained me إلاexcept تذكُّرremembering عزتيmy dignity
وبأسيand my might الذيwhich لوif صادمclashed with الجبلthe mountain انهداwould have crumbled
Nothing pains me but the memory of my pride
And nothing pains me but remembering my dignity
and of my might—which, had it struck a mountain, would have brought it down.
and my might—had it clashed with a mountain, that mountain would have crumbled.
فداؤكa ransom for you ماwhat ضيعتهI squandered it منof سيادةsovereignty
تعودit returns وتبقىand endures يومthe day ترضينyou are content بيwith me عبداas a slave
May all the sovereignty I squandered be your ransom:
The sovereignty I have squandered is a ransom for you;
it will return and endure the day you consent to take me as your slave.
it will return and endure the day you accept me as a slave.
