And the hour has come for the two faithful promise-givers.

The valley performed its rites in the morning,

And came to you at midmorning with congratulations.

وطاف الشعب يجمعه خطيب

قويم الرأي مصدوق البيان

And the people circled round, gathered by an orator

Of sound judgment and trusted speech.

مكان الأريحيَّة والأماني

Its impact touched, within every soul,

The seat of generosity and hopes.

ومكَّن ما بنيت على السجايا

ومكَّن ما بنيت على السجايا

وهدَّ الهادمين لكل باني

وهدَّ الهادمين لكل باني

And strengthened what you built upon innate virtues,

And toppled those who would topple every builder.

وكان نذير طائفة ترامت

بها الأهواء خلف الأفعوان

بها الأهواء خلف الأفعوان

And it was a warning to a faction flung

By its passions after the great serpent.

لذاك البأس ساعته اضطراراً

لذاك البأس ساعته اضطراراً

وللعظة الكريمة كل آن

وللعظة الكريمة كل آن

That force has its hour when necessity demands,

But noble admonition belongs to every moment.

وقد يغني عن اليد وهي حقٌّ

وقد يغني عن اليد وهي حقٌّ

على الإنسان تأثير اللسان

على الإنسان تأثير اللسان

And the hand may be dispensed with, though it is a duty

Upon humankind, through the influence of the tongue.

زعيم المخلصين اخترت صحباً

مضوا بالركب في طرق الأمان

مضوا بالركب في طرق الأمان

Leader of the devoted, you chose companions

Who led the caravan along paths of safety.

يريدون المصير كما أرادوا

وفيما دبروا كل الضمان

They seek the outcome as they wished it,

And in what they planned lies full assurance.

فما للثائرين عليك عادوا

So what ails the rebels against you, who have returned

As routed bands before the contest's appointed time?

تركتهمُ وما تركوا جدالاً

وراءك في الحقيقة والعيان

You left them, yet they did not abandon disputation

In your wake, in truth and in plain sight.

فهم يخفون ما أبديت منهم

ويبكون المنافع بالأغاني

ويبكون المنافع بالأغاني

For they conceal what you exposed of them,

And lament their lost advantages in song.

وهم يتنقلون بلاد دليل

وهم يتنقلون بلاد دليل

وهم يتكلمون بلا معاني

وهم يتكلمون بلا معاني

And they wander without a guide [apparently intended; literally, the text reads “a guide's lands”],

And they speak without meaning.

فهل عدمت مكايدهم سبيلاً

وقد فروا من الحرب العوان

وقد فروا من الحرب العوان

Have their plots, then, found no way forward,

Now that they have fled the oft-renewed war?

فإن صبروا على ما أنت قاض

فإن صبروا على ما أنت قاض

عليهم فهْو إذعان الجبان

عليهم فهْو إذعان الجبان

If they endure what you decree

Against them, it is a coward's submission.

وما لزعيمهم ما زال فيهم

وما لزعيمهم ما زال فيهم

يسيرُ إلى الصلاةِ بمهرجان

يسيرُ إلى الصلاةِ بمهرجان

And what ails their leader, who still among them

Goes to prayer with a festive procession?

وما يدري أللعز اختيالاً

وما يدري أللعز اختيالاً

يتيه بموكب أم للهوان

يتيه بموكب أم للهوان

And he does not know whether it is for glory that, proudly,

He struts with a procession, or for disgrace.

أضر به العناد فراح منه

مريض العقل واليد والجنان

مريض العقل واليد والجنان

Obstinacy harmed him, and through it he became

Sick in mind, hand, and heart.

فلا غدواته غدوات إنس

فلا غدواته غدوات إنس

ولا روحاته روحات جان

ولا روحاته روحات جان

So his morning outings are not those of humans,

Nor his evening outings those of jinn.

نصرتك يا وزير الشعب طوعاً

نصرتك يا وزير الشعب طوعاً

وللشعب افتناني وافتتاني

وللشعب افتناني وافتتاني

I supported you willingly, O minister of the people,

And to the people belong my artistry and devotion.

وتابعت الذي أرضى وأغنى

وتابعت الذي أرضى وأغنى

بلادك من مآثرك الحسان

بلادك من مآثرك الحسان

And I followed what pleased and enriched

Your land, among your noble achievements.

وحسبك أنني في كل أمر

وحسبك أنني في كل أمر

أعاني من جهادك ما تعاني

أعاني من جهادك ما تعاني

And it is enough for you that, in every matter,

I endure in your struggle what you endure.

ولي في كل ما أرجو وترجو

ولي في كل ما أرجو وترجو

يقين ملء نفسي والزمان

يقين ملء نفسي والزمان

And I have, in all that I hope for and you hope for,

A certainty filling my soul and time itself.

وللباغي عليَّ وإن تمادى

وللباغي عليَّ وإن تمادى

نصيبٌ من سماحي والحنان

نصيبٌ من سماحي والحنان

And the one who wrongs me, even if he persists,

Has a share of my forbearance and tenderness.
