يقولونthey say ماتdied الشاعرانthe two poets ولمand did not تَنُحْyou lament
يقولون مات الشاعران ولم تَنُحْ
وقدand indeed ناحlamented أهلthe people of المشرقينthe two Easts عليهماover them both
وقد ناح أهل المشرقين عليهما
They say, 'The two poets have died, yet you have not lamented,
though the people of the two Easts have mourned them.'
ولمand did not يدعنيinvite me الجمعانthe two gatherings فيat موعديهماtheir two appointed occasions
ولم يدعني الجمعان في موعديهما
وإنيand indeed I لأغنىsurely the least in need الصحبthe companions عنof دعوتيهماtheir two invitations
وإني لأغنى الصحب عن دعوتيهما
Nor did the two gatherings invite me to their appointed occasions,
and of all companions, I have least need of their two invitations.
لئنeven if فارقleft الدنياthis world الصديقانthe two friends بغتةًsuddenly
لئن فارق الدنيا الصديقان بغتةً
فقدthen indeed أخذاthey both took منfrom خيرهاits bounty حصَّتيهماtheir two shares
فقد أخذا من خيرها حصَّتيهما
Though the two friends left this world suddenly,
they had already taken their shares of its bounty.
وأغناهماand enriched them both ماwhat استودعاthey both entrusted قيضتيهماtheir two hands (probable intended reading)
وأغناهما ما استودعا قيضتيهما
وأغلاهماand made them both precious ماwhat استودعاthey both entrusted مهجتيهماtheir two hearts
وأغلاهما ما استودعا مهجتيهما
And what they entrusted to their hands [probable reading] enriched them,
and what they entrusted to their hearts made them precious.
ونالاand they both attained منof الإجلالreverence فيat مأتميهماtheir two mourning assemblies
ونالا من الإجلال في مأتميهما
مداهits utmost extent كماjust as نالاهthey both attained it فيat موسميهماtheir two festivals
مداه كما نالاه في موسميهما
And at their two mourning assemblies they attained reverence
to its fullest extent, as they had attained it at their two festivals.
ليَmine الدمعtears أستشفيI seek healing بهthrough it فيin نواهماtheir absence
ليَ الدمع أستشفي به في نواهما
إذاwhen أبطأتwere slow بيwith me حاملاتيmy bearers إليهماto them both
إذا أبطأت بي حاملاتي إليهما
Mine are tears; through them I seek healing in their absence,
when my bearers are slow to bring me to them.
وكانand it was بوديmy wish لوif only تقدمhad come earlier مصرعيmy death
وكان بودي لو تقدم مصرعي
فلاso that not أشهدI witness الندينthe two peers فيat مصرعيهماtheir two deaths
فلا أشهد الندين في مصرعيهما
And I wished my death had come first,
so I would not witness the two peers at their deaths.
وفيتI kept faith بعهدwith the covenant of الحيthe living والميتand the dead واستوتand became equal
وفيت بعهد الحي والميت واستوت
أماميbefore me همومthe cares of الجانبينthe two sides كليهماboth of them
أمامي هموم الجانبين كليهما
I kept faith with the living and the dead; equal are
before me the cares of both sides alike.
