What you do has exalted the realm and kingship,

for those who are followed and those who follow.

You journeyed and rendered the Caliph his due,

and returned with the people's hopes in the vanguard.

وأودعت نجميك اللذين تزوَّدا

عتاد المعالي حيث ترعى الودائع

And you entrusted your two stars, who had equipped themselves

with the provisions of greatness, where entrusted charges are tended.

تعدُّهما للشرق يسترجعانه

وقد كملت أسبابه والذرائع

You prepare them for the East, that they may reclaim it,

and its means and resources are now complete.

نصرت بني عثمان أهلك نصرة

لها في قلوب المسلمين مواقع

You gave the sons of Uthman, your kin, support

that has a place in Muslim hearts.

تذكِّرُهم معروفَ جدك فيهمُ

وليس له فيما يشاء منازع

وليس له فيما يشاء منازع

It reminds them of your grandfather's kindness among them,

and none challenges him in what he wills.

تسوق إليهم جحفلاً بعد جحفل

يذود العدى عن حوضهم ويدافع

You send them host after host,

driving foes from their pool and defending it.

وجيشك أولى أن يسير مزوداً

وجيشك أولى أن يسير مزوداً

إلى ذلك الميدان لولا الموانع

إلى ذلك الميدان لولا الموانع

And your army is better entitled to march, well supplied,

to that battlefield, were it not for the hindrances.

Peace be upon Egypt's independence, and surely it

will return to Egypt in your bright days.

أألبث مغلولاً سجيناً مقيداً

Am I to remain shackled, imprisoned, bound,

while fierce battles rage around the Commander of the Faithful?

ومن لي بأنباء اليقين عن الوغى

ومن لي بأنباء اليقين عن الوغى

فقد سئمت بغي الرواة المسامع

فقد سئمت بغي الرواة المسامع

And who will bring me certain tidings of the battle?

For ears have wearied of the reporters' malice.

ولو كانت الأشجان تحمل هاتفاً

بها لأقلَّتني القوافي الروائع

بها لأقلَّتني القوافي الروائع

And if sorrows could carry one who cries out

about them, the wondrous rhymes would have borne me.

وما خفت أن ألقى هنالك مصرعي

وفي كل يوم لي بمصر مصارع

وفي كل يوم لي بمصر مصارع

Nor would I fear meeting my death there,

while every day in Egypt holds deaths for me.

وإن دمي أولى بإرواء غلتي

إذا بتُّ لا تروي غليلي المدامع

And my blood is better suited to slaking my thirst,

when I spend the night and tears do not quench my burning thirst.

وقد عادت الدولات والحق بينها

غريب إذا لم يحمه البأس ضائع

And the states have turned hostile, while justice among them

is a stranger, lost if might does not protect it.

فنون مراميها ضروب حبالها

تصارعه حيناً وحيناً تخادع

Diverse are their aims; manifold are their snares;

they wrestle with it at times, and at times practice deceit.

إذا جمعتها محنة أو ضغينة

على الشرق يوماً فرقتها المطامع

If an ordeal or a grudge unites them

against the East one day, covetous ambitions divide them.

وإني نذير الغرب والغرب آثم

بهاوية لو يجمع الشرقَ جامع

بهاوية لو يجمع الشرقَ جامع

And I warn the West—the West is guilty—

of an abyss, should a unifier unite the East.

على السيف زجر الحاقدين إذا بغوا

وليس عليه أن تزول الطبائع

وليس عليه أن تزول الطبائع

The sword must restrain the spiteful when they transgress,

but it is not its task to erase their natures.

سلمت أمير النيل تحمي ذماره

سلمت أمير النيل تحمي ذماره

وعرشك مرفوع ودهرك طائع

وعرشك مرفوع ودهرك طائع

May you be safe, Prince of the Nile, guarding its honor,

with your throne raised high and your time obedient.
