Hope rests in you, whether you greet or bid farewell,

whether deliberate in what you seek or swift.

حسب المواطن من صفاتك أنها

وجدتك مشتد العزيمة أروعا

وجدتك مشتد العزيمة أروعا

The fields of action need only this among your qualities:

they have found you firm of resolve and valiant.

تسعى إلى خير المقاصد مفرداً

فتنال منها ما نأى وتمنعا

فتنال منها ما نأى وتمنعا

You strive alone toward the noblest aims,

and attain among them what was far off and inaccessible.

حتى أعدت من المناقب والعلى

حتى أعدت من المناقب والعلى

ما أفقد الدهر العنيد وضيعا

ما أفقد الدهر العنيد وضيعا

Until you restored, of virtues and glory,

what stubborn time had taken away and squandered.

وجمعت بين الأمتين موفَّقاً

وجمعت بين الأمتين موفَّقاً

للخير بالسبب الذي لن يقطعا

للخير بالسبب الذي لن يقطعا

And you united the two nations, blessed with success,

for good, through a bond that will never be severed.

وكفيت شعبك أن يراع بحادث

وكفيت شعبك أن يراع بحادث

ويخاف بأساً للعداة ومطمعا

ويخاف بأساً للعداة ومطمعا

And you spared your people alarm at any calamity

and fear of the foes' might and greed.

وملأت عصرك بالفتوحات التي

وملأت عصرك بالفتوحات التي

ما غادرت حصناً أشم وموقعا

ما غادرت حصناً أشم وموقعا

And you filled your age with conquests that

left no lofty fortress or position untouched,

بكتائب أظللتها بخوافق

بكتائب أظللتها بخوافق

كالسحب إلا أنها لن تقشعا

كالسحب إلا أنها لن تقشعا

with battalions you shaded with fluttering banners,

like clouds, except that they will never disperse.

ورميت خصم الملك بالحرب التي

فيها نصرت على الحسام المدفعا

فيها نصرت على الحسام المدفعا

And you assailed the realm's foe with a war

in which you gave the cannon victory over the sword.

ما ثار محتدماً وأرسل مارجاً

ما ثار محتدماً وأرسل مارجاً

حتى هوت شمُّ الرواسي رُكَّما

حتى هوت شمُّ الرواسي رُكَّما

No sooner did it erupt in fury and unleash flame

than the lofty, firmly rooted mountains fell in heaps.

وسطت جنودك في البلاد فزلزلت

وسطت جنودك في البلاد فزلزلت

رهباً وضيقت الفضاء الموسعا

رهباً وضيقت الفضاء الموسعا

And your troops swept through the land, shaking it

with terror and constricting its spacious expanse.

ما زال بأسك في القبائل سائراً

ما زال بأسك في القبائل سائراً

ملء الجوانح بالأعادي موقعا

ملء الجوانح بالأعادي موقعا

Your might never ceased moving among the tribes,

filling their hearts and striking down the foes,

حتى جرى دمهم فروى غلة

حتى جرى دمهم فروى غلة

لم يروها النيل المبارك مترعا

لم يروها النيل المبارك مترعا

until their blood flowed and quenched a thirst

the blessed Nile, brimful, had not quenched.

وأتاك محتفلاً بحكمك راضيا

وأتاك محتفلاً بحكمك راضيا

من كان يأبى أن يذل ويخضعا

من كان يأبى أن يذل ويخضعا

And there came to you, rejoicing in your rule and content,

those who once refused to be humbled and submit.

فغفرت ذنب التائبين تكرماً

فغفرت ذنب التائبين تكرماً

وحبوتهم صفو الحياة تبرعا

وحبوتهم صفو الحياة تبرعا

So you magnanimously forgave the repentant their sin,

and freely bestowed on them life's serenity.

أتمم عليهم هذه النعمى ولا

أتمم عليهم هذه النعمى ولا

تحرمهم من نور وجهك مطلعا

تحرمهم من نور وجهك مطلعا

Complete this blessing upon them, and do not

deny them a glimpse of the light of your face.

وارفق بهم فلقد تكاد قلوبهم

وارفق بهم فلقد تكاد قلوبهم

شوقاً إلى ملقاك أن تتصدعا

شوقاً إلى ملقاك أن تتصدعا

And be gentle with them, for their hearts almost

split apart with longing to meet you.

زرهم زيارة جدك الأعلى الذي

زرهم زيارة جدك الأعلى الذي

لم تخل من ذكرى نداه موضعا

لم تخل من ذكرى نداه موضعا

Visit them as did your great forefather, who

left no place without a memory of his bounty.

واستعرض الجند الرهيب ممثلاً

لك كيف ساق إلى العصاة المصرعا

لك كيف ساق إلى العصاة المصرعا

And review the fearsome army, showing

you how it brought death to the rebels:

عظة لمن أبقيت لا متشفيا

عظة لمن أبقيت لا متشفيا

بالهالكين ولا لهم متوجعا

بالهالكين ولا لهم متوجعا

a warning to those you spared, not gloating

over the dead, nor grieving for them.

حيناً وحينا فِضْ ببرِّك فيهم

حيناً وحينا فِضْ ببرِّك فيهم

حتى ترى الصحراء روضاً ممرعا

حتى ترى الصحراء روضاً ممرعا

From time to time, pour forth your kindness among them,

until you see the desert become a lush meadow,

ويدوم مضموناً نعيم حياتهم

ويدوم مضموناً نعيم حياتهم

ما دمت للنيلين أوسع منبعا

ما دمت للنيلين أوسع منبعا

and the bliss of their lives endures, assured,

so long as you remain a more abundant source for the two Niles.

لهم الهناء فقد جرى في أرضهم

لهم الهناء فقد جرى في أرضهم

نهر من النهرين أحلى مشرعا

نهر من النهرين أحلى مشرعا

Joy is theirs, for through their land flows

a river sweeter to drink from than the two rivers.

لو كان بشّرهم بعهدك ناصح

لو كان بشّرهم بعهدك ناصح

ما صدَّقوا مهديَّهم فيما ادَّعى

ما صدَّقوا مهديَّهم فيما ادَّعى

Had a sincere counselor brought them glad tidings of your reign,

they would not have believed their Mahdi's claims.

ولما أقاموا دون جندك معقلاً

ولما أقاموا دون جندك معقلاً

ولما رأوا إلا إليك المفزعا

ولما رأوا إلا إليك المفزعا

Nor would they have built a stronghold against your army,

nor seen any refuge except in you.

ستراهمُ إذ تلتقيك وفودُهم

ستراهمُ إذ تلتقيك وفودُهم

كالبحر ماج عبابُه فتدفعا

كالبحر ماج عبابُه فتدفعا

You will see them, when their delegations meet you,

like the sea, its billows heaving and rushing forward.

وتكاد من فرط السرور وجوههم

وتكاد من فرط السرور وجوههم

تبيضُّ حتى تجتليها لُمَّعا

تبيضُّ حتى تجتليها لُمَّعا

And from sheer joy their faces almost

turn white, until you behold them gleaming.

باقين لاختاروا إليك المرجعا

باقين لاختاروا إليك المرجعا

If the departed knew what you have bestowed upon the

survivors, they would choose to return to you.

ولو استغاثوا قبل ذاك من الردى

ولو استغاثوا قبل ذاك من الردى

وجدوا شفيعاً من رضاك مشفعا

وجدوا شفيعاً من رضاك مشفعا

And had they sought rescue from death before then,

they would have found in your favor an intercessor whose plea was accepted.

عباس للإيمان والسلطان وال

عباس للإيمان والسلطان وال

أوطان ما أصبحت فينا مزمعا

أوطان ما أصبحت فينا مزمعا

Abbas, for faith, the Sultan, and the

homelands is all that you are now resolved to do among us.

ما زال وعد اللّه بين عباده

ما زال وعد اللّه بين عباده

حتى رأوك وفاءه المتوقعا

حتى رأوك وفاءه المتوقعا

God's promise endured among His servants,

until they saw in you its awaited fulfillment.

فادع الشعوب إلى الخليفة جامعاً

فادع الشعوب إلى الخليفة جامعاً

في اللّه بين الدين والدنيا معا

في اللّه بين الدين والدنيا معا

So summon the peoples to the Caliph, uniting

in God, religion and worldly life together.

واجعل لها في كل قطرٍ مُبعَدٍ

واجعل لها في كل قطرٍ مُبعَدٍ

عنها مناراً أو طريقاً مهيعا

عنها مناراً أو طريقاً مهيعا

And set for them, in every land far removed

from them, a beacon or a broad, open road.

لا زلت ميمون التنقُّل محيياً

لا زلت ميمون التنقُّل محيياً

لمقامك المصطاف والمتربعا

لمقامك المصطاف والمتربعا

May you ever be blessed in your travels, bringing life

to summer and spring retreats through your stay.

ورعاك من أعطاك حكماً عادلاً

ورعاك من أعطاك حكماً عادلاً

وهُدىً تسوس به ممالك أربعا

وهُدىً تسوس به ممالك أربعا

And may He protect you—He who gave you just rule

and guidance by which you govern four kingdoms.
