O Muslim West, how could you fail to heed

O West of Islam, how were you heedless of

the Christian West in the lands of the East?

أنت الأحق بها وإن لم تستطع

سبقاً إليها يا ابنَ ديني فالْحَقِ

You have the greater claim to those lands; and if you cannot

get there first, O son of my faith, then catch up.

You chose its frivolity, and it brought me harm,

while it chose from me what profits, without distinction.

And it chose what was useful from me, making no distinctions.

وأخذت عني اللهو غير محاذر

وأخذت عني اللهو غير محاذر

أعقابه فاربأ بنفسك وارفق

أعقابه فاربأ بنفسك وارفق

And from me you took idle pleasure, unmindful

And you took amusement from me, without fearing

of its consequences—so hold yourself above it, and rise.
