رب حل الوباء مصر ولا أع
لمcompletion of 'I know' كيفhow المصيرthe outcome بعدafter الوباءِthe plague
لم كيف المصير بعد الوباءِ
O Lord, the plague has struck Egypt, and I do not know
What my fate will be after the plague:
أصريعاًstricken dead? أكونI shall be فيin القبرthe grave مبكيfirst part of 'mourned'
أصريعاً أكون في القبر مبكي
ياًcompletion of 'mourned' منby الفضلvirtue والهدىand guidance والعلاءand eminence
ياً من الفضل والهدى والعلاء
Shall I be dead in the grave, mourned
By virtue, guidance, and eminence,
أمor حزيناًgrieving علىover قريبa kinsman عزيزdear
أم حزيناً على قريب عزيز
أوor حبيبa loved one ذيpossessing ذمةhonor ووفاءand fidelity
أو حبيب ذي ذمة ووفاء
Or grieving over a dear kinsman,
Or a loved one of honor and fidelity,
أمor صحيحَsound الفؤادthe heart والجسمand the body مسروfirst part of 'gladdened'
أم صحيحَ الفؤاد والجسم مسرو
راًcompletion of 'gladdened' بشملby a circle of loved ones مجمَّعٍgathered together وهناءand well-being
راً بشمل مجمَّعٍ وهناء
Or sound of heart and body, gladdened
By loved ones reunited and well-being?
ربO Lord إنيindeed I موزعtorn اللبِّthe mind فارحمso have mercy
رب إني موزع اللبِّ فارحم
تائهاًone bewildered بينbetween خيفةfear ورجاءand hope
تائهاً بين خيفة ورجاء
O Lord, my mind is torn; have mercy
On one bewildered between fear and hope.
