How many a journey have I gained nothing from but
How many journeys brought me nothing but
a stranger’s humiliation and bewilderment before the unknown—
a stranger’s humiliation and an unknown man’s bewilderment,
والعلمand awareness بالعجزof helplessness المقيدrestraining أمتيmy nation
عنfrom نجدةaiding المستصرخthe one crying for help المخذولthe forsaken
and knowledge of the impotence that fetters my nation,
and awareness of the helplessness that restrains my nation
keeping it from aiding the forsaken one who cries for help.
from aiding the forsaken man who cries for help!
سافرتI traveled أطلبI seek مكسباًa gain أحييI revive بهwith it
شرفthe nobility of الرجاءhope وطاهرand the pure المأمولwhat is hoped for
I traveled, seeking gain with which to revive
I traveled seeking a gain with which to revive
hope’s dignity and the purity of aspiration.
the nobility of hope and pure aspiration.
ونشرتand I published شعريmy poetry مفصحاًmaking plain عنconcerning غايةa goal
أرجوI hope إليهاto it أنthat أنالI attain وصوليmy arrival
I sent forth my verse, giving clear voice to a goal
And I published my poetry, making plain a goal
toward which I hoped to make my way.
that I hoped to reach.
فوجدتthen I found قوميmy people كلهمall of them فيin شاغلa preoccupation
عنaway from دائبa tireless striver مثليlike me بهمwith them مشغولpreoccupied
But I found my people, every one of them, engrossed in concerns,
Then I found my people all preoccupied,
heedless of a tireless man like me, whose concern was them.
heedless of a tireless striver like me, preoccupied with them.
فرجعتso I returned إلاexcept منof هموميmy worries خالياًempty-handed
وذممتand I deplored عقبىthe outcome of غربتيmy being away from home ورحيليand my travels
So I returned with nothing but my cares,
So I returned empty-handed, save for my worries,
and deplored the outcome of my exile and departure.
and deplored the outcome of my time away from home and my travels.
وبكيتand I wept حظthe fate of الفضلmerit فيin دهرٍan age علىtoward
مثليone like me بماwith what يسعىhe strives إليهtoward it بخيلmiserly
I wept for merit’s lot in an age when
And I wept for the fate of merit in an age that is, toward
a miser, through what he pursues, rose above one like me.
one like me, miserly with what he strives for.
