Every youth who excelled
in poetry continued to be called Ahmad,
حتىuntil انتصرتyou championed لهfor it فكنso you became (continued)
حتى انتصرت له فكن
تَyou (verb ending) بهthrough it عليناover us سيداa master
تَ به علينا سيدا
until you championed it and became
through it a master over us.
فامددso extend اليناto us تغنناspare us
فامدد الينا تغننا
عنfrom ذلةhumiliation الشكوىpleading يداa hand
عن ذلة الشكوى يدا
So extend to us—to spare us
the humiliation of pleading—a hand.
لوif لمdid not تُخِفْyou frighten بسوىwith anything other than القريverse (continued)
لو لم تُخِفْ بسوى القري
ضcompletion of 'verse' عدىfoes الحمىthe sanctuary لكفىit would have sufficed العدىthe foes
ض عدى الحمى لكفى العدى
Had you frightened with nothing but verse
the sanctuary's foes, it would have sufficed against them.
