سلاماً على حصنكم والعلمْ

Peace upon your fortress and the flag,

and may your assembly be protected among the nations.

سلاماً على ذلك المزدحم

سلاماً على ذلك المزدحم

Peace upon that meeting-place,

peace upon that thronged gathering.

ومجداً ليومكمُ في الوجو

ومجداً ليومكمُ في الوجو

د مقبلة المرتجى والقدم

د مقبلة المرتجى والقدم

And glory to your day in existence,

welcoming hope and progress.

يكفر فيه الزمان الذنوب

يكفر فيه الزمان الذنوب

ويرجع من حقكم ما هضم

ويرجع من حقكم ما هضم

In it, time atones for sins,

and restores what was denied of your rights.

بهذا الرواق وهذا الرواء

بهذا الرواق وهذا الرواء

تألف شملكمُ والْتأم

With this portico and this splendor,

your ranks have united and come together.

تطوف الوفود به هاتفين

مطاف الحجيج بذاك الحرم

مطاف الحجيج بذاك الحرم

Delegations circle it, raising cries,

as pilgrims circle that sanctuary.

فما اعتز رمسيس في مثله

فما اعتز رمسيس في مثله

جلالاً ولا قاربته إرم

جلالاً ولا قاربته إرم

For Ramesses never gloried in its like

in majesty, nor did Iram approach it.

فتوح الممالك ما نلتمو

فتوح الممالك ما نلتمو

ه يومكم أم وفاء الذمم

ه يومكم أم وفاء الذمم

Are conquests of kingdoms what you attained

on your day, or the fulfillment of pledges?

أمانة مستوثق معلنٍ

أمانة مستوثق معلنٍ

لكم من سرائره ما كتم

لكم من سرائره ما كتم

The fidelity of one seeking assurance, revealing

to you the secrets he had concealed.

لقد أعجب الترك ما قلتمُ

لقد أعجب الترك ما قلتمُ

وأكبر ما تصنعون العجم

وأكبر ما تصنعون العجم

The Turks indeed admired what you said,

and non-Arabs esteemed what you do.

وطارت بأخباره المبرقا

وطارت بأخباره المبرقا

ت تسبق بالطيبات الديم

ت تسبق بالطيبات الديم

And telegrams flew with its news,

outstripping the steady rains with glad tidings.

عقائد خالدة في القلوبِ

عقائد خالدة في القلوبِ

ثبتم عليها ثبات الهرم

ثبتم عليها ثبات الهرم

Convictions everlasting in the hearts,

on which you stood as firmly as the pyramid.

وأدرك من سن هذا الجها

وأدرك من سن هذا الجها

د أن الكرامة في المختتم

د أن الكرامة في المختتم

And whoever instituted this struggle realized

that dignity lies in the outcome.

وعاد لقصدكمُ شاهداً

وعاد لقصدكمُ شاهداً

من ارتاب في قصدكم واتهم

من ارتاب في قصدكم واتهم

And to your purpose now bears witness

the one who doubted your purpose and accused you.

وهذا غريمكمُ الملتوي

وهذا غريمكمُ الملتوي

تجمّل بعد الأذى واحتشم

تجمّل بعد الأذى واحتشم

And this devious adversary of yours

put on courtesy after harm, and showed restraint.

تولى بغايته عابساً

وعاودها فاتناً فابتسم

وعاودها فاتناً فابتسم

He turned away with his goal, frowning,

and returned to it beguiling, then smiled.

إلى أجل أم إلى منتهى

مراميه يلزمكم ما التزم

For a fixed term, or until the culmination

of his designs, does he bind you by what he pledged?

وهل ينجلي الأفق أم يرتمي

وهل ينجلي الأفق أم يرتمي

بعاصفة بعد هذا النسم

بعاصفة بعد هذا النسم

And will the horizon clear, or be buffeted

by a storm after this breeze?

ولو كان يعرف عقبى النزا

ع في الحق من زمن لا نحسم

Had he known the outcome of the dispute

over right, it would have been settled long ago.

لكم ماله وعليه الذي

عليكم يخيركم إن قسم

You have what he has, and he bears what

you bear; he gives you the choice if he apportions.

وليس يقال فريق هفا

وليس يقال فريق ظلم

وليس يقال فريق ظلم

And it would not be said: one side erred;

nor would it be said: one side acted unjustly.

يضيع على مصر هذا النعي

م إن لم يكن كل بيت أجم

This bliss will be lost to Egypt

unless every house is a stronghold.

وما أنا بالآمن المطمئن

وما أنا بالآمن المطمئن

إلى المستعد الذي لم ينم

إلى المستعد الذي لم ينم

And I am not at ease or reassured

by the prepared one who has not slept.

أعد المرابط في المسلكين

أعد المرابط في المسلكين

ومن ملك المسلكين اقتحم

ومن ملك المسلكين اقتحم

He readied the outposts on both routes,

and whoever controls both routes can storm in.

وهل يترك الذئب عاداته

وإن لبس الذئب ثوب الغنم

وإن لبس الذئب ثوب الغنم

And will the wolf abandon his habits,

even if the wolf wears the garb of sheep,

ويعفو عن الطيِّب المشتهى

ويعفو عن الطيِّب المشتهى

وما عف عن باليات الرمم

وما عف عن باليات الرمم

and spare what is delicious and desired,

though he did not refrain from crumbling bones?

وهل تتناول صم الصخو

وهل تتناول صم الصخو

ر أنياب من أثقلته التخم

ر أنياب من أثقلته التخم

And can the solid rocks be seized

by the fangs of one weighed down by surfeit?

وداهية مرجف بالذي

وداهية مرجف بالذي

تعدّى به غيره فانهزم

تعدّى به غيره فانهزم

And a schemer spreads alarm with that

which another used for aggression, then was defeated.

وليس الذي قاله حجة

وليس الذي قاله حجة

فقد ألف الناس هذا النغم

فقد ألف الناس هذا النغم

And what he said is no proof,

for people have grown accustomed to this tune.

وقد يتكلف تيه المدل

وقد يتكلف تيه المدل

لِ من في حشاه الجوى والألم

لِ من في حشاه الجوى والألم

And the haughtiness of the pampered may be feigned

by one whose breast holds burning grief and pain.

أيزعم ملككم ملكه

وهول القيامة فيما زعم

Does he claim your kingdom as his own,

when the terror of Resurrection lies in his claim?

وهل يستطيع اغتصاب الرقا

وهل يستطيع اغتصاب الرقا

ب من بمراس النفوس اصطدم

ب من بمراس النفوس اصطدم

And can he seize people's necks,

he who has collided with the mettle of souls?

وما صنعت بالمغير القلا

وما صنعت بالمغير القلا

ع صنع إبائكمُ والشمم

ع صنع إبائكمُ والشمم

Fortresses have not acted against the raider

as your defiance and lofty pride have.

لكم ما تشاؤون من أهبة

لكم ما تشاؤون من أهبة

غداً وله ما نوى واعتزم

غداً وله ما نوى واعتزم

For you, whatever preparations you desire

tomorrow; for him, what he intended and resolved.

وحسبكمُ شملكم عدة

وحسبكمُ شملكم عدة

وحسبكمُ صبركم معتَصَم

وحسبكمُ صبركم معتَصَم

Your unity is equipment enough for you,

and your patience is refuge enough for you.

ولولا مواقفكم في البلا

ولولا مواقفكم في البلا

د داهمها الدهر فيما دهم

د داهمها الدهر فيما دهم

But for your stands in the country,

time would have overwhelmed it along with what it overwhelmed.

ولو كان في البحر ما فيكمُ

ولو كان في البحر ما فيكمُ

على الحق من غيرة لاضطرم

على الحق من غيرة لاضطرم

And if the sea had what is in you

of zeal for right, it would blaze.

ولو حمل الجبل المشمخر

ولو حمل الجبل المشمخر

رُ ما تحملون لمصر انهدم

رُ ما تحملون لمصر انهدم

And if the towering mountain bore

what you bear for Egypt, it would collapse.

وإني لأشهد ما في الغيوب

وإني لأشهد ما في الغيوب

لكم وأروم الذي لم يُرَم

لكم وأروم الذي لم يُرَم

Indeed, I behold what lies in the unseen

for you, and seek what has never been sought.

ومن صارح القوم في أمسه

ومن صارح القوم في أمسه

رأى اليوم فرصته فاغتنم

رأى اليوم فرصته فاغتنم

And he who spoke frankly to the people yesterday

saw his chance today and seized it.

لكم ملك ووزير هما

لكم ملك ووزير هما

ضمان مصيركمُ المحترم

ضمان مصيركمُ المحترم

You have a king and a minister who are

the guarantee of your dignified future.

فهذا بما شئتمُ قد أشار

فهذا بما شئتمُ قد أشار

وهذا بما شئتمُ قد حكم

وهذا بما شئتمُ قد حكم

This one has advised as you wished,

and that one has ruled as you wished.

وأفضى الحمى بمقاليده

وأفضى الحمى بمقاليده

إلى العادل الحر فيما استلم

إلى العادل الحر فيما استلم

And the protected land has yielded its keys

to the just, free man in the charge he received.

تناولها باليقين الصبو

ر لا بالقنوط ولا بالسأم

ر لا بالقنوط ولا بالسأم

He took them with patient conviction,

not with despair, nor with weariness.

وما أحسن العفو من قادر

وما أحسن العفو من قادر

إذا ما اشتفى حاقد وانتقم

إذا ما اشتفى حاقد وانتقم

And how beautiful is pardon from one with power,

when a spiteful man has sated his rancor and taken revenge.

سيجلو عن الأرض جبّارها

سيجلو عن الأرض جبّارها

ويلبث فيها كريم الشيم

ويلبث فيها كريم الشيم

Its tyrant will leave the land,

and one noble in character will remain there.

ولا دولة لسوى المصلحين

ولا دولة لسوى المصلحين

ولا ملك إلا لأهل الهمم

ولا ملك إلا لأهل الهمم

And no power belongs to any but the reformers,

and no dominion except to those of high resolve.

فزعت إلى مهرجان البلاد

فزعت إلى مهرجان البلاد

وبي موجعات الضنى والسقم

وبي موجعات الضنى والسقم

I hastened to the nation's festival,

with the pangs of wasting illness and sickness in me.

وما أنا إلا الرفيق الذي

وما أنا إلا الرفيق الذي

وفى بمواثيقه والقسم

وفى بمواثيقه والقسم

And I am only the companion who

kept his covenants and the oath,

أتى بالمروءة فيما سعى

أتى بالمروءة فيما سعى

وأقبل بالوحي فيما نظم

وأقبل بالوحي فيما نظم

brought noble character to his endeavors,

and came with inspiration in the verse he composed.

يروح ويغدو بفصل الخطاب

يروح ويغدو بفصل الخطاب

عفيف اللسان طهور القلم

عفيف اللسان طهور القلم

He goes forth at evening and morning with decisive speech,

chaste of tongue, pure of pen.
