    To Nabil al-Sururi

The outpouring begins at a point of light.

It journeys into a blue made of the hymns of an age in which you fell.

It contemplates how prayer can be the holy fools' emergence from the abyss of silence as an outpouring,

and, from the tunnel of descent packed with night, a horizon of azure radiance

that unfolds the heavens within you

and gives the expanse a luster... not as dawn rises,

but as poems surge, ecstatic, through the festival,

and the procession bound for the lote tree of rapture dances in longing.

Light begins at the shore of outpouring,

from the dread of death that passes through us stealthily

or assails our dreams in the full glare of silence.

Amid calamities, there is no difference,

whether storms sweep through—our days are all alike—

or fires break out in the silk of lilies oozing from the brows of yearning

and from the faces of the caravan as it presses toward splendor.

And it is all the same, when the dread of death assails us,

whether we whisper together like a flock of sparrows

or weep like owls in the reaches of evening.

The hymns are exultant at your beginning in death's grip, in defiance,

and at your presence, when distance disappears into the grave.

Among the spreading trees of the hymns, you are the meaning of union with infinity:

the splendor of poems in love,

    and the abodes are winged,

and the tambourines are yearning pouring into the hearts of the lovesick.

    They pray behind you.

Are there any but lovers in the corners of the mosques?

At your green prayer niche, undulating with gasps, is there anything but the tenderness of ecstasy

    or the throbs of supplication

that know how to ascend with the wind toward the heavens?

Night prayer lifts us toward the face of divinity.

The hymns bear us as dew bears the touch of light in the morning.

At the moment of rising to the summit of ecstasy, the holy fools have their litanies,

and behind your bier, from the dread of virgin anguish, we have what the holy fools have.

O singer amid the downpour of calamities and night!

How did the upreaching melody fold away?

And how did sorrow disappear into the drinking companions' songs?

    And who bridled the oud?

Who paralyzed the flute of mornings with silence and night... who?

I see in you what cannot be seen,

and soothe the crowding of distance with grief.

I touch sorrow's head, so sorrow may soften,

and go toward you in joy, like children's eyes upon mothers' fingertips.

I see that nothing protects us but a grave in which we take refuge,

or a song in which we hide our dreams, when night prayer is the holy fools' steeds,

and singing their swords... and staying on the embers the meaning of existence.

And I think I improvised your refuge in splendor.

I think I took you from the grave's grip,

that I rejected incantations in the face of this one who snatches people at the height of

    radiance,

forcibly bleeding their days in sorrow.

Has my singing come to nothing?!

Has the magic been squandered in what the poem awoke to,

    and has Abqar become desolate,

its demons died, and stillness turned round?!

Have the pulpits cast us out in weariness...

or have we rejected standing on the thresholds of an age defiled by falsehood and imposture,

    and bowing down...?!

Ours is all this misery, ravaging the seconds...

and mine is all that loss leaves behind,

    and the chosen solitude.

Love is mine, shielding me from coming near to bowing down,

bandaging the collapse of meanings with memories,

distributing through what remains of life the splendor of palms,

    the wildness of winds...

the springs' penetrating flow, the purity of dwelling in lightning's mind.

We take consolation for you in a flash of it...

I gain my grief and meet you in the depths of certainty.

I did not kindle fire in the gatherings of the ecstatic mystics... no... elegies did not please me,

    nor the joy of choosing.

I used to hold Ziryab wherever I wished,

    and hold back tears,

then see your face calling out to me:

Rise high with Ziryab as he sings,

    while you love singing,

    and you are I...

Let Ziryab have the dew's outpouring in the morning,

and teach him the streams' whisper.

Teach him the secrets of the lyres' outpouring under silence's dominion,

the essence of chants that stab the face of darkness

and are graced with the violet's mouth.

Take the fledgling by the hand, and it will become an eagle,

then let your grief drift away like a mirage,

    and your tears like clouds.

For in the virgin garden, the sparrows recite their scriptures, then master the meaning of song.

And in childhood's delirium, we begin out of longing,

when the ecstatic mystics' fire is kindled,

we begin the dance of passion,

and the chosen anguish carries us to where the beloved's essence lies,

and where union is attained with dawn,

    with light,

    with the sea,

    with love,

with the caravan of loved ones reciting their litanies like streams in the haze of virgin ecstasy.

Nothing is more beautiful than the ecstasy of dancing

in circles of escape from the filth encircling

    the neck of the age.

Nothing is nobler... than your dying so that we may live,

and our living so that we do not fear defiance.

So has your breast grown tight with the tedious delirium?

And have you grown impatient with your remembrance, the seconds languishing in the artery and, in time,

the surge of blood laid open to violation?

We have another rendezvous in which to find consolation,

for us, in the spacious gardens

and in the presence of God and death, there is utter freedom!
