1. 1

    1

    Night descends,

Every second a span of departure in torment.

Silence is a prison with towering walls, coiled around the city's face.

And terror invades the streets as they weep with dust.

And upon the souls, upon the universe's collapse in dusk that never ends...

    Fear-stricken, the souls tremble.

This is a terrifying return of night, O singer's heart.

    Take refuge in sorrow,

For the horror of the flood sweeps over everyone,

    And grief descends mute.

Repeat the chants of your immersion in sorrow,

And the sigh of a city's spirit, plunging gravely wounded into the depths, and of people bowed down at the bottom.

Hunger is an executioner hanging them from the ceiling of stillness and darkness.

Take strings from the heart's ligaments.

Our city is packed with boundless terror,

And humankind is divided into two groups:

Executioners greedily devouring the fruits of the two gardens,

And those shackled by destitution that leads to starvation,

Ewes in a wilderness of wolves.

    Sing,

Perhaps you will raise the dead!

Perhaps the horizon will drink the flood of this night,

Or a spring of twilight will trace its course!

I am gravely wounded, O my companion,

Amid the universe's collapse, I am a thread of sleeplessness,

And I, and you, and they are tattered rags along the edges.

Crueler than the night that passed

    Is the night that comes,

And drowning is more merciful than our hunger pangs.

  16. 2

    2

    Groaning has fenced the earth,

And we are sap in the twilight.

Will you not turn this heart's pounding into melodies,

And the souls' death-rattle into poems that never settle! And will you...?

Will you not invent for us a beginning that cannot be treacherously slain,

    3

    Nor taken unawares by dusk!

    3

Our city was springs... and there was

The face of morning, imprinting prayer-bows on a carpet of fine silk...

    There was...

In every handspan of its streets, glad tidings were heralded and a palace of safety rose,

And the youths' playgrounds brimmed with chants and overflowed with songs,

And the sun built above its crown a nebula that never changed,

And every handspan was a festival.

    It was a divided apple,

So the ecstatic cascade of roses into ruby, and the splendor of chrysanthemums, reunited it,

And what was dry in every second of history grew moist with pearly sweat.

Bullets took the shape of flowers on our foreheads,

And the place could scarcely contain the fragrance.

How, then, does evening return as a collapse,

And the distance grow crowded with humiliation!?

    Who confiscated the hurricane!?

Who imprisoned the thunderbolts in the forearms—who ravaged enchantment!?

    O face of this silence,

Who gave this invasion the flank of time!?

  29. 3

    3

    The sorrow of ruin

Coils like a hurricane around the heart.

    Tongues of fire

    Scorch the soul's inmost core.

Where is the path to the poem,

While the age paints, upon a sea of ash, the image of bleeding without end,

And night devours the reveries that inspire us with the alphabet!?

Where can we escape when we drown?

Indeed, this is the season of night travel through the new wilderness.

We grow used to the paths closing during the journey,

And sudden ophthalmia lining all the guides' pupils with kohl.

We grow used to the flood sweeping over us, black,

We grow used to swimming in it as swords of sacred radiance.

Our pickaxes have grown used to the walls,

And the walls—we know them, and they know us.

So whoever comes to the gallows' timbers to travel on the wind's back toward invention,

Swallows dry, before braving the voyage, some of the rain of anguish,

    Then goes into the twilight.

We grow used to them; they grow used to us,

And we charge into them by force,

And they charge into us by stealth.

And we outwit the days when they become shackles.

We besiege famine in their famine, taking our bellies as bundles,

And some brimming earth as drink,

And we eat from our wishes, so that distance may gorge itself at their banquets...

    But...

Night has never before seeped from the companions' brows,

Or bars from the swords of a caravan pressing on along a road embroidered with gore.

We know the secrets of massacres when the wolves are unleashed and the towering trees grow murky.

    But...

For a sparrow to murder an entire morning,

And the singing driver of white camels to become a butcher,

And those our caravans spared to become henchmen—

Such phenomena go beyond what we are used to.

Calamity wears us, itself in rags, and we wear it as a downpour in discovering the identity of things.

We emerge from our graves in a terrifying resurrection.

We come to the thresholds of this grand collapse, asking the wisdom of the soothsayers of Saba for certain news,

And how it is that ruin devours the dam while the soothsayers fail to see the rat's true nature!

How the gardens part with their greenery and their splendor!

    Dust takes us by surprise,

So we see nothing but dust,

And an abomination occupying the face of the horizon,

Linking it to a murderous age,

And to a procession murderous from the start.
