Tunis of delight—my longing for her has grown,

the soul’s delight and the soul’s repose.

Her people have become stars in a sky

that shone with them—a most precious necklace.

A lovely town that has gathered

such forms of beauty as captivate the discerning.

Through her the earth grew beautiful and rose,

and the stranger grows humble, seeking to dwell in her.

She put the morning sun to shame as she shone,

when she appears, whether from afar or near.

How many a dark-eyed beauty of hers has shot at my heart

with languid glances—arrows from a Qaysite.

    They hit their mark, and no refuge availed;

there is no refuge from a slayer of souls.

Ah, may God preserve our nights in her,

as the drinking companion reveals the cup’s full moons.

    زانتِ الألوانُ من ذاكَ الأديم

    They glide in the finery of their robes;

the colors of that skin were lovely.

Pleasures came through their own doors:

so it has been since ancient times.

So seize it and sip it whenever

it paints the goblets’ cheeks with roses.

    إنَّما الراحَ حياةُ المجلسِ

    And joyfully make it a stairway;

wine alone is the life of the gathering.

Among friends through whom time is serene,

who slew care with the sword Dhu al-Fiqar,

you will see in their gathering nothing but safety

    and conversation over clear wine.

    فاشرَبِ الصرفَ على نقلِ الوقار

    You find your soul the smallest price to pay for them;

so drink it unmixed, with dignity as your relish.

And mix it with nectar from dusky lips,

around roses in the cheek-down of predawn gloom.

    رَونَقُ الحُسنِ لها بالعنَسِ

    Do not wed this virgin wine to the son of heaven;

her beauty’s radiance lies in remaining unwed.

And pluck the lute, for at its melody

care flees in terror to the farthest refuge.

And hear the melodies under its protection,

    sheltered, in safety and triumph.

And behold the strings amid its tresses—

a snare for delight when delight takes flight.

And seize pleasures, for serenity has grown

through a marshal who grew in Tunis:

    Ahmad Pasha, of noble lineage,

the land’s guardian for a sacred triumph.

A king, sprung from kings whose renown

filled the West and overflowed into the East.

They founded glory, and this is their dawn,

shining like a full moon among stars.

    قُطرُهم من نَجلِهِم قَد بَرَقا

    From them comes glory, and from them their full moon;

their land has shone through their son.

He scattered bounty and arrayed an army,

like a deft winnower amid dry stalks.

He perfected the ordering of what he made firm,

bringing safety to the eyes of the drowsy.

So dwell in the Green City and steep yourself in her bounty,

and clothe yourself there in safety and well-being.

Give thanks for the blessing and acknowledge her prosperity,

for she truly drives out the ungrateful.

And when you set foot in some other land,

you will say, longing for that bounteous city:

Tunis of delight—my longing for her has grown,

the soul’s delight and the breath’s ease.

Her people have become stars in a sky

that shone with them—a most precious necklace.
