تذكرني مِن لَستُ أَنسى وِدادَهُ

تذكرني مِن لَستُ أَنسى وِدادَهُ

وَمِن ذِكرِهِ لي مُؤنس وَسَميرُ

وَمِن ذِكرِهِ لي مُؤنس وَسَميرُ

He whose affection I never forget remembered me,

And remembrance of him is my comfort and companion by night.

فَأَهدى كِتاباً كَالنَسيم لَطافَةً

فَأَهدى كِتاباً كَالنَسيم لَطافَةً

بَرد الرَدى عَن مُهجَتي وَيَجيرُ

بَرد الرَدى عَن مُهجَتي وَيَجيرُ

So he sent a letter, gentle as the breeze,

That wards death from my soul and grants me refuge.

حَكى خطهُ الرَوض النَضير تَبَسمَت

بِهِ مُوهِناً لِلاقحوان ثُغورُ

بِهِ مُوهِناً لِلاقحوان ثُغورُ

Its script mirrored a verdant garden, where smiled

Late at night the mouths of daisies.

بَدائع أَلفاظ فَرائد ضَمنها

بَدائع أَلفاظ فَرائد ضَمنها

مَعان إِلى سحر البَيان تُشيرُ

مَعان إِلى سحر البَيان تُشيرُ

Wondrous words, matchless gems; within them

Are meanings that point to the magic of eloquence.

يُحرك أَشجان القُلوب بَديعُهُ

يُحرك أَشجان القُلوب بَديعُهُ

وَيُطربها حَتّى تَكاد تَطيرُ

وَيُطربها حَتّى تَكاد تَطيرُ

Its artistry stirs the sorrows of hearts,

And enraptures them until they almost fly.

فَصادف قَلباً مُدنِفاً مِن هُمومهُ

فَصادف قَلباً مُدنِفاً مِن هُمومهُ

تَوقَد لِلأَشواق فيهِ سَعيرُ

تَوقَد لِلأَشواق فيهِ سَعيرُ

So it found a heart laid low by its cares;

Within it, a fierce fire of longing blazed.

فَزادَ عَن القَلب العَليل هُمومهُ

فَزادَ عَن القَلب العَليل هُمومهُ

كَما زادَ سَرحاً عَن حِماهُ غَيورُ

كَما زادَ سَرحاً عَن حِماهُ غَيورُ

So it drove the ailing heart's cares away,

As a jealous guardian drives a herd from his preserve.

لَئِن كُنتَ لي في كُل خَطب مُساعِداً

لَئِن كُنتَ لي في كُل خَطب مُساعِداً

فَإِنَّكَ بِالفعل الجَميل جَديرُ

فَإِنَّكَ بِالفعل الجَميل جَديرُ

If indeed you have been my helper in every ordeal,

Then surely noble deeds befit you.

وَلا يُسعف الإِنسان إِلّا خَليلُهُ

وَلا يُسعف الإِنسان إِلّا خَليلُهُ

وَأَنتَ خَليلي بَل عَلَيَّ أَميرُ

وَأَنتَ خَليلي بَل عَلَيَّ أَميرُ

And none aids a person but his close friend,

And you are my close friend—nay, a prince over me.

يَطير جَناح القَلب بِالشَوق نَحوَكُم

يَطير جَناح القَلب بِالشَوق نَحوَكُم

وَيقعد جسمي علة وَفتورُ

وَيقعد جسمي علة وَفتورُ

The heart's wing flies toward you with longing,

But illness and languor hold my body back.

فَفي كُل وَقت لي بُكاءٌ وَلَوعَةٌ

فَفي كُل وَقت لي بُكاءٌ وَلَوعَةٌ

وَفي كُل وَقت أَنة وَزَفيرُ

وَفي كُل وَقت أَنة وَزَفيرُ

So at every moment I have tears and anguish,

And at every moment, a groan and a sigh.

وَمِثلي خَليق أَن يَذوب فُؤادَهُ

وَمِثلي خَليق أَن يَذوب فُؤادَهُ

إِلى مثلَكُم شَوقاً وَذاكَ يَسيرُ

إِلى مثلَكُم شَوقاً وَذاكَ يَسيرُ

And the heart of one like me should rightly melt

In longing for one like you—and that is a small thing.

بِهَذا جَرى حُكم الإِلَه وَإِنَّهُ

بِهَذا جَرى حُكم الإِلَه وَإِنَّهُ

عَلى جَمعنا بَعدَ الفِراق قَديرُ

عَلى جَمعنا بَعدَ الفِراق قَديرُ

Thus has God's decree come to pass, and He indeed

Has the power to reunite us after separation.
