I shall meet my death near the dwelling, in sorrow

For you, while my needs of you remain unchanged.

I see myself bereft of my wealth and all my hand possessed,

And all I gathered of newly acquired and inherited riches,

Cast aside on the high sands by the fortress of Sāmah,

Laid out, with all hope of my survival lost to despair.

The hands of visiting women turn me with tenderness,

Pitying my plight and weeping in compassion for my youth.

And love has wasted my body; were I to stand upright

In the wind’s path, it would settle in my place.

Nor is a mother of ostrich chicks in a desert’s depths—

Her flock having strayed from her, hungry, at the caravan’s passing—

Who, when the caravan moved far from her, turned back to it

And found it with both wings plucked bare, empty-bellied—

More grief-stricken than I, the day you began severing

My bonds, though you had been my devoted, intimate companion.
