أَخْجَلْتَyou put to shame بِالثَّغْرِwith the mouth ثَنَايَاfront teeth الأَقَاحْthe daisies

With your mouth, you have put the daisies’ front teeth to shame.
O forelock of night and face of dawn!
وَأَعْجَمَتْand made speechless أَعْيُنُكَyour eyes السِّحْرَmagic مُذْsince

And your eyes have left magic speechless, ever since
you revealed through them the true qualities.
فَياso, oh لَهَاfor them سُودٌblack مِرَاضٌlanguid غَدَتْthey became

Ah, how dark and languid those eyes have become!
We unsheathe for lovers the white blades of dawn.
يِاO لِلْهَوَىfor love مِنْof مُسْعِدٍa sympathizer مُغَرَمٍlovesick

O love, what a lovesick sympathizer!
He saw the grove’s doves sing, and so he lamented.
يَاO بَانَةًa bān-tree مَالَتْit swayed بِأَعْطَافِهِwith his flanks

O bān-tree that swayed with his frame,
it has indeed taught me what these spears are like.
وًَأَنْتِand you يَاO أَسْهُمَarrows أَلْحَاظِهِhis glances

And you, O arrows of his glances,
by God, you have riddled my heart with wounds.
