لَمَّاwhen انْتَهَتْreached عَيْنيmy eye إِلىَto أَحْبَابِهَاits beloveds
شَاهَدْتُI beheld صِرْفَunmixed الرَّاحِwine عَيْنَidentical with حَبَابِهَاits bubbles
When my eye reached those it loves,
I beheld pure wine, identical with its bubbles.
أَأَرَىcould I see? سِوَىother than لَيْلَىLayla إِذَاwhen حَكَمَdecreed الجَفَاestrangement
مِنْهَاfrom her عَلَيَّagainst me بِبُعْدِهَاto her distance وَحِجَابِهَاand her veil
Could I see anything but Layla, when estrangement decrees
her distance and her veil as her sentence upon me,
والَكَوْنُand all existence مِنْamong عُشَّاقِهَاher lovers وَيَفُوتُنُيand eludes me
أَدَبٌa courtesy يَرَاهُdeems it الحُبِّlove مِنْamong آدَابِهَاher courtesies
while all existence is among her lovers—and could I miss
a courtesy that Love counts among her courtesies?
لاَno وَالَّذيby Him who جَعَلmade الضَّنَاwasting sickness وَالحُزْنَand sorrow
جِلْبَابِيmy cloak بِهَاbecause of her وَالحُسْنَand beauty مِنْpart of جِلْبَابِهَاher cloak
No, by Him who made wasting sickness and sorrow
my cloak because of her, and beauty part of her cloak.
وَنَعِمْتُand I found bliss مِنْfrom أَكْوَانِهَاher worlds وَرَأَىand saw السِّوىotherness
غَيْريِsomeone other than me فَأَصْبَحَso became قَلْبُهُhis heart يُكْوَىis seared بِهَاby her
And I found bliss in her worlds; otherness was seen
by someone other than me, whose heart then came to be seared by her.
وَلَقَدْand indeed طَرَقْتُI visited by night الحَيَّthe encampment بَيْنَamid خِيَامِهِits tents
فَكَأَنَّنِيso it was as though I لِلسُّقْمِbecause of sickness مِنْamong أَطْنَابِهَاtheir guy ropes
And indeed I visited the encampment by night, amid its tents,
as though, from sickness, I were one of their guy ropes.
وَقَرأْتand I read هَاتِيكَthose البِيُوتَthe dwellings تَصَفُّحاًscrutinizing
فَكَأَنَّنِيso it was as though I المَسْئُولُthe one questioned عَنْabout إِعْرَابِهَاtheir grammatical parsing
And I read those dwellings, poring over them,
as though I were the one questioned about their parsing.
حَتَّىuntil إِذَاwhen جَذَبَdrew aside الصَّبَاحُmorning لِثَامَهُits veil
وَرَمَتْand she cast مَلِيَحةُthe fair one شَمْسِهِits sun بَنَقِابِهَاoff her face veil
Until, when morning drew aside its veil,
and its sun, the fair one, cast off her face veil,
رَأَتْshe saw الدُّجَيْنَةُthe dim darkness أَنَّنيthat I مِنْof بَعْضِهَاa part of her
فَذَهَبْتُso I went away بِالأَنْوَارِwith the lights عِنْدَat ذِهَابِهَاher departure
the dim darkness saw that I was part of her,
so I carried off the lights at her departure.
وَشَهِدْتُand I beheld لَيْلَىLayla لاَnot يَرَاهَاsees her غَيْرُهَاanyone other than her
وَجَمَالُهَاand her beauty قَدْalready شَفَّshone through مِنْthrough جِلْبَابِهَاher cloak
And I beheld Layla, whom none but she herself sees,
and her beauty had shone through her cloak.
وَطَلَبْتُهَاand I sought her فَوَجَدْتُso I found أَسْبَابَthe means to المُنَىwishes
مَوْصُولَةًbound بالْيَأْسِto despair مَنْof أَسْبَابِهَاher means
And I sought her, and found the means of fulfilling wishes
bound to despair of the means of reaching her,
إلاَّexcept لِمَنْfor whoever أَعْطَىgave الصَّبَابَةَpassionate longing حَقَّهَاits due
وَأَتَىand came to بيوُتَthe dwellings of الحَيِّthe encampment مِنْthrough أَبْوَابِهَاtheir doors
except for one who gave passionate longing its due,
and came to the encampment's dwellings through their doors,
وَوَفَىand was faithful بِعَهْدِto the covenant of رَسُولِهَاher messenger فيin أَمْرِهِhis command
عَنْهَاon her behalf فَقَامَso he stood مَقَامَهُin his place فيat بَابِهَاher door
and was faithful to her messenger's covenant in what he commanded
on her behalf, and so took his place at her door.
