نَسِيَمَO breeze الصَّبَاthe east wind أَذْكَرْتَنِيyou reminded me العَهْدَthe old days بِالوَادِيin the valley
وَهَيَّجْتَand you stirred أَشْوَاقاًlongings شَقَقْنَthey tore apart فُؤَادِيmy heart
O breeze of the east wind, you have reminded me of the old days in the valley,
And stirred longings that tore my heart apart.
فَإِنْso if كُنْتَyou are تُحْيِيyou revive مَيِّتَone dead الهَجْرِseparation والجَوَىand burning anguish
بِقَتْلِthrough slaying الهَوَىlove أَحْييَيْتَنِيyou revived me بِمُرَادِيaccording to my wish
So if you revive one dead from separation and burning anguish,
Through love's slaying you have revived me as I wished.
فَإِنَّيَfor indeed I مُذْsince فَارَقْتُI parted from أَحْبَابَloved ones مُهْجَتِيmy soul
وعُوضْتُand I was compensated مِنْfor قُرْبٍnearness لَهُمْto them بِبُعَادِwith distance
For ever since I parted from those dear to my soul,
And was given distance in place of nearness to them,
جُفُونِيmy eyelids جَفَتْthey forsook نَوْمَsleep الدُّجَىthe night's darkness لِمَضاجِعِيfor my beds
وَصِرْتُand I became جَلِيساُa companion للسُّهَاto al-Suha بِسُهَادِيthrough my sleeplessness
My eyelids have forsaken night's sleep upon my beds,
And in my sleeplessness I have become a companion to al-Suha.
فَيَاso, O ذَلِكَyou there الدَّانِيdrawing near إلىto ذَلِكَthat الحِمَىthe sanctuary
إِذَاwhen ماemphatic particle أَنَخْتَyou make kneel العِيسَthe pale camels فيin ذَلِكَthat الوَادِيthe valley
So, O you there, drawing near to that sanctuary,
When you make the pale camels kneel in that valley,
فَنَادِthen call out بِهِin it السُّكَانَthe dwellers أَسْكَنْتُمُyou have lodged الحَشَاthe heart
وَقُودَfuel for لَظىًa blaze فَالجَمْرُso the embers صَارَbecame مِهَادِيmy bed
Then call out there to the dwellers: “You have lodged in my heart
Fuel for a blaze, so the embers have become my bed.
فَلَمْso ... not أَسْتَطِعْI could فيin اللَّيْلِthe night مَيْلاًa turning لِمَضْجَعِيtoward my bed
أَأَهْجَعُshall I slumber? والنِّيرَانُwhile the fires حَشْوُthe stuffing of وِسَادِيmy pillow
So at night I could not turn toward my bed;
Shall I slumber while fires are the stuffing of my pillow?”
رَعَىmay ... preserve اللهُGod أَيَّاماًdays بِمُنْعَرِجِat the bend of اللَّوَىal-Liwa
وَلَيْلاًand a night نَفَىbanished فِيهِin it الوِصَالُunion رُقَادِيmy sleep
May God preserve the days at the bend of al-Liwa,
And a night in which union banished my sleep.
