لَكَfor you الخَيْرُgoodness دَاعِيthe caller to الخَيْرِgoodness أَسْعِدِaid يَاO سَعْدُSaʿd
إِذَاwhen ماan emphatic particle نَهَىforbids عَنْهagainst it النُّهَىreason وَدَعَاand calls الوَجْدُecstasy
May good be yours! Aid the caller to good, O Saʿd,
when reason forbids it and ecstasy calls.
فَإِنَّfor indeed عِقَالَthe fetter of العَقْلِreason يَدْعُوcalls إِلىtoward السِّوَىthe other
وَوَصْلُand union with السِّوىthe other قَصْلٌseverance وَوِجْدَانُهُand finding it فَقْدُloss
For reason's fetter calls toward the other,
and union with the other is severance, and finding it is loss.
إِلىto الذِّكْرِremembrance فارْجِعْthen return وَاْتُركِand abandon الفِكُرَthought فيabout السِّوىthe other
إِذَاif كُنْتَyou are مِمَّنْamong those who قَصْدُهُhis aim العَلَمُthe beacon الفَرْدُthe peerless
Return, then, to remembrance, and abandon thought of the other,
if you are among those whose aim is the peerless beacon.
وَلاَand do not تكُbe غَيْرَاناًjealous إِذَاwhen ذُكِرَis mentioned أُسْمُهَاher name
فَذَاكِرُهاfor whoever mentions her حَادٍa singing camel-driver إِلىtoward حُبِّهَاlove of her يَحْدُوurges on with song
And do not be jealous when her name is mentioned,
for whoever mentions her is a camel-driver, urging toward love of her with song.
تَجَلَّىshone forth مُحَيَّاهَاher face لِغَيْرِto those other than بَنِيthe children of الهَوَىlove
فَصُدُّواso they were turned away كَذَاكَlikewise الشَّمْسُthe sun والأَعْينُand the eyes الرُّمْدُsore
Her face shone forth to those not of love's children,
and they were turned away—so it is with the sun and sore eyes.
ولاَand (beginning of split ولاحظها) حَظهَاbeheld her (completion of split ولاحظها) لَحْظُthe gaze of المُحِبِّthe lover فإِنْso if بَكَىhe wept
سِرُوراًfor joy فَرَائِيfor one who beholds الشَّمْسِthe sun أَدْمُعُهhis tears تَبْدُوappear
And the lover's gaze beheld her; if he wept
for joy—one who beholds the sun has tears that show.
فَدَعْso forgo ثَمَنَthe price of النَّفْسِthe soul النفيسةِthe precious عِنْدَهَاbefore her
فَلَيْسَfor there is no لَهَاfor her إِلاَّexcept بِلاَwithout ثَمَنٍa price عَبْدُa slave
So forgo a price for your precious soul before her,
for she has no slave except one without a price.
قَرِيبَةُnear to وَصْلٍunion لِلْمُحِبِّfor the lover وَإِنَّمَاand yet
إِذَاwhen وَصَلَتْshe unites لَمْnot يَبْقَremains قُرْبُnearness وَلاَnor بُعْدُdistance
She is close to union with the lover; yet
when she unites, neither nearness nor distance remains.
تَثَنَّتْshe swayed فَظَنُّواso they thought أَنَّهاthat she ثَنَوِيَّةٌa dualist
وَقَدْthough indeed يَتَثَنَّىsways قَدُّهاher figure وَهُوَwhile it is الفْردُthe One
She swayed, and they thought her a dualist,
though her figure may sway while it is the One.
وَقَدْand indeed نَطَقتْspoke حُسْناًin beauty مَنَاطقُthe girdles of خَصْرِهَاher waist
فَظَنُّواso they imagined حَمَاماًdoves فَوْقَabove بَانَتِهِtheir bān-tree يَشْدُوsings
And the girdles of her waist spoke in beauty,
so they imagined doves singing above their bān-tree.
وَقَالوُاand they said لهاshe has خَالٌa mole مِنَof النَّدِّnadd perfume فَاتِنٌbewitching
صَدَقْتُمْyou spoke truly لَهَاshe has خَالٌa mole بَلىindeed مَالَهَاshe has no نِدُّpeer
And they said, 'She has a bewitching mole of nadd perfume.'
You spoke truly: she has a mole; indeed, she has no peer.
فَإِنْso if كُنْتَyou are ذَاpossessing وَعْدٍa promise بوَصْلِof union with جَمَالِهَاher beauty
فَبَعْضُthen some of مُحِبيِّهَاher lovers لَدَيْكَin your eyes لَهُfor him عَدُّa reckoning
So if you have a promise of union with her beauty,
then one of her lovers counts in your eyes.
فَلاَso do not تَقُلِsay الدُّنْيَاthe world اسْتَمَالتْهُenticed him إِنَّمَاrather
تَجَلَّتْrevealed herself مِنَfrom الدُّنْيَاthe world لِمُقَلَتِهِto his eye هِنْدُHind
So do not say, 'The world enticed him'; rather,
Hind revealed herself to his eye from within the world.
يُذَادُis driven away عَنِfrom الوِرْدِthe watering-place العَذِيبِsweet سِوَىexcept امْرُءٍa man
غَرِيبٍa stranger لَهُhe has فِيat كُلِّevery مَنْهَلَةٍwatering-place وِرْدُa share of water
All are driven from the sweet watering-place, save a man—
a stranger, who has a share of water at every watering-place.
