لَوْif سَقَيْنَاwe watered الرُّبُوعَthe dwelling-places مَاءَwater الشَّبَابِyouth
مَاnot وَفَيْنَاwe repaid fully فَكَيْفَthen how مَاءُwater التَّصَابِيfeigned youth
If we watered the dwelling-places with the water of youth,
We would not repay them fully—how then with the water of feigned youth?
فَاسْقِنِيso give me to drink مِنْfrom مَنَازِلِthe abodes الحَيِّthe tribe وَجْداًin longing
يَاO رُبُوعَdwelling-places دُمُوعَtears السَّحَابِthe clouds
So, in longing, let me drink from the tribe's abodes,
O dwelling-places, the tears of clouds.
يَاO ثُغُورَmouths الأَقَاحِthe daisies كُونِيbecome رِضَاباًsweet saliva
إنَّindeed أَشْهَىmost delectable الأقَاحِthe daisies ذَاتُpossessing الرِّضَابِsweet saliva
O mouths of daisies, become sweet saliva;
Indeed, the most delectable daisies are those with sweet saliva.
وَبِكأَسِand in the cup الشَّقِيقِthe anemone كُونِيbecome شَرَاباًwine
أَنْتِyou فِيin حُمْرَةٍredness كَلَوْنِlike the color الشَّرابِwine
And in the anemone's cup, become wine;
Your redness is like the color of wine.
أَوْثَقَتْنَاbound us بِالنَّرْجِسِwith the narcissus الغَضِّtender مِنْهَاfrom them
أَعْيُنٌeyes لاَnot كَأَعْيُنِlike the eyes الأَحْبَابِthe beloveds
With the tender narcissus among them, we were bound
By eyes unlike the eyes of beloveds.
تِلْكَthose فِيهَاwithin them مِنْof فَتْرَةِlanguor الحُسْنِbeauty جَمْعٌa gathering
فَارِقٌa sunderer لِلجُسُومِof bodies والأَلْبَابِand minds
Within those eyes is a gathering of beauty's languor,
That sunders bodies and minds.
