إِذَاif كُنْتyou were بَعْدafter المَحْوِeffacement فيin الصَّحْوِsobriety سَيِّداًa master
إِمَاماًan imam مُثَنَّىtwofold النَّعْتِthe attribute بِالذَاتِin essence مُفْرَداsingle
If, after effacement, you are a master in sobriety,
An imam, twofold in attribute, single in essence,
فَمَاso ... not الرَّسْمُthe outward form إِلاَّexcept مَانِعٌa hindrance غَيْرُnot حَاجِزٍa barrier
حَصِينٌimpregnable بِهby it الإِطْلاَقُunboundedness لَنْwill not يَتَقَيَّداbecome constrained
Then outward form is only a hindrance, not a barrier
That is impregnable; the unbounded will never be bound by it.
وَذَاكَand that لأَنَّbecause الفَرْقَseparation صَارَbecame تَوَهُّماan illusion
بِهَيْئَتِهِin its form والجَمْعُand union فَرْداًsingle كَمَاas بَداappeared
And that is because separation has become an illusion
In its form, while union is one, as it appeared.
وَمِنْand from قَوْلِهِمْtheir saying مَاnot قَامَrose إِلاَّexcept مُحَمَّدٌMuhammad
دَلِيلٌa proof بهِby it حُكْمُthe judgment الصَوَابِcorrectness تأَيَّداwas confirmed
And from their saying, 'No one rose except Muhammad,'
Comes proof by which the correct judgment was confirmed.
رَفَعْنَاwe raised عنfrom الإِعْرَابِgrammatical parsing رَفْعَthe nominative marking of مُحَمِّدٍMuhammad (vocalized Muhammid)
لِقَامَto 'rose' وإِلاَّand 'except' عَنْهُfrom it تَنْفِيexcludes مُحَمَّدَMuhammad
From grammatical parsing, we traced Muhammad's nominative
To 'rose'; while 'except' exempts Muhammad from its negation.
وَإِذْand since لَمْnot يَكُنْwas مَاnot قَامَrose يَطْلُبُseeks فَاعِلاa subject
سِوَاهُother than him رَفَعْنَاهُwe made him nominative بِهِthrough it فَتَأَكَّداso it was confirmed
And since 'did not rise' sought no subject
Other than him, we made him nominative through it, and this was confirmed.
فإِلاَّso 'except' وَإِنْalthough دَلَّتْindicated عَلىtoward الفَرْقِseparation ظَاهِراًoutwardly
فَتَحْقِيقُso establishing حُكْمِthe rule of الرَّفْعِnominative marking يَجْعَلَهَاmakes it سُدَىineffectual
So although 'except' outwardly signifies separation,
Establishing the nominative rule renders it ineffectual.
فَلاَso do not تُطِعِheed الإِيجَابَaffirmation إِلاَّexcept تَقِيَّةَa precaution
بِهَاby means of it واعْتَمِدْand rely فيin سَلْبِnegating إِيجَابِهَاits affirmation الهُدَىguidance
So do not heed affirmation except as a precaution,
By means of it; and rely on guidance in negating its affirmation.
كَذَلِكَlikewise والسَّلْبُand the negation الَّذِيwhich اْبتَدَأَتْbegan بِهِwith it
شَهَادَتُنَاour testimony مَاnot كَانَexisted شَيءٌa thing فَيُجْحَداso it might be denied
Likewise, the negation with which began
Our testimony: there was nothing to be denied.
فَتَحْقِيقُso realizing ذاكَthat النَّفْيِّnegation إِثْبَاتُaffirmation of وَاحِدٍOne
وَمَنْand whoever وجذfound (apparent typo) الإِثْبَاتَaffirmation فِيin نَفْيِهِhis negation اهْتَدَىfound guidance
Thus realizing that negation is affirming the One,
And whoever finds affirmation in his negation has found guidance.
