صَبَاyearned لِرُّبَىfor the hills of الأَرَاكِthe arak trees وَحَيِّand the encampment of هِنْدِHind
طَرِيحُlaid low صَبَابَةٍpassion وَحَليِفُand a companion of وَجْدِlonging
He yearned for the arak-clad hills and Hind’s encampment—
He yearned for the hills of arak trees and Hind's encampment,
a man laid low by passion, the sworn companion of rapture.
Laid low by passion, a companion of longing.
وَهَاجَتْهُand stirred him البُروُقُthe lightning flashes فَحَنَّso he pined شَوَقْاًwith longing
إِلىto رَشْفِsipping الَّلمَىthe dusky hue of lips مِنْfrom ثَغْرِthe mouth of هِنْدِHind
The lightning flashes stirred him, and he cried out in longing
And lightning flashes stirred him, so he pined with longing
to sip the dusky sweetness from Hind’s mouth.
To sip the dusky hue from Hind's lips.
سَكِرْتُI became drunk وَمِنْand from شَمَائِلِهَاher graces شَمُولِيmy wine
وَمِنْand from وَجَنَاتِهَاher cheeks آسِيmy myrtle وَوَرْدِيand my roses
I grew drunk, and from her graces came my wine;
I grew drunk, and my wine comes from her graces;
from her cheeks came my myrtle and my rose.
And from her cheeks come my myrtle and my roses.
مُحَجَّبَةٌveiled وَلَكِنْand yet فيin ضَمِيرِيmy heart
بِمَوْطِنِin the abode of صَبْوَتيmy yearning وَمَحَلِّand the dwelling of وُدِّيmy love
She is veiled, yet she dwells within my heart,
She is veiled, yet within my heart,
in the homeland of my yearning, the abode of my love.
In the abode of my yearning and the dwelling of my love.
وَأَشْهَدَنِيand made me behold تَذَكْرُهَاremembering her جَمَالاًa beauty
أُنَزِّهُI hold above وَصْفَهُits description عَنْbeyond كُلِّevery حَدِّlimit
Remembering her revealed to me a beauty
And remembering her made me behold a beauty
whose description I exalt beyond every bound.
Whose description I hold beyond every limit.
إِذَاwhen أَبْدَىreveals التَّبَسُّمُthe smile نَظْمُthe stringing of عِقْدٍa necklace
أُعَانِقُهُI embrace it فَأَنْثُرُthen I scatter كُلَّall of عِقْدِيmy necklace
Whenever her smile reveals a necklace’s pearly strand,
When a smile reveals a strung necklace,
I embrace it, and every knot within me comes undone.
I embrace it, then scatter my whole necklace.
وَبِتُّand I spent the night فَلاَso do not تَسَلْask عَنْabout عَيْشِthe life of صَبٍّa lovesick lover
حَظَىwas favored بِالوَصْلِwith union بَعْدَafter جَفاًestrangement وَصَدِّand rejection
I passed the night—ask not what life is like for a lover
And I spent the night—so ask not of a lovesick lover's life,
who won union after estrangement and rebuff.
Who was favored with union after estrangement and rejection.
