Or else a heart whose core patience governs.
هَوَتْplunged قَدَميmy foot فِيinto الحُبِّlove عَنْfrom غَيْرِa lack of خِبْرَةٍexperience
فَأَلْفَيْتَهُso I found it حُلْوَsweet التَّجَرُّعِswallowing عَذْبَهُits sweetness
My foot plunged into love without experience,
And I found it sweet to swallow, delightful in savor.
هُوَit الشَّهْدُhoney مَمْزُوجاًmingled بِسُمِّwith poison وَعَلْقَمٍand bitter colocynth
أُؤَمَّلُI hope for عَتْبَاهُits restored favor وَأَحْذَرُand I fear عَتْبَهُits reproach
It is honey mingled with poison and bitter colocynth;
I hope for its restored favor and fear its reproach.
هَوَيْتُI loved حَبِيباًa beloved لَسْتُI am not أَهْلاًworthy لِحُبِّهِof loving him
وَأَنَّيand how لِمِثْلِيfor one like me أَنْto يَكُونَbe مُحِبَّهُhis lover
I loved a beloved I am unworthy to love,
And how could one like me be his lover?
هَلاَلُthe crescent فُؤَادِيof my heart كُلَّمَاwhenever ذُقتُI tasted غَفْوَةًa brief slumber

وَصُبْحُand the dawn عَيَانِيof my vision كُلَّمَاwhenever أَتَنَبَّهُI awaken
He is my heart's crescent whenever I taste slumber,
And the dawn of my vision whenever I awaken.

I sought understanding, but fell short out of awe;
And my inability to understand is more fitting and more apt.

A heart fluttered for you—you kindled its fire-stick;
And a gaze reached you—you let its rain clouds loose.
