وَمَا عَلَيْكِ إِذَا مَا
وَقَّدْتِyou kindled نِيْرَانَthe fires of قَلْبيmy heart
وَقَّدْتِ نِيْرَانَ قَلْبي

إنْif تَكْتُمِيyou conceal سِرَّthe secret of لَيْلَىLayla

فطِيبُهَا عَنْهَا يُبْنِي
Even if you conceal Layla's secret,

her fragrance makes her known.

أَوْor لاَnot فَمَاthen what لَشَذَاهَاis with her fragrance
أَوْ لاَ فَمَا لَشَذَاهَا
يُسْبِيcaptivates العُقُولَthe minds وَيُصْبِيand arouses longing
يُسْبِي العُقُولَ وَيُصْبِي
Otherwise, why should her perfume

take minds captive and draw them into passion?

أهْدَتْshe offered إِليَّto me حَدِيثاًa message
أهْدَتْ إِليَّ حَدِيثاً
فَهِمْتَهُyou understood it دُونَapart from صَحْبِيmy companions
فَهِمْتَهُ دُونَ صَحْبِي
She sent me a message
She offered me a message;
that I understood, unlike my companions.

فَحَلَّso became lawful فِيin الحَالِthe present moment سَلْبِيmy being despoiled
فَحَلَّ فِي الحَالِ سَلْبِي
دُونَto the exclusion of الجَمِيعِeveryone وَنَهْبِيand my being plundered
دُونَ الجَمِيعِ وَنَهْبِي
At once I was dispossessed,
So at once it became lawful to despoil me,
and I alone among them all was plundered.

يَا طَالِباً حَيَّ لَيْلَى ذ

ذَاتِي حِمَاهَا فَطُفْ بِي
O seeker of Layla's quarter—[ذ]
O seeker of Layla’s encampment [isolated dhāl],
my very being is her sanctuary; circumambulate me.

وَنَادِand call out بَاسْمِيby my name تَجِدْهَاyou will find her
وَنَادِ بَاسْمِي تَجِدْهَا
عَلَىupon لِسَانِيmy tongue تُلَبِيِّshe answers the call
عَلَى لِسَانِي تُلَبِيِّ
Call out my name, and you will find her
