عُيونَeyes الحَيَاthe rain جُوْدِيbe generous لِتُرْبَةِto the soil of يَثْربِYathrib
عُيونَ الحَيَا جُوْدِي لِتُرْبَةِ يَثْربِ
بدَمْعٍwith tears هَتُونٍstreaming وَدْقَهُits rain مُتَصَوِّبِpouring down
بدَمْعٍ هَتُونٍ وَدْقَهُ مُتَصَوِّبِ
O eyes of rain, be generous to Yathrib's soil,
with streaming tears whose raindrops pour down.
وَعُودِيand return بِطِيبٍwith fragrance مِنْfrom سَلاَمِيَmy greeting طِيبُهُits fragrance
وَعُودِي بِطِيبٍ مِنْ سَلاَمِيَ طِيبُهُ
نَسِيمُthe breeze of الصِّبَاthe east wind النَّجْدِيِّof Najd يَاO خَيْرَbest of طَيِّبِa good, pure one
نَسِيمُ الصِّبَا النَّجْدِيِّ يَا خَيْرَ طَيِّبِ
And return with fragrance from my greeting, whose perfume is
the Najdi east breeze, O best of the good!
بِلاَدٌa land بِهَاin it لِلْوَحْيِfor revelation مَرْبَاًa nurturing place وَمَرْبَعٌand an abode
بِلاَدٌ بِهَا لِلْوَحْيِ مَرْبَاً وَمَرْبَعٌ
وَمَنْتَجَعُand a haven of الغُفْرَانِforgiveness عَنْfor كُلِّevery مُذْنِبِsinner
وَمَنْتَجَعُ الغُفْرَانِ عَنْ كُلِّ مُذْنِبِ
A land where revelation has a nurturing ground and an abode,
and a haven of forgiveness for every sinner;
وَحَيْثُand where الكَمِالُperfection الطَّلْقُunfettered والمَرْكَزand the center الذَّيwhich
وَحَيْثُ الكَمِالُ الطَّلْقُ والمَرْكَز الذَّي
إِليْهِtoward it انْتَهَىreached its end دَوْرُthe revolution of المُحيِطِthe encompassing sphere المُكَوْكَبِstar-studded
إِليْهِ انْتَهَى دَوْرُ المُحيِطِ المُكَوْكَبِ
and where unfettered perfection dwells, and the center to which
the revolution of the star-studded sphere reaches its end.
أَفَاضَتُهُpoured him forth أَنْوِارُthe lights of الغُيُوبِthe unseen realms عَلىupon الوَرَىcreation
أَفَاضَتُهُ أَنْوِارُ الغُيُوبِ عَلى الوَرَى
إفَاضَةَan outpouring وَهْبٍbestowal خَارِجٍَoutside عنْof تَكَسُّبِearning through effort
إفَاضَةَ وَهْبٍ خَارِجٍَ عنْ تَكَسُّبِ
The lights of the unseen poured him forth upon creation,
in an outpouring of bounty beyond all earning.
فَأَخْبَرَso he told عَمَاabout what غَابَwas hidden بِالشَّاهِدِthrough manifest evidence الذَّيwhich
فَأَخْبَرَ عَمَا غَابَ بِالشَّاهِدِ الذَّي
يُبَرْهِنُproves بِالإِعْجَازِthrough miraculous inimitability فِيin كُلِّevery مَطْلَبِinquiry
يُبَرْهِنُ بِالإِعْجَازِ فِي كُلِّ مَطْلَبِ
So he told of what was hidden through the manifest evidence that
proves through miraculous inimitability in every inquiry.
إذَاwhen نَظَرَتْlooked عَيْناthe two eyes of بَصِيرَتِهِhis insight إلىَtoward
إذَا نَظَرَتْ عَيْنا بَصِيرَتِهِ إلىَ
حَقِيَقتِهِhis reality المُثْلَىthe ideal فأَحْسِنْthen how beautiful وَأَطْيِبِand how good
حَقِيَقتِهِ المُثْلَى فأَحْسِنْ وَأَطْيِبِ
When the two eyes of his insight look toward
his ideal reality—how beautiful and how good!
يَرَىhe sees بَرْزَخَthe barrier between البَحْرَينِthe two seas كَوْناًa being مُكَوَّناًcreated
يَرَى بَرْزَخَ البَحْرَينِ كَوْناً مُكَوَّناً
وَمَطْلَعَهُand its rising-place فِيwithin حَدِّهِits boundary المُتَرَتِّبِordered
وَمَطْلَعَهُ فِي حَدِّهِ المُتَرَتِّبِ
He sees the barrier between the two seas as a created being,
and its rising-place within its ordered boundary.
فَيَأْخُذُso he takes مِنْfrom هَذَاthis لِهَذَاfor this بِحَقِّهِaccording to its due
فَيَأْخُذُ مِنْ هَذَا لِهَذَا بِحَقِّهِ
عَلَىaccording to نِسْبَةٍa relationship مَحْفُوظَةِpreserved الأُمِّthe mother وَالأَبِand the father
عَلَى نِسْبَةٍ مَحْفُوظَةِ الأُمِّ وَالأَبِ
So he takes from this for that, according to its due,
in a relationship whose mother and father are preserved.
عَلَىby يَدِّthe hand of مَعْنَاهُits meaning يَمُرُّpasses وُجُوبُهُits necessity
عَلَى يَدِّ مَعْنَاهُ يَمُرُّ وُجُوبُهُ
لإِمْكَانِهِto its contingency مَرَّthe passing of السَّحَابِthe clouds المُصَوِّبِrain-shedding
لإِمْكَانِهِ مَرَّ السَّحَابِ المُصَوِّبِ
By the hand of its meaning, its necessity passes
to its contingency, like the passage of rain-shedding clouds.
فَيَقْبَلُso receives مِنْهُfrom it قَابِلٌa recipient حُكْمُthe ruling of فَاعِلٍan agent
فَيَقْبَلُ مِنْهُ قَابِلٌ حُكْمُ فَاعِلٍ
بِمَضْمُونِthrough the substance of مِيَراثِthe inheritance of الكَمَالِperfection المُهَذَّبِrefined
بِمَضْمُونِ مِيَراثِ الكَمَالِ المُهَذَّبِ
So a recipient receives from it an agent's ruling,
through the substance of the inheritance of refined perfection.
وَلَمْand did not يَكُbe فِيin هذَاthis التَّوُسُطِmediation مُثْبِتاًasserting
وَلَمْ يَكُ فِي هذَا التَّوُسُطِ مُثْبِتاً
عَلَىover النَّاسِthe people حَقّاًa right أَوْor تَمَيُّزَdistinction of مَنْصِبِrank
عَلَى النَّاسِ حَقّاً أَوْ تَمَيُّزَ مَنْصِبِ
And in this mediation he asserted no
right over people, nor distinction of rank.
وُمَاand not ذَاكَthat أَنْthat لَيْسَthere is no حَوْلٌmight وَقُوَّةٌand power
وُمَا ذَاكَ أَنْ لَيْسَ حَوْلٌ وَقُوَّةٌ
بِغَيْرِapart from الجَوَادِthe Generous One المُطْلَقِunrestricted in الجُودِbounty فَاعْجَبِso marvel
بِغَيْرِ الجَوَادِ المُطْلَقِ الجُودِ فَاعْجَبِ
And that is not because there is no might or power
apart from the Generous One, boundless in bounty—so marvel!
وَلَكِنْand yet يَرَىhe sees إِلاَّonly أَنَّthat نُكْتَهَthe subtle point of قَلْبِهِhis heart
وَلَكِنْ يَرَى إِلاَّ أَنَّ نُكْتَهَ قَلْبِهِ
أُزِيلَwas removed بِهَاthrough it دَاعِيthe impulse of الهَوَىpassion وَالتَّحَوُّبِand scruples about sin
أُزِيلَ بِهَا دَاعِي الهَوَى وَالتَّحَوُّبِ
But he sees only that his heart's subtle point
has dispelled the promptings of passion and scruples about sin.
فَهَذَاso this لَهُfor him مَعْنَىthe meaning of المَقَامِthe station مُغَيَّبٌveiled
فَهَذَا لَهُ مَعْنَى المَقَامِ مُغَيَّبٌ
وَلَمْand did not يَكُbe عَنْهَاaway from it أَهْلُهُits adepts بِمُغَيَّبِat all absent
وَلَمْ يَكُ عَنْهَا أَهْلُهُ بِمُغَيَّبِ
So, for this one, the meaning of the station is veiled,
yet its adepts were not absent from it.
إِذَاwhen صُفَّتِwere arrayed الأَقْدَامُthe feet مِنَّاof us وَأَمَّنَاand led us in prayer
إِذَا صُفَّتِ الأَقْدَامُ مِنَّا وَأَمَّنَا
صَلاَةَa prayer of شُهُودٍwitnessing لاَnot صَلاَةَa prayer of تَحَجُّبِveiling
صَلاَةَ شُهُودٍ لاَ صَلاَةَ تَحَجُّبِ
When our feet were set in ranks and he led us
in a prayer of witnessing, not a prayer of veiling,
مَضَىhe went on لَمْdid not يُعَقِّبْturn back دَانِياًdrawing near مِنْto شُهُودِهِhis witnessing
مَضَى لَمْ يُعَقِّبْ دَانِياً مِنْ شُهُودِهِ
بِنَاwith us وَمَضَيْنَاand we went on خَلْفَهُbehind him لَمْdid not نُعَقِّبِturn back
بِنَا وَمَضَيْنَا خَلْفَهُ لَمْ نُعَقِّبِ
he went on without turning back, close to his witnessing
with us; and we went behind him without turning back.
أُولئكَthose وُرَّاثُheirs of النَّبِيِّthe Prophet شَهَادَةًin the seen realm
أُولئكَ وُرَّاثُ النَّبِيِّ شَهَادَةً
وَغَيْباًand in the unseen وَلَيْسَand is not البَّرُthe righteous person مِثْلَlike المُقَرَّبِthe one brought near
وَغَيْباً وَلَيْسَ البَّرُ مِثْلَ المُقَرَّبِ
Those are the Prophet's heirs in the seen realm
and in the unseen; the righteous person is not like the one brought near.
وَتِلْكَand that سَبِيلٌa path قَدْindeed دَعَاhe called بِبَصِيرَةٍwith insight
وَتِلْكَ سَبِيلٌ قَدْ دَعَا بِبَصِيرَةٍ
لَهَاto it ودَعَوْنَاand we called كُلَّevery شَرْقٍeast وَمَغْرِبِand west
لَهَا ودَعَوْنَا كُلَّ شَرْقٍ وَمَغْرِبِ
And that is a path to which he indeed called with insight;
and we called every east and west to it.
فَذَلِكَso that دَاعِيa caller to اللهِGod بِالمَنْهَجِby the method الَّذيwhich
فَذَلِكَ دَاعِي اللهِ بِالمَنْهَجِ الَّذي
بِهِthrough it صُورَةُthe form of التَّكْمِيلِperfecting فِيin كُلِّevery مَذْهَبِschool
بِهِ صُورَةُ التَّكْمِيلِ فِي كُلِّ مَذْهَبِ
So that is the caller to God, by the method whereby
the form of perfecting is found in every school.
شَرِيعَةُa sacred law of حَقٍّtruth حَقُّthe truth of كُلِّevery شَرِيعَةٍsacred law
شَرِيعَةُ حَقٍّ حَقُّ كُلِّ شَرِيعَةٍ
مَقامُa station of خُصُوصٍparticularity عَنْapart from عُمُومٍgenerality مُرَتَّبِordered
مَقامُ خُصُوصٍ عَنْ عُمُومٍ مُرَتَّبِ
A sacred law of truth, the truth of every sacred law,
a station of particularity, apart from ordered generality,
مُشَاراًindicated إليْهِtoward it صُورَةًin form مِنْfrom جِهَاتِهَاits directions
مُشَاراً إليْهِ صُورَةً مِنْ جِهَاتِهَا
جَميعاًall together وَمَعْنىًand in meaning مِنْfrom حَقَائِقِthe realities of غُيَّبِthe unseen ones
جَميعاً وَمَعْنىً مِنْ حَقَائِقِ غُيَّبِ
pointed to in form from its directions,
all together, and in meaning from the realities of the unseen.
