أَفِيDo you, in وَلَهِيmy rapture بِاسْمِat the name of المَلِيحَةِthe fair one تَعْتِبُreproach?
وَتُعْرِضُAnd turn away إِنْif وَحَّدْتُهَاI declared her one ثُمَّthen تَغْضَبُyou grow angry
Do you reproach me for my rapture at the fair one's name?
And turn away if I declare her one, then grow angry?
وَلَوْAnd if فُزْتَyou gained مِنْfrom ذَاكَthat الجَمْالِbeauty بِنَظْرَةٍa glance
لأَصْبَحَThen it would become مِنْكَfrom you العَقْلُreason يُسْبىَtaken captive وَيُسْلَبُand stolen away
If you were granted a single glimpse of that beauty,
Your reason would be captured and stolen from you.
وَهَبْتُكَI gave you سُلْوَانيmy solace وَصَبْريand my patience كِلاَهُماboth of them
وَأَمَّاBut as for غَرَامِيmy ardent love فَهْوَit is مَاwhat لَيْسَis not يُوهَبُgiven away
I have given you both my solace and my patience;
But my ardent love is something I cannot give away.
وَقَيَّدْتُAnd I bound أَشْوَاقِيmy longings بإطْلاقِby releasing صَبْوةٍa passion
إليْهَاTo her صَبَابَاتُthe ardors المُحِبينَof lovers تُنْسَبُare attributed
I bound my longings by setting loose a passion
To which the ardors of lovers are attributed.
فَهَاSo here أَنَاI am والسَّاقيand the cupbearer يُنَاوِلُoffers كأسَهَاher cup
فَأَشْرَبُSo I drink صِرْفاًundiluted أَوْor يُغَنيِّhe sings فَأَطْرَبُand I am enraptured
Here I am, while the cupbearer offers her cup:
I drink it undiluted, or he sings and I am enraptured.
فَإنْSo if لاَمَhe blames فِيهَاconcerning her الشَّيْخُthe shaykh طِفْلَthe child غَرَامِهَاof her love
عَلَىFor سُكْرِهِhis drunkenness فالشَّيْخُthen the shaykh كالطِّفْلِlike the child يَلْعَبُplays
If the shaykh blames the child of her love
For his drunkenness, the shaykh himself plays like a child.
تُذَكِّرُنِيShe reminds me of الحَلاَّجَal-Hallaj وَالكَأْسُand the cup تُجْتَلَىis displayed
وَلَكِنَّهَاBut she عَنْهُfrom him تُصَانُis guarded وَتُحْجَبُand veiled
She reminds me of al-Hallaj as the cup is displayed,
Yet she is guarded and veiled from him.
وَلَوْAnd if لَمْthey had not يَرَوْاseen رَاووُقَهَاher wine strainer كَصَلِيِبهِlike his cross
لَمَاThey would not have عَذَروُاexcused حلاَّجَهَاher Hallaj حِينَwhen يُصْلَبُhe is crucified
Had they not seen her wine strainer like his cross,
They would not have excused her Hallaj when he is crucified.
